The problem with burnout from school is that you can't disconnect from it. You hit the burnout point and you have to just keep pushing on.

Megan Waldorf this happened to me until I literally had a mental break and had to medically withdraw and I’m just now getting my mental health back to a place where I feel I can go back to school... it’s so crappy honestly how that goes with school. I guess just trying to do as much self care as possible in the little free time you have is vital...

Oh my. I'm 27. When I was in school my senior year they let us play around with our schedules to figure out if we could get a break during the day and they made either cooking music art or even gym mandatory so we could have a non class type class. They also offered online classes we could do from home as long as we took the test at school. Schools have changed. I'm sorry there is so much pressure on you. See if you could take a hobby class like art music cooking or something to get a break. My favorite class was screen printing.

i got diagnosed with ADHD too this summer, and i struggle with this a lot. my therapist says it's called executive dysfunction. your brain decides you can't do something because you have to do it. also there's a lot of stigma around ADHD. because really don't understand it. it gives me anxiety attacks and puts me into severe depressive episodes (although i already do have depression) and people really just think i can cure myself by putting in effort.
@chickenlittle71394 жыл бұрын
@@emiliew5553 one thing thats helped me work with my adhd instead of against it is the spoon theory. the spoon theory is mainly used by people with chronic illnesses but can also be used by people with mental health issues/neurodivergencies/disabilities. so you start the day with a certain amount of spoons. those kinda represent the amount of energy you have. every task or activity you do costs a certain amount of spoons. sometimes you can get a spoon or back by eating or taking a nap but not always. another thing that helps is if you think of your energy as three batteries. one for mental energy, one for physical and one for emotional. i also spend a bunch of time looking through the adhd tags on tumblr to better understand the lesser known affects of adhd. it also just helps me feel less alone in my experiances. i follow this one blog called tfw-adhd and they answer questions about adhd. they also have a few venn diagrams showing the differences and similarities of things like anxiety, depression and adhd. i'd recomend that you check them out if you havent already. good luck navigating this weird world!

So I'm not the kind of person that usually comments on youtube videos, but I am really impressed with what you guys did. I've read a few comments about how getting a therapist for not checking your phones is over the top or dramatic and I hope no one takes that too much to heart. Burnout is not about being on your phone all the time, or working a few extra hours... it impacts all aspects of your life and your health and talking to a professional about that is an amazing step to take. I am a therapist-in-training and as someone who has both been the therapist and gone to therapy, I acknowledge it is a very brave thing to do -- to post parts of talking with a therapist is extremely vulnerable. Definitely appreciate the honesty and vulnerability you guys brought to this video.
@christinam37006 жыл бұрын
I agree. Also I feel like a lot of people miss the point, not realizing what the phone represents. It's not "oh I stopped my social media and gossiping" , its them trying to enjoy their lives, in the moment, without focusing on their work. So much of their jobs are through their phones so they used them to illustrate burnout. I thought it was clear.

Grad school burn out is real. I'm in my second year of full time grad school to get my MSW. I am at a part time internship that I not only don't get paid at, I have to pay almost 5k to do the internship. My internship is at a community mental health center. My role is as a therapist seeing severely mentally ill clients for hour sessions. It takes me an hour to get to my internship in the morning, sometimes longer depending on when I leave at the end of the day. Burn out is so real and self care is easier said then done. Its weird that I talk to my clients about self care, but haven't practiced it in a VERY long time. I make excuses like I cant because I have papers, or I have to do my notes for my clients or I have to work. It sucks that burn out is talked about, but isnt focused on in graduate school. I need a weekend like this. I just used the comments section of youtube as my therapy. It's come to youtube as my therapy.

Grad school is ROUGH on mental and physical health. I got my master's degree right after college, and then I started teaching full time. At the end of my first year teaching, I went back to school to get an additional teaching certificate (online, while still teaching). While working on that, I decided to wait a year before considering going back to school for a doctorate. It's the BEST decision I've ever made. I may end up taking another year to make up my mind which type of degree I want to pursue, do applications/interviews/auditions, and then actually get started on a doctorate. It won't be time wasted because our health is integral to our ability to finish school, do our jobs, etc. Also, I'm very sorry you're having to pay to do work. It's so wrong that in the US so many students have to pay for the opportunity to work an entry level position (internship). I really hope this changes because it's unethical for companies to require unpaid experience before offering to actually compensate workers. I was fortunate to make minimum wage at my internship in grad school. Several of my classmates worked for free, and a couple had to pay to work.

