Күн бұрын

For nearly two years now, I've been using this channel to explore questions relating to wars, defence strategy and economics. I've been able to do so because of the unwavering support from all of you.
So today, as a way to welcome 2024, I'm answer your questions for a change:
What are the modern roles for tactical nuclear weapons?
How have Special Operations Forces been used in Ukraine?
Would I rather fight a cruiser sized duck or a thousand duck sized cruisers?
What can I tell you about the Perun audience?
And how did this "Perun" bloke end up talking about Defence Economics anyway?
Hope you enjoy this special episode, and we'll be back to regular content next week.

I have always had a good feeling about the Chieftain, he seemed like a true chad to me, and frankly not many people trigger that reaction. For what it's worth, I had the exact same reaction to you while listening to the bling video. I simply felt certain that here was a guy who could be trusted, and who knew what the hell he was talking about. As a resultI, (and I suspect many other people), trust you to give us your best and most honest assessment of these and other issues. You might be wrong about something, but I feel certain you won't lie to us. Thank you for that, as it's a lot more rare than we can afford as a species. Thank you, in short, for being one of the good guys.

Democracy is like all the stages of grief fr.
@Wustenfuchs109
@Wustenfuchs109 4 ай бұрын
It is an eternal question, to which there is no real answer. Because every metric you would use as "right" and "good" have different meanings to different people. I personally fall in the camp that is anti-democratic because, very simply, I think that if you are doing a job, you should be skilled for it and that should be the only thing that matters. And leading a country, or one of its sectors/segments, is one hell of a job. I really don't like the idea of that job being filled by popularity contest. Does democracy (modern one) have benefits? Yes. The question is, do you value them more than other things? One thing modern democracy brought is stability greater than any other system - because the masses can enjoy the feeling (illusion) that someone asks them for something and that they genuinely have a say. That provides extreme stability in a country, and stability is a prerequisite for many other good things you'd like to see in your country. Do people actually have a say? No, not really. And it would be foolish to run even your household, let alone a country, by whims of the masses that tend to change as often as wind direction. When you say "better than alternatives", it really depends on your definition of "better", as I said. For example, various autocratic systems are the government equivalent of high risk-high reward game. With bad people it is a disaster, with good people it provides growth and efficiency way beyond what any democracy could get you. Which is why companies are run like that and not democratically. Why would a tire maker in a car factory know and be given to decide the organization and moves of the company and have the equal say with everyone? He can't, which is why it is essential to have highly skilled top brass to make those decisions, without considering what 95% of the company think about it. Bad managers, and company is going down the drain, leaving countless people without a job, broke, miserable. Monarchies, as a form of autocratic rule, can't really be discussed without mentioning aristocracy, the elite, which are mandatory for any monarchy to actually run properly. It is much more complex system than "king and his buddies doing what they want". So on and so forth. There are poor democracies, there are prosperous democracies. There are poor monarchies, there are rich monarchies. There are so many variables and so many definitions of "good", that the whole discussion is the biggest time waster in modern political discussion, "Which system is better". For which culture? Where is it geographically? How big is it? What do we define as good? What and why we define as better than something else? The questions are endless. And when you answer them all, you realize that every single country is in a league of its own and can't really be compared to others, making the whole discussion "Which is better" pointless. It's like asking which flavor of ice cream tastes better than all the alternatives? I am sure there are folks who will foam at their mouth trying to convince everyone that there is one taste better than all of them, but, in reality, no.

As a Canadian who lived in Australia, I wished for a preferential ballot. All my Australian friends wanted something simpler, like first-past-the-post. And that voting should be optional, since anybody who isn't paying attention shouldn't have a say in how a nation is run.

