Talk To Me In Korean

11 жыл бұрын

When texting, people tend to shorten words to make the message shorter and/or to type faster. In Korean, too, people use lots of 'shorthand' Korean when texting. In this Ask Hyojin Episode, Hyunwoo, Keith and Hyojin go over some widely used shorthand Korean phrases and talk about how they are used, and how people feel about them. Enjoy!

Coming from an American perspective, I thought that ㅈㅅ was short hand for "Just Saying" and at first I mistook ㅊㅋ for ㅈㅋ, which I thought was for "Just Kidding". I enjoyed the video, very interesting! You guys are funny, too!

I personally like: *캬아~* Kyaah~ (English: Very Excited Laughing Somewhat Uncontrollably) *ㅋㅋㅇㅋ* Keke_oke (English: A different way for me to write ㅋㅋ or ㅋㅋㅋ) *진짜아!* Jinjjaa! (English: Oh my god that happened are you serious!?) *ㅇㅁ* Omo (English: Excited; usually to express congratulations towards someone) *ㅅㅈ!?* Simjang!? (English: Seriously? WTF? How? Wha---?) *애배* AeBae (English: Hello honey / Hey friend / Wanna talk friend?) *:ㄷ* :( (English: Another emoticon for the frowning face) _To be honest using a Colon+AnyConsonant is an emoticon to me lol_

I've used ㅋㅋ a lot already when texting with Koreans. So useful. I want to use it when texting with anyone now if there's anything funny. Much better than using lol.

HazewinDog Exactly. People that use 'lol' all the time have given it a bad name. And 'ㅋㅋ' has a more natural feel to it to me. It feels more like as actual laugh.

Were people using flip phones in korea in the older days? In Canada the reason why short-hand texting came into play is because it look like 30 minutes to write out a single sentence because you had to tap the number 1 three times in order to swap over the letters on the pad. So 1 would be associated to ABC, 2 would be DEF, etc. The whole alphabet was set up that way. I'm thinking maybe the mentality was the same when texting culture came about in Korean technology?

Thank you for the video. I have had some sms:ing with some korean girls and the ''kkkk'' confused me at some point, where I didn't know if it was laughing or rater ''Ok, whatever''. I didn't ask because I thought it would have been rude so I had to figure out myself which didn't take long but still, it was at the cost of being confused at alot of sms:s. This will help some people so thank you xD

ㅊㅋis considered more of a cute/excited version of 축하 usually it goes like ㅊㅋㅊㅋbut for ㅈㅅ..u never say 죄송to your friends..if you think about who do you say 죄송to..it's so obvious why they find it insincere/rude.

Nope. It's more like darn. For example if a teacher assigns homework and then asks students to do extra for a higher grade, then says it's due the next day and that it's actually mandatory. The student(s) would say "헐" which is equivalent to "why?", "what?," "huh?!", "unbelievable"(also 말도 안돼). It's an expression of surprise, or mild shock when you aren't expecting something to happen. I think I'm mostly correct about this. Not sure though.

@schederpetel
@schederpetel 11 жыл бұрын
Doesn't it just depend on context? Sometimes you just go 먄, ㅈㅅ as a swift apology, where one probably wasn't really necessary anyway. I mean, you can easily say 죄송합니다 and be super rude as well. It just didn't make sense logically that a halfhearted sorry, made him upset, while a halfhearted congratulation didn't.
