[Ask Hyojin] How much Konglish do you understand? [TalkToMeInKorean]

Are you familiar with Konglish? Many Korean learners often find it difficult to spell or pronounce Konglish words. However, when you study Korean, sometimes you hear some broken English expressions commonly used in Korean, or a foreign word pronounced like a Korean word.
In this episode of Ask Hyojin, Hyojin and Ben, from London, England, introduce some Konglish words.

Daniellynet I know the basics and I can understand about 40% of what they say in dramas, songs, shows... but still, I need subs to understand fully what they are saying. I think that I should start korean courses to improve, it will be easy for me I guess

My children used to say the following Konglish: 아빠, come here봐!; 언니, 누워 here; if you don't 하지마 you're dead 고기! My two daughters understand Korean but they reply in Konglish.

Most of them are similar to Wasei Eigo (Japanese words that sound like English but not quite). In Japan the call mechanical pencil "shaapu" because Sharp (a Japanese company) was the first company that invented mechanical pencil.

Haha - Skin-ship. This makes sense in English imo. E.g. - "Those two have got some serious skin-ship going on." Anyone else think that "skin-ship" can mean "touchy-feely" in the contexts they talked about?

oooohhh in the US, korean americans use the term "konglish" to describe the broken half korean, half english we speak if we're not so fluent in korean! so i often communicate in "konglish" with my korean relatives. my korean professor also described these kinds of vocabulary as "loan words." thanks for the video!

"Talent" is also a word we use in English as well, normally we'd say they are "the talent" and it usually refers to a famous person that has a contract to be a performer or it also applies to athletes. Like, a music label or acting agency will call their clients who they promote as a performer "the talent." It can be used to refer to an individual, or all of their actors/singers/athletes as a group.

Some of these words used to be used in English. For example, Notebook. When laptop computers both came out, they were either called notebook or laptop computers in English. Companies used to advertise them as both in English speaking countries.

People here in the USA actually call cellphones "handphones" sometimes. My grandmother calls cell phones by that name. Just thought that was interesting.

I think "talent" is what managers called their artistes in the past. So I understand it's meaning in konglish. Not sure if they still do now.

I work in the film biz and we refer to actors/actress as "the talent" and have seen during variety shows and dramas that many of the terms they use on set are similar to the ones we use.

We use Notebook in German as well, but it's less common than Laptop. And we call cell/mobile phones Handy, which I guess you could call Denglisch (Deutsch + Englisch/German + English).