@casbot71
@casbot71 4 ай бұрын
As an Australian it's a really interesting topic that I've posted about on some of the American and British political channels I subscribe to - I'm a bit of a political junkie and Australian politics got a lot less interesting once we stopped knifing PM'S as a national sport. But by luck (and possibly by coming to the game so late that the system had the advantage of previous examples), Australia has one of the best models for determining elections in the world. Some of the highlights. Compulsory voting with automatic enrolment at 18 years of age - it forces the major parties to play to the mainstream instead of a highly motivated fringe [ahem ... MAGA]. Preferential ranked choice voting - you number your ballot with your 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd, up to at least 6. So, if you want to vote for a minor party, it's not a wasted vote, even if they don't win you can put which of the major parties you prefer somewhere on the list. It does give small niche parties a chance and means that other parties on your side of the political fence aren't just spoilers for your party - they're allies. [Preference swap deals are a thing]. That also means that the mainstream parties can kick out their extremist and let them form their own party without worrying too much that they've just committed electoral suicide. You don't lose your right to vote if you've been to jail (Except for a really long sentence), so ethnic groups that get targeted by the police don't become disenfranchised (ahem, USA). Imagine Britain or America under such a system. It's the only reason Australia has relatively sane governments. If we had the American system, for example, we'd be like Florida or Alabama. And if American had Australia's system, the rest of the Western world wouldn't be looking on at the Yanks in apprehension at the insanity of their domestic politics.

Historians like reviewing primary sources about events in the past. This seems to me to be the sort of primary source they'd love to get their hands on when reviewing the Russo-Ukrainain Wars. Of course, there would be many others as well. EDIT: I should have clarified that I meant "primary source" is the historical context. To a historian, every source from the time period, and in some cases, even soon after, counts as a primary source. Of course, some are better than others - expert opinions are more valuable than those of normies, eyewitness reports are more valuable than second-hand sources. Perun would be a non-eyewitness expert primary source to them. The whole historical method involves sifting through primary sources according to these metrics while also trying to sort out biases. It's not easy, as many sources simply do not survive given enough time.

@@occamraiserI mean basically - some electoral systems (like the US one) encourage political polarization because of the Zero sum game dynamics - if you, as a politician, attack your opponent and you bring both you and them down but them down more, you've gained an advantage. You can elevate yourself but that's harder - you have to an effective communicator, and the aspirations / hopes of people are more diverse and tenuous than the fears of people, so it's easier to appeal to fears. Thus it's generally easier to campaign on a negative, polarizing platform than anything else.

One of the biggest things is compulsory turning up to the voting site. People call it compulsory voting but you can just write nothing on your ballot. It means if people get disgusted with the current politicians they still have to turn up and might choose someone new, with preferences that allows them to show their displeasure. In America those people just don’t vote and the die hards make up more and more of the voters.

Thank you so much for mentioning Czech Republic as one of the staunchest supporters! I´m Czech and we´re No. 1 when it comes to percentage of heavy weaponry stock given to Ukraine, but it rarely gets mentioned. Our government offers tax cuts to people who donate to buy weapons for Ukraine. And we have a huge tradition of donating to charity, which includes Ukraine. In December 2023 only, we collected 60 million Czech crowns for drones, vehicles, first aid kits and a helicopter. And we have a large community of people who give their last money to Ukraine, who transport aid in their vans in their free time. EDIT: Not saying this to boast and say "Czechia can´t do more". More like... it´s *incredibly frustrating* when your country is helping and your community is working their a**es off to help, but the news is basically "Europe is doing nothing". It makes Ukrainians sad. I know what it´s like to feel like nobody supports you (on an individual level), so I don´t want Ukrainians to feel like that.

It would not be an understatement to say that you and your content have changed the course of my academic career. As of the outbreak of the war in Ukraine I was doing a joint honours degree in War studies and History, in my first year. Your content has very specifically kindled a fascination with the economics of warfare and practically decided for me that I was going to do my dissertation on failed joint development projects. Currently in no small part due to you I am knee deep in an essay about the effects of demobilisation and incorrect assumptions about the early cold War, and how they merged painfully with budgetary constrains in the lead up to the Korean war. You continue to be an inspiration and to uphold some of the highest standards I've seen on this website, so I'll simply say this; Long live Perun! Long may he reign!