I didn't just burn out I exploded out a few years ago. I worked & studied constantly from 15 years old up until I was 27. I was a cardiac/emergency nurse and never took time off. was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, PTSD, bpd and epilepsy. now I suffer from mental meltdowns, physical pain and chronic fatigue. I don't own a mobile phone now because it caused me too much stress and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself because you can still contact people via email, home phone or online private msg. I do mindfulness, listen to music, go for drives into the country etc. Now I am starting up a small business by making custom clothing and accessories. we need to care for ourselves much more frequently, my job caused me alot of trauma and there isn't anyone at work who really cares about your mental health. listen to your body and mind. I always thought 'burnout' was an excuse made up by weak-minded layabouts with no drive or ambition. Like you, after 15 years of 16-hour days (working simultaneously as a teacher, freelance journalist, and editor), 7 days a week, I imploded. The physical went first (gall bladder, Guillain Barre, endless back and leg issues to name just a few). Then the mental started to kick in (chronic fatigue, an inability to remember anything, brain fog). Eventually, after 3 months of being in too much physical pain to even get out of bed other than for endless, useless doctors' appointments (and working all the while, just to pay for the visits, the CT scans, and the MRIs), I was mere days from a total body shutdown and death. Luckily, I called my Dad, who flew in from the other side of the world (I live alone in a foreign country), correctly diagnosed complete burnout and got me to the right doctor. Fibromyalgia is the least of my issues, but I am now 2 months into my recovery, learning to quiet my mind (so hard!), calm my body (so much cortisol!), and approach life in less of an 'all-or-nothing' manner. I still can't stand or sit up properly, and walking is months away yet, but the meditation and mindfulness is helping. This is what happens when you burnout and Keep Going... #cautionarytale

Janelle Blossom wow reading this I was like OKAY ME... because I just had a total breakdown from complete burnout and lack of self care/caring for my illnesses (both physical and mental)... I also have BPD, PTSD, fibro, and this thing called (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, EDS; you should look it up and see if it fits your symptoms because it often overlaps that stuff) and it just became too much and it’s been about 5-6 months and I’m just now getting back to thinking about going back to school and work. Self care is soooo important and not taught. We should be doing self care as religiously as we brush our teeth and shower and take care of our physical health... but we as a society just don’t value that. Thank you for sharing your story it really made me feel not so alone 💕

A really similar thing happened to me! I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and CFS at about 14/15 years old and started therapy for depression and anorexia around the same time. I was eventually hospitalised at 18 for 3 months after a completely melt down and I was basically catatonic for the first couple of weeks. I was diagnosed with PTSD while there from various things. Its been 3 years since I was first hospitalised, I’ve been in a couple more times for about 2 months each time, and I’m still incredibly burnt out and find it hard to be around people and be outside because I get sensory overloaded. So I can sort empathise with you on some of those things, obviously not everything and I can’t imagine how hard it must have been being a nurse, but it sounds like you’re doing better now which I truly find inspiring! I hope you’re as happy and healthy as you can be😊

I love how the therapist stressed mindfulness. It is so vital for mental health. I also like how this brought attention to the workaholic mindset of a large portion of the United States population. In the US, our identities are tied to our careers and how productive we are. We need to learn that people are valuable just because they exist.

Watching this I get the feeling that a lot of people are anxious about being alone with their thoughts. We all need something to do because all our negative thoughts come up and you start to think about everything and we don't want that. I believe that thinking about your life (past, present and future) and being by yourself is one of the greatest fears we have without really realizing that

She made the best of what was available. If I was there I'd have been trying to get everyone to go for a walk or something. I think that's one of the main issues with burnout.. you just forget you can find pleasure and fun in the simplest of things.

