As part of my "Ask A Master Tech" series, I decided to tackle the question of "Where will I start out". My wife works in retail and often comments on the hilarity of fresh out of college types that roll in and apply for a management position with no experience.
That is just not how it works.. No matter how good you think you are, you have to prove it, and to prove it, You'll have to start at the bottom like everyone else. In this episode I'll talk about the real way techs move up the ladder and what each rung will bring as far as pay and what jobs you will be required to preform at those levels.
For guys and gals that have no idea what goes on in a shop, this is quite an eye opener, but the skill levels in an average shop vary greatly from tech to tech and that is 100% OK!

i went a different rte, i started as a lot boy at a Harley/Yamaha dealer when i was 14 in the early 70's and i hung out in my free time with the mechanics and parts guy's learned what i could, made it to as you described a "B" tech, then i became a Service Writer/Advisor, then a warranty clerk lead service writer, and i kept training in my mechanic's and on paper (Via Harley-Davidson's PHD system) became a PHD Master of Technology, but rather than twist wrenches i became an Ast. Service Manager, then Service Manager and finally a dealer GM, so there are several directions one could go in a career.

A different path, but the same end result. It sounds like you had a great career over that run.

I used to always watch my friend from across the block operate on cars and motorcycles all the time and respect the work that they had to do. It’s very intense but I realize that someone has got to fix it or things will definitely flatline for sure. Kudos to you and people like you for all that you do. Electric and Electronic stuff still fails as well and I’m happy that you have got no fear of it and even embrace it. Happy that you keep yourself busy in these crazy times.

Thanks. As the years roll on, these cars are becoming more and more of a task to fix. The pure mechanical mechanic is quickly becoming extinct. The future is electric.

@@FarpointFarms when I was a kid my parents owned a real VW chartreuse microbus. Every time they would go to the VW place they would not only fix what was wrong with it but take out all the other bugs too and the cost was tremendous. We quickly quit using them and hired someone ourselves to do the job. This is a case of I’m happy that you are able to do that. We would have loved to have you around when I was a kid. It’s a very work intensive thing. I’ve watched my friends fix up the old car or motorcycle.

I too am ASE Certified Master L1 Tech. GM paid for it all over a 23 Year Career. I started as a lube tech back in the 90’s and worked my way up

How do you feel about the crap that's going on now?, GM is pulling the plug on internal combustion in the near future, when I heard that, I was besides myself.

@@ericdee6802 Every automaker is making the push to electric vehicles. They have a government mandate for zero emissions within the next 15 years. There hands are kinda tied, go electric or go out of business.

It's been quite a change over these last 20+ hasn't it? Part of me really misses those days, but some of the newer stuff is really cool too. The amount of time it takes to work on them has skyrocketed though.

@@FarpointFarms Early 2000’s was mostly 3100/3400 engines that was in every GM Car. You get Very good at Intake gaskets after a few hundred of them.. Lol

Back when I worked on VW's and Porsche's, our shop had specific mechanics assigned to their speciality's. We had an engine builder that only blueprinted engines on paper, then there was the engine builder that built the engines per the blueprint, we had a suspension dept, then the transaxle area, the R&R guys and a couple of shop keepers. Funny thing is the owner who did all the math and blueprints was a friggen master at his craft, but you hand him a wrench, he was all thumbs. Although we all knew each other's jobs and how to perform them, the shop just seemed to flow like a stream when everyone was doing what they liked to do most.

The first shop I was at was like that. We all had our strong points and the boss was wise enough to put up where we shined. It worked really well.

Absolutely an amazing video! I've been struggling to figure out where I stand in this technician skill tree and this video has made me realize how much I've grown as a tech in 2 years of this industry. as I currently stand I've only worked on Toyota's in a dealer setting and currently maintain "Expert" status in electrical and chassis. now i'm looking to move on and cant really decide if i want to try other manufactures or just stick to what i know. Thank you for this amazing vid and break down!

As a 14 year tech and the last 10 year master tech and recert. The younger heads now a days simply don’t wanna learn and don’t wanna “keep it simple stupid” and learn how to keep up friends in the shop and not make ole heads no wanting to even learn your name 😊

I’ve been a Ford Technician my whole career, 16 years. I’m currently a Ford Master Cert Tech. Honestly I don’t wanna work on anything else lol. Even though I have. And I agree with how you broke it down. The problem I see is kids don’t want to wait to move up. And it’s a cycle until you find someone serious about the field.

Also where I’m at I do a lot of electrical, drive ability, and engine repair. Not much on transmissions except for the standard R&I.

How do you become a mechanic for show vehicles
@FarpointFarms
@FarpointFarms 7 ай бұрын
My advice is to work on becoming a really good mechanic- Know why things work the way they do, how to do diagnostic with and without the tools (the theory of it). Having fancy name brand tools does not make you a good mechanic so get what you can afford. Once you get good-(this can take some time so be patient), connect with those who work on the show cars, promote yourself and what you are good at- Some mechanics are great with engines, transmissions, electrical etc.. Don't be afraid to ask others about how to do something- Why struggle bus for hours when the tech next to you can give you a tip to do the job in minutes- Be confident but not cocky. Good luck to you
