Strange thing about japanese is that when grammar is explained, it seems soo confusing and even this video is hard to get the hang of. But after using japanese for a while (like when i lived in Tokyo), grammar just falls naturally even though you cant explain why it is used. Its so weird, but i really love the japanese language, its so much fun to learn.

this is interesting, just started learning Japanese on Duolingo in prep for my upcoming trip to Japan next year (I don't expect to be fluent, but i'd like to know some basics to help with communication) and I notice I'm being taught Kudasai when asking for food like mizu o kudasai and I thought this might be an incorrect way of asking this (finally my years of watching anime sub is coming to help) and was googling to confirm, thanks for this very informative video.

It would have been nice for you to provide explanations for why one must be used or cannot be used. It’s not very helpful to simply say “Because that would just not make sense!” Why would that not make sense? For example, what is it about kudasai that makes it not make sense in the context of services. As it is, the video is helpful only for straight memorizing the specific situations mentioned in the video but it doesn’t help me understand Japanese or apply any grammar to situations that are not directly addressed in the video.

+Gustavo Takachi Toyota Hi Gustavo Takachi Toyota, Thank you for posting!! This is a good question! "Choudai" is very casual expression of "kudasai" and it's used just same as "kudasai". For example; Mizu o choudai. "Give me a water." Mado o akete choudai. "Open the window." *We often omit "choudai" after te-form of verb, like "Mado o akete." "Choudai" is really casual spoken Japanese and often used, but be careful when it shoud be used. Hope this helps you! Keep studying withe JapanesePod101.com!

When do you use "no" particle or "waga". I hear them quite a lot in Anime to describe possession but how do you decide when to use which.
@Rationalific
@Rationalific 9 жыл бұрын
+Rangga Wiratno "No" is the main particle for possession. So, "Watashi no..." or "Boku no..." mean "My..." "Kare no..." means "His..." "Sensei no..." means "The teacher's...", etc. "Waga...", I believe, is a traditional/antiquated way of saying only "My..." I think it's only used normally in certain phrases, and besides that maybe sometimes with "overlord-type" anime villains. At least, that's what I've gleaned so far.

what is the diffence between kedo and dakedo
@toomoii
@toomoii 9 жыл бұрын
+Francis Garcia "da" is the stem form of "desu". So if you want to combine two sentences with "kedo" sometimes you need to put a "da" at the end of the first half making it "dakedo". (it's a grammar thing) for example: "ii ie dakedo takai desu" - it's a nice place but too expensive. I think it is also possible to say "desu kedo". Also at the beginning of a new sentence you have to use "da" first with "kedo"

Hi, sorry i'm french and I'm not sure if i understood, i just have one question ... is "kudasai" only use with "te" and never with another situation? I mean, kudasai can never be use without "te" ? And onegai shimasu is use every time that "te" is not use, right?
@andrewmori563
@andrewmori563 8 жыл бұрын
+Madness Angel Te-form + kudasai means "please (do verb)." Like in the video, you can ask for a noun by saying "(noun) wo kudasai." However, in some situations, a different meaning could be implied. For example, in the video, asking the father for his daughter with "kudasai" could imply marriage permission. Onegai shimasu is a politer request for nouns or services, I think. Asking for someone on the phone also uses onegai shimasu. This isn't used with te-form verbs.
