@damien j Under socialism, there is still work, but workers would have democratic control of where the fruits of their labor go. This would grant us more benefits as workers and more pride in our work, rather than someone making a profit off someone else's labor without their say. The only reason we have the smartphone technology we have now is through US govt subsidized projects, and are currently made from overexploited outsourced labor. I would rather have my smartphone without the blood and sweat of a factory worker getting paid an incredibly small fraction of what theyre worth. If smartphones were to exist and be manufactured under socialism, there would be no need for competition because the innovation would be for the use of the product, not stifled by the profit motive, which creates phones that are built to break.
@xyzsame40813 жыл бұрын
@damien j you are wrong on the facts. I recommend the video:_ Capitalism did not create the IPhone you iMBecile_ Channtel _Current Affairs_ - interesting and enteraining. _Capitalism is RISK AVERSE._ Even if the risk is only reduced profits. The U.S. government subsidized a LOT of the basic research and early developments, we would not have electronics, computers, solar panels, many medications or most vaccines. The companies would never have gotten to the point where they take something interesting over and then continue with the foundation someone else laid (and covered all the inevitable losses). They cherry pick. - And they only do that when the project is so advanced that they are fairly sure it will be profitable. Incl. the vaccine now: The free market OR capitalism (that is not the same, Capitalism strives to eliminate the free market, because it allows for higher profits) did not provide those vaccines either (or those of the past). They always got handsomely paid to develop them. And for the actual work you need researchers and engineers not managers or shareholder or entrepreneurs. Russia, China, and Cuba developed the vaccines with the help of agencies. The for profit companies do not risk ANY investements, until they are fairly certain they can recoup it. Same with the high way system (in all of the country) and w/o that no major car industry. The same with electrification in rural areas (1930s) or now broadband in rural areas. For profits are not interested in all of that, they would ONLY serve the consumers in densely populated areas - and then exploit their natural monoply. Capitalism is risk averse (it could cost profit, even bankrupt a company). Avoiding bankrupcy is understandable, but even more modest investements are not made if if would slightly reduce profits (be it for innovation, but we also see that regarding worker's safety or the environment). That built in AVERSION to ANY risk for a MAXIMUM profit stands in the way of INNOVATION. They will reiterate the internal combustion machine (100 year old tech), but not develop anything new on their own. Tesla BUILDS on subsidized tech (solar panels, electronics in general) and on top of that they of course asked for - and got a lot of subsidies. And that depended on one rich man who likes to create things more than the zeros and digits on his accounts. I have my issues with a lot Elon Musk says or does - but he deserves credit for being a CREATOR. But those are RARE. He really risked some of his wealth instead of putting money into the big casino (Wallstreet). But one out of 100 or 200 super rich folks having the mindset of an innovator is not enough.

In the days before he was killed, JFK was having secret contacts with Fidel Castro via French journalist Jean Daniel. The contacts had to be secret because JFK knew there was strong opposition to him opting for peaceful coexistence with Cuba and the Soviet Union. JFK said "The US can coexist with a nation in its hemisphere that espouses a different economic system. It is the subservient relationship with the Soviet Union that creates the problem." In return for Cuba ending its connections with the Soviet Union, JFK was going to end the US embargo on Cuba. Castro agreed and he told the reporter, "He has the possibility of being the greatest president of the US." On November 22nd, Castro and Daniel met for lunch. There they heard the news that JFK had been assassinated. Castro repeated over and over "Es una mala noticia" "This is bad news. Your mission of peace has ended." JFK was the last US president to oppose the military/industrial complex. and US-funded coups to topple elected presidents. Opting for peaceful coexistence with the USSR and ordering the withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam got JFK killed by the military-industrial complex which controls the US. LBJ reversed the order, four days after the assassination.

