Horror story: my first quick change was during a recital when I had a LOT of dances. I had a blackout and about 3 8 counts to change tights, shoes, hair, headpieces, and costumes. I ran off stage into the pitch black side room and people were helping me and I got onto stage at the right time. I thought everything was good. BUT we were doing a circle and my friend casually whispered that my costume was on backwards midway through the dance. Thankfully I was fully covered and the only difference from the front and back was patterned beading but it was stressful.

I have low iron deficiency which at this time i was unaware of and i have a weird bone structure in my feet which causes them to cramp up all the time. it was a solid three seconds of me stepping out of the curtain, i did a front kick and my bottom foot completely shot out from under me, i honestly had such a good recovery and fell weirdly gracefully so i thought i was good. then about another 10 seconds of our dance go by and i step down on my foot and roll over my ankle because it went completely numb. in the heat of the moment i had no clue what was going on so i tried to stand on it again and just fell to the floor. i wasn’t able to stand at all so i had to CRAWL ON ALL FOURS OFF THE MIDDLE OF THE STAGE. i was bawling my eyes out backstage while someone was trying to get the cramp out of my foot as i’m also trying to change into my ballet costume because it would be coming up in one dance. i was about 20 seconds late coming onto stage for my ballet dance but i found a perfect time to run on stage and right as i ran out a girl threw her arms into a high v and smacked my face and hit my eye which was covered in wet mascara from crying that just got smeared everywhere. i then had to do three more very upbeat high energy dances which i cried through the whole time. and just to add a cherry on top this was the first time my very first boyfriend had ever seen me dance.

We went on stage and I danced with full energy giving it my all, I looked around and everyone had horror faces and were mouthing things to me but I could not understand what anyone was saying. When I got off stage everyone pulled me and asked me to go to the bathroom and that's when I realised my triangle shiny thing had fallen off and I just had displayed things I really didnt want to my entire school.

I never got far into dance so I never had any true 'horror' stories but when I was young I joined a new dance company that was really small and there were only a couple of other girls in my class. As time went on more and more girls stopped coming until it was just me for months. There was a performance at the end of the year essentially to show mastery but since I was the only girl left in the class I was going to have to do it as a solo. Then before the performance one of the girls came back, she had no idea what we were doing since she was gone for so long and I had to perform with her when she just copied everything I did. I was pretty upset about it because I had worked hard on the performance for a long time and she just stepped in and took away from my hard work

I have an horror story ^^ I'm 17 and this happened two years ago. My -small- company was doing the nutcracker and I was dancing the Spanish dance as a soloist, I was in a very bad state of mind at that time of my life and hadn't learned how to live with anxiety yet so I was handling my life very poorly. So basically this solo had me having several mental breakdowns and hating myself for not living up to my own expectations. So now that you have context, my solo was the last dance I had for the night, all the other dances went smoothly and I was satisfied enough with myself (surprisingly) but I was SO FREAKING STRESSED for my solo, I was shaking really badly and basically had no confidence. So I'm on the side of the stage waiting and there's still one song before it's my turn but for unknown reasons, my song comes first and I am not prepared at all, so I'm on the side panicking and I simply don't feel capable of going on stage so late and improvising. The music stops and my dance teacher says in the microphone that it's an error and we'll start again. The music starts again (still in the wrong order) I go on stage shaking like crazy still freaking out. I'm not even 20seconds in and suddenly, it's a black hole I can't remember anything and I freeze on stage silently panicking and trying to remember but literally nothing goes in my mind. In my head I'm going "oh my god this is happening I'm freezing on stage and I have no idea what to do" out of complete despair I run off the stage (I still cannot forgive myself for that) I literally run in my friend arms and cry until the music stops, again, and my teacher talks on the mic, again, she was so chill and she just came to me reassuring me saying it'll be fine, I'm a crying mess with 0 confidence and she just get me back on stage while smiling to me and she talked to the audience, I don't remember what she said but the audience clapped and she said we would just rehearse on the stage live, so she's with me and we're doing the steps together and at the exact moment we went through the moment I froze the whole choreography came. back to my mind and I was like "obviously". So we end our "live rehearsal" the audience clapped again and I re did the whole dance like nothing had happened and I think I actually did good. When I was finished I went backstage to end properly my panic attack and finished the show. Later on my teacher whom i love dearly praised me and many people praised me. It took me so long to accept what happened and to admit that i actually did good afterwards but now i know it's a good experience i learned from and i am forever grateful to my teacher who saved me and didn't let me give up, also she handled the situation so well I could never thank her enough ^^ (sorry if the way I'm telling the story is clumsy english isn't my first language)

Oh my god this brought back memories of one of my ballet exams. Now I was stressed but I knew I had the routine down so I along with the other girls stretched and we entered the room. All of the routine went great I felt like I was dancing on air, the examiner was smiling. It was great. Until... my heel AND my ankle on my right foot (my goddamn dominant foot) just sprained so I was in violent pain but I was not about screw up my score so I was dancing and gritting my teeth into a smile. Unfortunately the examiner noticed STOPPED THE ROUTINE and told my to go home (nicely obvs he knew it wasn't my fault) because I was injured. I was both mortified and relieved. Luckily I got a great score unluckily I couldn't dance for weeks. Edit:ok I know everyone hates this but... Omg thank you guys. Who knew that my embarrassment could be a source of people's laughter 😅

I relate so hard to the judges having favorites and judging on reasons out of the persons control like the costume issue. I used to figure skate and I remember this one time a was at competition and I got 3rd and last (only 3 girls in my category). The mother of the second place girl actually came up to my mom and told her look that was unfair your daughter skated better than mine and the first place girl. But both those girls were members of that club and rink. (So it was nice that she acknowledged and explained the biases). I’m also fairly sure that I got judged harsher at a competition because my dress was super simple off the shelf and another girls was covered in rign stones and just sparkled like crazy.

