I am a 51yo man and I have just been through what has been the toughest time in my entire life, and to a certain extent, it's still not over. I remember the feeling of hopelessness and the people around you having no clue what is happening to you. I am glad that I sought professional help after one of my colleagues spotted the signs (he's a doctor) and referred me by force to see a psychiatrist. It was the best decision I ever made even though I closed myself off to him during my therapy. It helped me see that I wasn't alone and that I wasn't completely without solutions to break the cycle I had myself in. Please seek help no matter what because the actions you may take while under the influence of depression could be worse for you and even more for your family should you take a certain path.

I too, saw myself climbing the railing and leaping off from the 4th floor. But thank god He moved my heart to think about my parents........ It still allowed me to think how I felt like this would break them the way I died. The emotions part is very true... for most of us, we always have to hide the 'negative' feelings like sadness, anger, frustration... so we end up keeping to ourselves, or try to escape through things that leads us to addiction.... we need to learn to validate feelings, and it's hard because it's unusual to us... but imagine fake smiles, fake happiness... so sad. And yesss to people saying go exercise, etc etc. Look, we sometimes don't need to be fixed. We just need to be heard and understood Therapy has helped me a lot... I am thankful to God that I overcame embarrassment or people calling me 'crazy' and just sought out for help.... just go for it... therapy is nothing like what you see in the movies or what people say...

This could just be me but hearing the father, I'm not so sure that he totally understands what his daughter is going thru. But certainly there is no doubt about the love he has for her and the pain he feels inside. I just feel the words he used.....doesn't convey to me a clear understanding of mental health and the struggles Lisa was and is going through. Maybe it's just the choice of words. Just a feeling in my gut after hearing him. But what's important is that they both now understand each other a bit better, can express their affections for each other a bit more, and are working together to manage Lisa's mental health struggles. I myself was diagnosed with a couple of mental disorders a couple of years before even Covid struck, major depressive disorder and generalised anxiety disorder. And I'm a few years away from getting my CPF monies, so as they say, mental illness can hit anyone at anytime. Covid made the depression worse, but ironically, the circuit breaker gave my anxiety a break....lol. Also not my first encounter with depression. But at least now, I'm being taught how to recognise the environment and circumstances that might trigger me, how to deal with my disorders, how to manage my anxiety because with my perfectionist personality, it's not a disorder that I will likely eradicate completely from my life.

It’s very important to have supportive family and supportive environment. Even if you don’t have one, I hope that you can just ignore all that and focus on yourself. Remember who you are as a person. Try to pick yourself up. It’s hard but it’s all worth it at the end. The journey to happiness is hard but you will enjoy it the most. I just want to tell you that good days are ahead. Your life is not full of sadness and despair. But it’s full of excitement, happiness, peace that is waiting for you at the end line. So don’t give up, the world doesn’t end here. It’s cold and lonely sometimes but it’ll be warm ahead. So please don’t give up on yourself, please be strong for yourself. Please live your life to the fullest. From someone who’s also struggling with depression but still try her best to go on in life.

This reminds me of my youngest sister, she placed so much pressure on herself because she didn't want to dissappoint everyone, and she didn't ask for help because she didn't want to cause trouble. She bottles things up and even physical pain as young as 5 years old she was able to withstand stomach pain for a whole week before telling us and only after we got to hospital did we find out it was kidney infection. What the father in this vid said to his daughter is what my parents and even myself and other siblings said to my lil sis. We also had a close call of sorts. On a school day when she was supposed to be at school, she called me up at midday and whilst sobbing asked me to come pick her up at the harbour which was 30min away from my workplace. My blood ran cold and I tried getting there as fast as I could because I was so scared she would do something. It scared our whole family and my parents had to really bite their tongue not to reprimand her for going off on her own like that. It was the worst moment I've ever experienced.

Lisa mentioned the need for validation - usual this rooted from childhood. He mentioned he scold a lot and painted a perfect picture of daugther, this type of parenting usually lead to needing validation from others or everyone. And this is not necessary due to lack of love. =) Agree it sounded he doesn't really understand. She was stunned when he said: everything also can settle one. That is not how depression feel like. I hope Lisa get better...and get all the support she needs. She still look a bit depressed and trying to surpress it.

I totally understood what you mean. I also have a same situation like you. Every days is like living in hell. So sensitive to everything. Always panic and scare. Wish won't wake up. Always think about how is the situation if i die today. Finally i went to see psychiatrist. Now better than before. But that feeling and thinking still there. Always looking for answers. Tried to understand what is the meaning and purpose of life. Buddhism help me for my mindset at this moment. If lucky, people like us can have a very good support system around, But if not, we must depend on ourself. Don't be upset if they don't understand you. Depression only can be eliminated if we can change how we see things.

The father is not listening to her. Parents only show one way to live so kiddos think they failed and are pariah if they don't toe the line. Parents must show other options and possible ways to be acceptable to society.

Yes , we have enough evidence to show that being Extreme in any undertakings are only to end in much sorrow & pain ... The path to Perfection is actually in the Middle Balance where the Appropriate Constituents working in harmony with Love , Understanding & Wisdom ... Like cooking a good dish , keeping a thriving planted aquarium or being a good gardener! ... We must wane away from being Exremist or Tiger Parents in educating others ... We all made mistakes ... Important we do not repeat our mistakes! May many innocently committed suicide be Forgiven & be Blessed to a Better World & Realm ... 🙏🕯🌷🌿🌍💜🕊

Younger chinese singaporean should try to speak their mother tongue more. The language is vaporising..in singapore. That's another sign of trying to get into a social trend and if you don't you be ostracised, a misconceptions I have noticed . More has to be done. Trying hard to be in "social norms" , trends is misleading and often causes mental stress. Forcing hard to excel in order for attention and acceptance will result in unable to face rejections. "Underperformed" mentality will ensues. Once rejection follows depression comes. It's an equation. Simply put, please exercise self-love and pior that, accept who you are and what you are. Singaporean chinese girls really needs.that because statistically, they are of the highest cases in depression in the country and diagnose with similar root causes and triggers. Stay safe and be well everyone.

Whenever I see people on videos claiming they are depressed, my immediate thought is an insecure attention seeker. I watch videos like this to see whether I am missing something because majority seem to feel bad for them.. These people seem to always have loving parents which kids like I was would only dream about. Their reasons seem to always be superficial and trivial. They constantly need validation from others. Learn to build confidence and remember that there are kids who are experiencing worse than you. Kids who are literally starving to death want to survive, and you want to die because someone said something offensive to you. For parents, ensure that you teach kids that validation from others isn’t necessary in life. All they have to do is love themselves. I feel bad for the parents who worked so hard to keep these kids alive because these kids are too obsessed over external validation. Delete your TikTok, Instagram, or whatever and live life for real.