Indeed Cuba has done an incredible job despite all the cogs in the spokes placed by the US government for 60 years. However, one must remember that socialism in one country can be a painful reality and socialism in one island next the the most savage and depraved empire in history, is a serious existential problem. @@njm3211 1 million Cubans fled to the U.S., most of them are in Florida. so that is quite a voting block. Later working class (non white) people also fled. There was an incident at an embassy and it pissed off Castro and the Cuban guards were removed. That was a mistake ;). Some Cubans realized they could walk into the embassy - and they did asking for asylum. As that was a Western country - France - they helped the U.S. in the propaganda war and therefor did not hinder the asylum seekers / economic migrants. Then thousands of people showed up to ask for asylum. That was embarrassing. To be fair, with less outside pressure, Cuba would do better and they might also be more liberal on free speech and freedom of the press. Anyway at least Castro let them leave after denouncing them as vermin (or something like that). And they also added mentally ill people and criminals to the mix - so the snobby with Cuban community in Florida was tasked with intergrating those people ;) The first wave may still be furious - some lost all their riches and had to start from the bottom when they had fine houses with servants on the island. But a white looking educated person could work their way up in the 1960s, and 1970s. Their children might vote Republican what they are not so rabid as the pissed off parents. And those that came later are working class - which means they likely still have relatives on the island and are not as selfish. They did not leave so much wealth behind and one can hope were able to work their way up into lower middle class (at least). Also thanks to the education and normally they grew up eating healthy food. So fewer medical bills in general. Even many Cuban Americans that are negative about Castro are for ending the sanctions (polling - a majority). In 2016 they brought up old statments of Sanders about Castro that were mildy positive (or not negative), that was amplified by mainstream media and of course meant to help HRC win. She did win the state, but Sanders did better in the age group till 40. The rich / older Cuban Americans do not vote Democrat anyway. The first and second wave were rich people and professionals, they should do well (and we can expect them to vote Republican). I think Wolff is too euphemistic about the regime. I respect their achievements under difficult circumstances BUT: any leader that is capable to prevail under such conditions is most likely ruthless (to a degree). The rich do not give an inch and fiercly fight back - so only militarily skilled revolutionaries that are good leaders and have a lot of ambition or are very driven will even have a (slim) chance. So if the revolution is not crushed, more often than not the new regime has a dictatorial streak. Castro incarcerated a lot of former supporters (comrades). People that were more moderate. he made a lot of enemies when they dispossessed all business owners. They should have left them. If they were really rich make them pay taxes or cut off a part of their wealth, or they have to partner up with a cooperative. That was foolish and more - it was a power grab. The desire to micromanage the economy top down. And also agriculture. In the 1990s they did not get machines, spare parts, fuel and imported food for cheap anymore - after the Soviet Union dissolved. Cubans lost a lot of weight during that time. The government showed some wisdom (finally !) They encouraged small farms and urban farms to produce organic food (it needs no artificial fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides). These units are privately owned or they are cooperatives. But if they make a profit they can keep it. So they do not have to import. They invented ways to deal with sandy soils (slightly raised beds, sides made from roofing material, corrugated boards, likely concrete with some fibres, so they do not need wood). Check out Cuban style farming, or their kind of signature raised beds (people in Florida imitate that meanwhile). The government also let those experiments be accompagnied by universities. To have a systematic approach what works under what circumstances and why. Their honey bees are THRIVING - unlike in most parts of the world. Pesticides are not completely banned but are scarce / expensive and may need special permission. Meanwhile a lot of people make money as beekeepers so they are eager to keep pesticide use down. I assume they still have tobacco and sugar monocultures, they will not let a whole harvest go under if they are attacked by a pest, but they do a lot to promote the natural predators, and have NOW many smaller farms and homestead with a diverse plant system, that produce food for humans under de facto organic standards. The Cubans get excellent organic food, but it is limited and tends toward vegetarian or even vegan. Vegetables fruit, sugar, rice. Meat is expensive (it takes a lot of land to produce). Their meat would be organic quality. Also milk and wheat have to be imported. They have rice (which grows well in their climate, they are self sufficient), so they do not starve - but bread or wheat based pasta are luxuries. Cuban honey has become an important export product. They plant flowers that attract beneficial insects and pollinators, and do interplanting, and other organic practices. That even attracts some eco tourists. And they switched to using horses for carts and for ploughing (or oxens). They do not need spare parts, or fossil fuel.

Funny but many ranch farmers stories come from many places like the Owens Valley itself. The consequences of the stealing of water from ranchers in that valley exemplify and bring memories of Cuba . The dried Valley broke the farming work and productivity , the loss of many properties. The economic and environmental impact is still felt today. The stories of the Owens Valley and surrounding area up to lake Tahoe inspired many stories in the famous " bonanza" program. That stealing to move a complete river to the San Joaquin Valley to enrich the wealthy farmers of California. Until today that water still is going to even L.A. to mi understanding.

Most ordinary people need some incentives to better themselves and their livelihood, this is applicable in most human society and Cuba is no exception. Apart from the special period of the early 90s following the outside destruction of the USSR, Cuba seems to have been very much more stable than most capitalist nations, at least in terms of not having to forego crisis after crisis in which the lives of the working class are continuously uprooted and destroyed and left on their own. At least in Cuba they believe in social use of resources and industry to a point where they make sure everyone has a decent chance of partaking in the little resources and opportunities they do have. it would nice if you explained how Gringoland has trampled, commandeered and disabled the Puerto Rico economy since 1898 when it invaded Puerto Rico without any right to lord over Puerto Rico except its own hubris

I don't understand why the US continues to maintain a military base in Guantanamo Bay? Isn't that like a thorn in Cuba's side? 🤔

I’d love to see a POTUS say to Cuba, build business law around good and worker democracy in exchange for all sanctions dropped. Let’s see what they do.

Kind of silly of him to compare the COVID crisis in Cuba to the United States. First of all, many of the people in Cuba do not have the luxury of travel as they do in the United States. How other wise could the COVID crisis have started really from travel. Yes there are people who travel to Cuba, but how many Cubans go on any trips out of the country. Wolff would have more credibility for me if he were not such a cheer leader for communist nations, present and past.

Well, if Cuba is doing better than America during this pandemic, that is a perfrect reason to increase sanctions.

Most people in cuba live under poverty! That’s not what socialism is about. Also prof. Wolff can you be more specific about US embargo and the results of it?

A math mistake Professor. You said that the US population is 11 times that of Cuba. It's more like 30X. I suspect the '11' number came from Cuba's population of 11 million?

He said 30x right before that, 😅, probably just an accident

Now is the time for the US to extend and practice Détente with all of the nations of the world and eliminate the veto rule of the United Nations and the filibuster rule of the Senate and lead by example to encourage all countries of the world to become democratically run. This new policy will free up money to start competing with China and other emerging nations in infrastructure, education, health care, and start the process of correcting our shortcomings in human rights.