My horror story: So once I had A Solo on a beautiful peice. So I did my hair, my makeup. As I got ready to put my costume on ( it was almost my turn ) I didn't find it. Turns out I left it at home. So I was freaking out and my teacher just gave me my friends tutu and was like: " this'll do! " I got on stage and as I was halfway through the dance one of my pointed shoes untied itself. And I didn't notice. I was too focused on getting everything right. So I did a leap and fell flat on the floor. Everything went silent all I could hear was the song playing.I looked at the judges and burst out crying. It hurts I couldn't get up! I heard some giggles from the audience, and two men had to lift me off the stage cause I was just there laying on the ground. It was my moment to shine! I didn't place! But hey at least I can laugh about it now!

Dancers are so well trained in moving on like nothing is wrong that it becomes part of how we handle all conflict. My dad left my wedding reception in an ambulance and half the guests didn't even realize because I went on as though nothing happened. I didn't stick to pointe long, BUT I did studio competition team, studio classes, school teams, and a pro team. I remember a performance in which a teammate's hair extension flew out of her hair during a series of pirouettes. She just kept smiling and figured out a way to kick it off stage. At competitions, you get points docked for leaving anything on the stage. That same teammate also won a judges' special award for Best Solo Within A Group Routine later that day with another number, but she didn't have a solo. She just forgot the choreography and was so convincing that her different dance moves were planned, that they gave her an award. I was 12. I started telling myself that I always need to be as confident as that teammate. The show must go on!

So I have another ballet horror story, my dad used to be a professional ballet dancer. At one point in a dance that he was performing, both him and his partner were supposed to spin to the left in unison but for some reason his partner span to the right. Her head crashed into his nose and suddenly he was in a lot of pain. He finished the seance and went backstage he was obviously in pain but he thought he had just bruised his nose butttttttt....... for the second half of the ballet he had wear a mask and it pressed again his nose and suddenly he was in so much pain. The choreographer told him to go to hospital. Turns out he’d broken his nose.

One year I was doing Waltz of the Flowers in my studio's production of the Nutcracker and 1.5 minutes into the song -- as I was mid-jump coming back on stage -- THE MUSIC STARTED SKIPPING THEN STOPPED COMPLETELY. I could feel the collective horror of my fellow dancers but we kept going as if nothing happened. It turned out to be absolutely remarkable though -- we were in synch for the rest of the dance! Granted my artistic director was basically sobbing in the wings, along with our Dewdrop who was in tears as she was dancing, but we ended with a triumphant standing ovation! I'll NEVER forget my heart practically stopping hearing the music skip as I was mid-saute arabesque. LOL

I have a few stories lmao 1 - when i was clara, there was this tug-of-war scene between fritz and clara all of the party children behind them. The boys win the tug-of-war, and the girls fall to the ground. when we fell, my curls got c a u g h t on my dress ! and the mothers are supposed to go check on the girls, and when she checks on me i tell her about the situation and we make this decision in about 30 seconds to r i p my h a i r out. it was wild. 2 - During that same performance, at intermission (the 15 minutes in between acts) I had to go redo my hair (because of the previous story) and my dance teacher redid it so fast and all was well and good. But as I'm walking on stage for the second half, i feel this stabbing pain in my head and it was one bobby pin sticking into my head that i couldn't fix (cause I was on stage). I stayed on stage for the whole second half and hour and a half) and I was crying by the end of it. As soon as the curtains closed, I ripped out all of the bobby pins in my head. It was the most painful experience. 3 - last year, my sister was performing in the snow scene, which is most dangerous because we have little bits of paper that fall from the ceiling to give the actual snowing effect. Everything was going great, and it's my sister's favourite piece. but as she comes on stage and does a grand batma (big kick), her foot slipped out from under her and she and fell on her side. she got up and nobody noticed because of all the girls onstage, but she couldn't really walk for a week.

Omg I feel Lena’s fear in her first story. So a couple of years ago, we were dancing Don Quixote/Quichotte and there was this part where the female lead dancer had to first do a solo en pointe and then a duet with her partner en pointe. In the middle of her solo her pointe shoe starts untying itself and eventually she kicked her shoe off into the wings of the stage(backstage) and then started dancing on one pointe shoe and one shoeless foot. Then they had to delay the show because she had to run all the way to her dressing room to get another pair which was one floor down. And she cried after the performance, but she completely nailed it. She was wonderful.

Once me and my duet partner we’re going against another lyrical duet from our studio. They always seemed to place better than us so we were surprised when this happened. We were onstage and we messed up the choreography like we were supposed to switch spots but we never did. When we realized we froze up and stared at each other for a couple of seconds then we just smiled and went on with the dance and fixed it later. We were super surprised that we finished better than the other girls from our studio!!