Perun going mostly unscripted is a gigachad moment showing how well thought out his content is. Entertainment or not, Perun has a neat way of cultivating a culture of introspection and reflection, something that is far too sparse in today's kneejerk media stream. It's a really humble acceptance of the fact that the picture will always be far too big for anyone to understand that I always love, consciously constraining the scope of discussions to allow for reasonable conclusions is just... neat. I'm grateful for Perun's videos and hope they'll continue into 2024 (except if burnout sets in; in that case you have my vote to step back and take care of yourself :3)

I think this channel is more important than you realise. The Internet is very noisy these days with people trying to 'contest the information space', mostly with bullshit, to the point that people have almost given up on the Internet as a source of information about international affairs. There is something about the way you present that is very 'someone very knowledgeable with a craptonne of information and analysis about a very complex topic trying to condense it all down to a 1 hour timeslot' and not 'someone trying to manipulate opinions and feelings about a topic using tactics to capture attention span and manipulate the algorithm ' that is a real breath of fresh air. As someone who fits the 35+ demographic - and who became dissatisfied (if not mistrustful) of legacy media coverage of conflict zones long ago - I have to say that Perun's uploads have become a regular Sunday morning appointment for me, absolutely essential. I don't mind the ppt style; frankly, I treat it as a podcast and keep KZbin as an open tab while I'm multitasking (usually gaming with the sound off, tbh). He's engaging even without pictures.

I felt a surprisingly strong sense of relief when Perun revealed that, yes, he puts on similar (albeit more detailed and complex) PowerPoint Presentations like these he gives us in his professional life. I guess I've been more worried than I'd thought that the people in gov and industry were not receiving good enough information or anslysis on the most important and impactful conflicts of our time. I apparently have not only been disappointed in my gov's response (the US), in speed, attention, and intensity to Russia's brutal, nearly Medieval, invasion and occupation of Ukraine, but also quite worried that all these experts in gov (military, economics, and diplomacy) might not actually know what they're doing! 😳 There have been several significant developments in this war that I was able to predict in surprising accuracy and detail that seemed to be totally missed or ignored by those whose job it is to predict (and prevent!) these things... ...and as you may have guessed, I'm just some rando idiot on the internet! So, this has been a scary time. I know every time someone does a deep-dive analysis into what's going wrong and right with our military, no matter the conclusion, it always includes something to the effect of "Well, yes, despite these problems, the US military could feasibly wage at least 2 geographically opposite fronts in a World War at the same time with money and kit left over to secure the Middle." But from what I've seen with our slow, hesitant, seemingly eternal deliberations for every little thermal optical system we send Ukraine (when honestly, just chucking thousands of Bradleys across the Atlantic might be sufficient), I have lost a great deal of confidence in how much our military even really _could_ feasibly handle if it ever came to that. And it looks like our enemies all across the world have also gotten the same impression I have (mistaken or no) and are acting out in very predictable, potentially terrible, destructive ways. Anyway, watching Perun all this time during the war in Ukraine, I've seen how logistics does take time to set up and get right and move seemlessly and continously, so I really hope the big hold-up is in that area, and that once we ciear a few of those hurdles and set Ukraine up solid, we'll see the advances we all know the very brave, creative, compassionate, and intelligent Ukrainian heroes are ready to make. Anyway, all this is to say, thank you, Perun! I'm so relieved you do this (but better!) in your day job! And, of course, Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦

But on a positive side what I can confirm with confidence is that the Palachinke are GOATED with not a single variety of crepe or pancake standing in the way. If you had to pick one filling... Condensed milk, apricot jam, blackberry jam, hazelnut spread or strawberry/raspberry?

Dear Perun, Your videos have been a great joy, despite the often grim topics. You manage to combine hard data, simple explanations and hilarious jokes into easy to digest and understand information, and you always back yourself up with good, reliable sources. I wish there were a lot more people like you, and i honestly say, i look forward to every sunday due to your videos! PS: I absolutly get your concern about YT's "policy", but a video about how voting systems work (or don't work) , yeah that could really really be a big banger mate.

Channels like yours, which are rare and far between, are amazing. It is like one of those rare BBC shows I'd watch as a kid in my local "education" channel that just translated all the good BBC and discovery stuff. It's like that good encyclopedia you'd have at the library or your school. It's like that one really good lecturer, or really good history book. Very few have managed the amazing feat of balancing simplicity/accessibility with accuracy/complexity and for that, I thank you so much for HOURS of entertainment. Anyway, Dominions 6 playthrough when it comes out in a week or so?
