This week's question comes from Dr. Paul Camarata (neuro surgeon and host of the SaintCast podcast). Great answer from Fr. Barron. Had some neat insights/perspectives that I hadn't really heard before that I really liked.

It would be interesting to see how Robert Barron addresses David Hume's critique of 'miracles'.

Fr. Barron, I follow the analogy of the water into wine as an intensification of the laws of nature as you suggest is what we think of as a miracle also it could be applied to a healing if that healing is minor, however, in the case of a crippled person or blind from birth it is contrary in my mind. Can you help? Thanks and God blessyou.

This video is very helpful, but I am craving further elaboration. Father indicates that miracles must amaze and have a cause we "don't know *immediately*". So, if we are amazed (in the moment) by something that points to a higher reality, but we later discover an explanation in terms of secondary causality, is it still a miracle? (Personally, I would be happy to say that it was still a miracle, but I am wondering to what extent this view is consistent with the history of Catholic thought.) Thank you!

As I see it, the problem with the Augustinian view as propounded here, is that for Jesus to have turned water into wine in such a short period of time would present such technical difficulties as to be practically impossible. So although you may have avoided saying that the laws of nature are suspended absolutely, they would in fact have to have been suspended for the miracle to be factually true.

These videos are great. Are they older, though? I notice that Fr. Barron is speaking in what I believe is his old office.

An event: 1) Observable 2) beyond natural explanation 3) happens immediately; spontaneously. The Gospel description of Jesus turning water into wine. Acts: Peter gives a beggar healing in the Name of Jesus.

God is infinitely more capable than man-in all ways. Are you saying that God could not ferment wine? Or wouldn't?

Fr. Barron, I've recently found myself (a Catholic) debating with atheists and "non-theists" about the miracles in the NT including the resurrection. Does the Catholic Church teach a particular kind of belief in these events e.g. literal, metaphorical, etc? I'm fairly sure it teaches literal belief in the bodily resurrection but I'm having trouble adducing evidence for that. Moreover, I'm not sure in what sense I "should" believe in the exorcisms, healings and nature miracles. Please help. If you think it best, please recommend good books on the subject (I've just ordered NT Wright's book on the resurrection, by the way). Thanks in advance. M.

Recommend you read the book "Miracles" by C.S. Lewis. Lewis provides a very good explanation of miracles in general and interpretation of them but also delves into the miracles described in the Gospel accounts. Lewis' book also happens to be on the Vatican's reading list at vatican.va.

this is music to my ears. sure God has all the means to violate nature but if he did it implies that he didn't think of his miracle in advance, which is not the type of thing God would do.

John 2:9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, ( When the ruler of the feast had tasted) Matt 25:2 The five foolish virgins. ( The water that was made wine ) this was Jesus first miracle biologically speaking. Before the biological miracle could take place there had to be first a spiritual miracle within the mind of his spirit, that had to first take place. Jesus had to change the unconscious into consciousness. Jesus transcended the unconscious through transformation of consciousness. the unconscious represents that of (water) eternal darkness. The consciousness represents that of (wine) the mind of the spirit of God. And the 144,000 are going to have to do the same thing if you want that white rope. The same transformation of unconsciouses into consciousness has to take place in you as well. And I'm not speaking about receiving the White robe in the by-and-by I'm speaking on The here and now while in your Earth suit. ( and knew not whence was) because The foolish virgins try to operated The spirit of truth The same way you would operate something in Christianity. (But the servants which drew the water new) The 144,000 Drew the unconsciouses out of them selves. (The governor of the feast) which is The Alpha. (Call the bridegroom) The Spirit of Truth.

a miracle would be for Bhp Barron to reject modernism. to embrace the roman catholic church as the one true church. to admit holy tradition along with holy scripture is the sole identity of the catholic church. to reject all heresies and especially protestant-ism... that truth is not found in the innumerous protestant beliefs nor any other religion... which is today, in a real sense... pantheism... since each prot is a belief system unto himself multiplied by millions and millions. the bhp must also admit that the church did not begin with Vatican II.. and that the latin mass, socalled, was never abrogated and remains in effect in perpetuity. the bhp needs to tell that no other religion leads to ones salvation... that is exclusive to the holy catholic church alone... as Christ gave her to us men and for our salvation. the good bishop has an awful lot to rethink and admit.... and by doing so he will actually show what a real miracle is.
