I liked your honest response regarding veganism. Having never even considered it, I initially went vegetarian as a New Year's Resolution and then vegan a few months later. That was 4 years ago and I've never looked back or eaten so healthily. It does help living in Brighton where there are plenty of like minded individuals and ample eateries to choose from.

Because that's what Middle England wants and that's where the swing seats are. As a method of winning an election it's sensible, given the voting system we have. The problem is that inevitably you get identikit parties designing their appearance and policies to appeal to the same people, causing anyone outside that group to be ignored. That's what we have now and have had since the mid 1990s. Starmer is going on about some mythical indigenous workforce he'd prefer - solely designed to appeal to racists in middle class, middle income Middle England. Same with Streeting whining on about how he sees the path to improvement in public services as having to come from the private sector. Politics in the UK is solely concerned with the interests and prejudices of a narrow band of people. It makes the political class a parasite on the voters outside this important demographic. If we want to change that then we'll need PR and proper, effective media regulation. Don't hold your breath.

Private education is an awful institution. My school was a grammar school for my first couple of years, then it became independent. I was able to carry on there because the local educational authority paid my fees. The school became a bastion of snobbery, we were told repeatedly that we were in the "top 1% of the population", we were the people who would go on to run the country. And this was an ex-grammar school, not Eton! The people running the school really did think we were better than everyone else simply because it was an independent school. I see no reason why these schools can be called charities and enjoy the tax breaks and other benefits that charitable status confers. If independent schools aren't abolished they should certainly be treated just like any other business. There's nothing laudable about teaching the offspring of the rich to see themselves as our natural rulers.

Owen, nothing is ever going to stop me liking you as a person but I have to disagree with you about the issue of animal rights v. welfare. Any sentient being needs a basic set of rights. I know they might not in the traditional way be able to contribute to forming the structure of those rights but that puts the obligation on we beings able to form moral choices to air on the side of caution. Most of the animal industrial structures under a capitalist framework rely on the exploitation of the female reproductive system. Intersectionality should extend to other species as there is no reason other than taste, pleasure and profit to continue the status quo. Love you, but I do hope I make you think as you have done re myself.

When did you mutate into a cheerleader for royalty, Owen? I hate to write this about my journalistic hero, but more fool me, for believing your supposed visceral opposition to the very idea of royalty. It turns out this opposition was always contingent and not principled at all. For you’ve mutated into an eager cheerleader for a royal, just because she calls herself a feminist eco-warrior and champion of social justice, her countless, brazen falsehoods and hypocrisies in regard to each of these causes be damned. On the vegan/vegetarian issue I think you're looking at it wrong. You said you didn't want to start until you could fully commit but every meal is an opportunity to cause less animal suffering. Even if you're a vegan you're still causing *some* animal suffering. Just far, far less than a non-vegan. There is no point of ethical perfection to currently be reached. Even if a few meals a week you have lentils, beans, tofu, tempeh, etc instead of meat you're making a difference because fewer animals will get bred into a life of suffering. Maybe just try being as vegan as you can be for now.

if I went through the other comments it would take me 10 years to get through a show, I struggled to get through the superchats as it was! and "cash for scandals" refers to the corruption of parliamentary democracy where rich people buy themselves political influence, I really don't think that's relevant!
