Ask May: How to Manage a Difficult Team Member?

I recently asked “What’s the biggest challenge in your career right now?” and many people responded with their challenges and asked how to overcome them.
This is a question I received:
“I have a team member that challenges me in public. I had a serious talk with the person six months ago and they really withdrew and hardly said a word. Then we talked some more and they said, ‘Well, I’m just very emotional. You should ignore it.’ But the problem continues to persist. This person is very talented and is my right-hand person. What should I do?”

an employee who deliveries results and a manager who doesn't like to be challenged openly and the advice here was to tame or consider firing the employee, hmmm....
