What if you could help feed people and stop the Asian Carp invasion at the same time? UC Davis Aquaculture takes a trip to Peoria Illinois to fish with Commercial Fishermen from The Midwest Fish Coop.
The Asian carp are an aquatic invasive species of fish in the United States. They are on the brink of taking over the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Valley because of their population explosion. It is perhaps one of the worst invasive fish in North America. The carp are a feeding machine that can consume up to 40% of their body weight in plant plankton, and they're eating all the food out of those areas. So how do we make the most of a bad situation that started out as a solution for a problem in aquaculture fish farming? We go Asian carp fishing for bighead carp, silver carp, grass carp, and common carp. One of the reasons I went to Illinois was to increase the fish animal welfare during the harvest process. The goal is to increase animal welfare while simultaneously increasing fish quality and prolong shelf life for eating carp, one of the most farmed fish in global aquaculture. Watch how professional fishermen are filleting and eating the most hated fish in America.

Government both state and federal need to invest in infrastructure, not more research. Over two decades, billions of dollars have been spent on federal and state studies and still these fish thrive. The only way to control this invasion is to use commercial fishers to harvest them and processors to manufacture products. Right now, there is little to no support from government for this essential industry.

But guess what, these fishes are prolific growers and provides massive amount of protein without mercury, and 40% lower carbon footprint (Carp=1.6, Salmon=2.9). America should be glad to have this new resource and learn to live with it and utilize it like people from the rest of the world. Afterall, we are all invasive species to North America.

@@ThisIsAquaculture Emphasis on gender, right? Why not cater to this part of the world and most the world, where the word fisherman is ancient and let the rest of them do their thing? Calling a fisherman a fisher is joke and strikes me as a feminist reaction to the word man.
@ThisIsAquaculture
@ThisIsAquaculture 2 жыл бұрын
If have you disagree with you on that one. I work all over the place. I see little difference. I know many “manly” men who call them fishers. I know fishermen and fisherwoman but all all fishers nonetheless. Not sure how you equate it as a feminist agenda. You’re not wrong to call them fishermen nor are you wrong to call them fishers. Actor and actress are both actors. Fish farmers are not farm men and farm women? It is somewhat arbitrary what gets the distinction.

@@ThisIsAquaculture I've fished and been a fisherman for many, many years and I have never in my life heard anybody say fisher or even read the word fisher. I have heard it used a few times in recent years. This time being one of about three times. Oh well. The word just goes clunk when I see it, like someone pretending to know anything about fishing in a movie or TV show.

I hear ya. I’m from the Midwest and get it. But Ive spent a lot of time with fishers in the Caribbean and Central America and in English they call themselves fishers. I actually think nothing of it and use it interchangeably.

@@ThisIsAquaculture I cannot understand why you struggle to make boneless fillet of this fish, when you just clean them, remove guts, cut in half alongside the spine, after cut in stakes, salt, pepper, maybe garlic, corn or wheat flour to cover the fish, and just fry, you remove the bones after cooked, it works best on fish ~8lb and above, bigger bones easier to remove, from heads and tails you can make very good fish stock. Common carp works to, and it's better baked in foil, hello from Eastern Europe, we eat this fish for a long time.
@ThisIsAquaculture
@ThisIsAquaculture 2 жыл бұрын
The bones don’t allow for that cut in bighead and silver carp. You can get boneless fillets but just not the big fillet people are used to in the US such as salmon and trout. Also requires more labor versus automation.

These carp cannot thrive in the Great Lakes.
@ThisIsAquaculture
@ThisIsAquaculture 2 жыл бұрын
Of course they can thrive in the Great lakes. They live in lakes in Asia. They will of course use the lakes to access tributaries to spawn and expand. further into the continent. While other invasives have impacted to food cycle I would gamble, and Im not a gambler, that they will definitely survive and thrive.

They brought these over to make money for fisherman's that's why they be saying don't let your minnows go in to lake but until they eat it so it's a hot business now

My understanding is that the bighead and silver carp were brought over to clean up algae in ponds. Not to make money but yes it is one of the reasons why they don’t want you to release minnows.

One advice to America suffering the problem. Fillet is like Indian style (vertically) make a Indian style curry . And eat it with rice . Pick up the bones while eating it adds adventure. You can learn about it in any Indian recipe

Bad advice. If one is not used to pick bones with hands then bones can get stuck in throat which can attract medical fees. Its no adventure to pick bones its annoying and one has to use hands to eat which westerners are not used to. Its better to find a way to take out bones first with some machinary stuff.