i think it'll reassure you to know that they probably did more than think about their phones, they probably mostly just vlogged the parts where they were talking about it. i totally agree with you though, i'd love to go to a place like this and unplug

one thing : FOMO those girls are living in a social media word and work environment. unplugging means being dead to the world. but in reality NOTHING happens. Notifications can wait a day unlessi someone dear to you is in the hospital, you didn't miss anything. I tried a couple times, being away and unplugged for a day not looking at my phone at all and when i turn it back on, I didn't miss anything at all. People have lives, you have a life. You don't need to stay connected. It took me a while and i'm still rather guilty because part of my job is online but I do know the benefit of unplugging and going somewhere with no cell service is fine. Wether i'm alone or not. If I'm going to unplug, I'll let my friends know, they know where to find me. I think it's very symptomatic of the millenials but more so recent generations. At least millenials remember the time without internet or cellphones. I mean it's easy to remember, I spent the first 13/14 years of my life being unplugged. It's a recent system, we are prone to connecting with people but not via a device. If you go deeper, you'll realize you can connect and stay relevant in other ways. Just go to place, to people. stay connected with yourself, I didn't even have internet on my phone for a long time I spent 20 years without a cellphone. I think it's important also to teach to kids that it's only a tool and you shouldn't become a slave of it.

I agree but you absolutely can miss out on things.. and you should at least be aware of your loved ones in case of emergencies so you can be reached and so you can reach them.

My country is a bit back on technology, so I can clearly remember how it was without technology and internet and I honestly wish I had that time back. A few years ago, when me and my best friend used to meet up, we could to play with dolls, play chase, act as power rangers, play with children (aka lil cousins and siblings), pretend picnic and things like that. The last time we met up (two years ago) both of us were on our iPad, and playing games all day long. I can remember what it was like ; how we used to do things/play when we were 5 years old but not how we spent the whole day when we were 13.

So this past weekend I had the best experience of my life. My school had this trip/camp thing called Minitown where everyone goes up to a camp for a weekend, surrenders their phone for the entire time, and talks about feelings and identity and such. I went, and without my phone I wasn’t stressed AT ALL. It was soooo amazing. I didn’t think about school or my various sports and clubs or drama and instead focused on finding myself and my identity, and learning about other people and their families/experiences. It was honestly the best choice I could have ever made to go to Minitown and I felt safe and loved and accepted and carefree. I know it’s not practical for many people to give up their phone for long periods of time, but just a weekend with your friends and without your phone makes a HUGE impact. 💙
I relate to this so hard. I always feel so much pressure to check texts and emails and notifications because there's such an expectation in society today to be always be available and be immediately responsive. IMO it's not unrelated to the increasing amounts of stress we face from work and school. Anyone else know what I mean?
@HelloMsAnny6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I totally know what you mean, especially work. I don't have many friends so no one's expecting me to respond, but if I'm not available for my job, I'll be unemployed in a very short amount of time. I can't change my need to be available until society changes and stops expecting it. It's great to disconnect and have good mental health, but I doubt being unemployed and homeless is gonna make me happy xD

I don't see the purpose of this. I mean yes, mindlessly watching shit tv for hours on end is probably a bad habit, but whenever I tune into Netflix it's to watch a certain thing. Why is it better to listen to music than watching anime or whatever?

I was in burnout for about a year before I quit my job and it was really taking a tole on me and my personal life. I got another job and manipulated my schedule so that I quit my previous job, went on a beach vacation and when I came back I started my new job which really helped. It pulled me out of my slump that I was in and My life is so much happier now.

I've seen this one at least 3 times, and every time I am always thankful that I don't have a job like this team. Soooo many times I've wondered what it's like to work making internet content, but then I remember that I get burned out regularly with a people-oriented job that doesn't require constant social media access. I can't even imagine how quick burn out sets in with this career. Thank y'all for doing what you do!

Every year my family and I rent a cabin in the woods and stay there for about four days. This cabin is deep enough in the woods that there is no wifi or cell reception and it just me and my family. We have fun in the outdoors, play games, and just enjoy each others company. I look forward to this trip every year because it's nice just getting to leave the world behind for a couple of day. It's a really nice, beautiful place. There are about 15 cabins on the grounds so there are other families as well. But it's nice to sit around a table and get way too competitive over a game of trivial pursuit.

Would've been interesting to see how they got on longer being unplugged. I've had a rough 6-8 months at work, dealing with a mountain of stress and pressure that I've burnt out and had to take time off to focus on myself. Something I have learnt is that you have to be selfish, you have to put yourself first because no one else will, and if that means washing your hands of work for a week then so be it--things there will carry on without you, there is no point being a martyr for work.
