I would have an issue with calling this "revealing things about kpop that the west should know" for outsiders. Because we all know that BH/HYBE didn't do things in the "kpop" way. In fact, Hitman Bang said one of the reasons he started Big Hit was because he didn't like the NORMAL way kpop agencies behaved with their artists and music. So to label HYBE's series as a lens into KPOP I think is a bit disingenuous. Especially when this year we have had artist abuse allegations from a few agencies, wage disputes and more. I don't think we can claim this as having anything to do with other KPOP agencies until they PROVE it. As an example, your first point about music exposure and genre shifting. That was one of the MAJOR things people in the West praised BTS for. Because kpop had an image of one thing but BTS showed many sides and flavors to their music. So to say that is inherent in kpop I would highly disagree. There is a reason many can pick out an SM group just by hearing them because SM caters to a specific sound and genre mostly.

Agreed. I think the docu-series shows the BH/HYBE way of doing things with trainees. Based on other things I’ve seen & read about the Big 3 systems previously, their systems are the opposite, trainees aren’t treated very well. The systems are harsh which Bang Shi-Hyuk did not want to set up. BH/HYBE wants to raise grow good people as well as artists.

I actually watched them all yesterday so seeing your video today was the cherry on top. The fact that RM was pulled into the video I think the development team is modeled after what they did for BTS. Bang has said in many interviews they were cracking the code for how to make music & musicians - it would seem they've figured it out. It starts with the training, nurturing, and development of the artists.

BTS was certainly a serendipity - the stars definitely aligned to bring the talent, the love and the drive together for the universe to experience and enjoy. I've often wondered how it was that PD Bang just knew that these seven, different human beings would just "click". What did he see in each boy that convinced him to give this guy his chance to debut. I do think you're right when you say that BTS is probably the reason Hybe (and now others) are focusing on the basic needs of trainees. Of expanding that part of training to more fully prepare and cultivate a trainee's talents. I'm really interested in this documentary and am pleased to see Hybe put this together.

If it wasn't for the guys fighting for J-Hope and Jimin to stay, and Bang PD listening to what they had to say, they probably wouldn't have stayed. sometimes it's just, when you put the right people together, it just clicks. It was definitely meant to be. I do attribute a lot of it to Bang PD.

In school I started French 2 years after my peer group. I was distraught at being less able than my friends, but I worked way harder than they did and over a 5 year period ( by the time of public exams) I surpassed all of them . Natural talent without hard work is rarely enough. I am profoundly glad that each group has talented and supportive people behind them. I’m especially pleased they have psychologists and annual mental health checks.

It was hard to watch the 1st episode of the BTS Monuments with them being pushed in practice dancing until they have it right. It would prove their image of perfection. I know it’s part of their success and that made me more love and so proud of them.

Thanks as always for your video and sharing your thoughts. I watched the series and recommend everyone watch it. Very good. I think they may have learned a lot from BTS and used it to help with future training. Having a psychologist on staff is a must. Glad they have one. They may have realized the need from the BTS members. This industry can cause a lot of mental issues in the trainees if mentoring is not careful and deliberate. I also wanted to emphasize your statement of having a love for the music. That love for the music will help you be happy with the sacrifices you need to make to succeed in the industry. As you stated, there are lots of talented people, there are lots of beautiful people, and there are lots of people with stage chemistry. However, if you don’t love what you do, you may not make the choice to practice more, expand musically, foregoing a date and more to pursue excellence. I am also glad they encourage writing music. Even if you never write a song with the intent to publicize it, the experience of writing will help you grow. The experience of producing will help you grow in your craft. Final thought, in many careers in the West, we expect a person to have training and education before pursuing the career. We also expect you to continue your education while working in that career. To expect artist to just jump out and perform without training is silly to me. To insist that it must be organic and organic and training doesn’t go hand in hand is silly to me. I want an artist to know how to move around the stage, interact with the fans, learn how to coordinate with their group members and more. Thanks again for your video.

Especially want an artist to do that without hurting themselves. Whitney Houston had such a beautiful voice! But she kind of ruined it which lead to her depression and eventual death. The wish for fame will not protect you when hardships come and you are "critizied". Love for music can help. 💜

Thing is they 'Kpop Industry' in General does not allow for development in the same way BigHit/HBYE. The general Kpop industry makes all the decisions the performers just do as they've told. They don't get to say I want to expand grow try this or that?

@@eileencritchley4630 partly but not always. Stray Kids where maybe modeled after BTS - they do their own stuff - but that is their decisions of how in a lot of ways. Seventeen did it before Pledis became a HYBE label. Try watching bby gang mag's video essays: - BTS vs. K-pop (has a definition of what K-pop is and a bit of history) - You are wrong about K-pop (because "The Dark Side of K-pop"TM narrative is BS) It's very interesting.

This Training and Development system is based on the Motown model which gave us groups like The Supremes, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and many others.

Please share more. I know that several Motown artists seem to have been discovered through/ by way of his or her involvement in church choirs and solo performances often starting as children. That type of experience built confidence with public performance and had a built-in mentoring, support, and spiritual component.

Maybe. They had the same idea. But Japan did something simlar at pretty much the same time. "Japanese idol" (name of the wikipedia article) also begins at the beginning of the 60s. "Motown" is founded about 1 year or two earlier. That is too close to have a big influence on each other - especially since that was a far less well connected world. But you can argue for both having an influence on Idol music.

I enjoyed the series as I had wondered often about the training side. I find it interesting that some in the West find this system not organic since in the US there are many performing arts high schools. There are dance companies that work with children and that have auditions for parts. Didn't Disney launch a bunch of now high-profile artists through their child-programing? (Timberlake, Spears, Aguilera, etc.). They must have had an audition system and then training to find the "right" ones with the "it" factor. I know that these systems have flaws/abuse and laws have been enacted to provide more protections regarding workload, guardians, and finances. It's still a system, isn't it?

I learn so much through your vids. Whether it's BigHit / Hybe, or the k-pop industry in general, I appreciate the learning culture that is encouraged. While natural talent is very important, it should be coupled with training and development. The UK also values training and development of its artists, especially actors, and one can see the results in how they are able to successfully break into the North American market. Plus, the discipline that training and development encourage is likely to result in a more successful artist / entertainer, I suspect

@LPnerd well, for groups maybe, but at Motown individuals like Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye wrote their own songs and music to express their feelings and social issues of the time. Also, people like Elton John, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones and the Beatles started to write some of their own songs and music as well. The Kpop industry did enhance the system to create its very own unique style, sounds and personal expressions and made it their own genre. It’s like the next evolution of progress! That’s why as ARMY I’m so very proud of BTS and Big Hit for developing a whole new musical world and expanding their artistic expressions in a way to create an original path for others to emulate and follow!

I disagree with one point. Some people CAN learn hard work. Not everyone, but some. Others will never learn it. Of course with familiarity with a type of work comes efficiency(good) and at times complacency(bad). Complacency and laziness are not good traits.

It was a lot of hit&miss. The label nearly had to throw them out of the drom which they refused and somehow it worked. But the series is of the system and how it works now thanks to what BTS (and later reflecting that experience on TXT) showed them. So, yeah... this is about how HYBE does it with the trainees the labels choose.

Why HIBE released these videos now. Such valuable information has been needed for a long time. I think the training system was formed together with BTS. The trainers had their own valuable methods, but they were united into a common system thanks to BTS. In addition to the RM playlist, there were definitely other works of the guys themselves. I’m sure SUGA helped with psychology, with the problems of artist burnout.
