I love your Ask The Breeder videos. Your commitment to sharing your knowledge and experience is a valuable and meaningful gift. Aren't we fortunate to have the technology to teach and learn this way? I subscribed when I first started looking for a Cavalier puppy. I am still looking for him, but in the meantime, have learned so much. Yes, I will spread the word about chaskat35 to potentially interested viewers in honor of your sweet Watson. It will be my pleasure.

That Teddy was a big beautiful boy. I knew he would find a good home. Thank you Charlie for your videos. I've been watching for a couple of years now and must say that while I can't get enough of Apple, I enjoy watching you too.

Beautiful dogs. Bootsie is far too young to be a grandma.

Ask the Breeder Question: What should I look for when I choose a puppy? I would like to get a good family dog that is friendly, playful, confident, and will do well with kids (9 and 12). I'm not looking for a show dog or breeding dog. Will a breeder usually choose the puppy or does the family choose the puppy? Thank you! I love the videos of your doggos!

Thank you for answering my question. I am late in watching due to having a flood in the home which needed all my attention. You are a great You Tuber as are your canine pals

My little girl is a Ruby Cavalier. She is 8 months old. She has a mind of her own! But so very sweet. Your videos have been so inlighting, thank you. Ok, my question is, I have been having issues with her having bought of diarrhea. She goes along fine for about 7 to 10 days and then. I can't contribute it to any one thing. She seems to chew on carpets, rugs, she is a chewers! I can brush her teeth easily because I am always digging something out of her mouth. She is very smart and sensitive. I am puzzled by this, I have changed food, diet, treats. I am not sure why this continues. Have you ever experienced this?
@chaskat3523 күн бұрын
Keep in mind that, at 8 months of age, she is probably at her final stage of skeletal development, and her dietary needs decrease DRASTICALLY at this point. Normally, I'd be feeding a 6 month old nearly a cup of puppy food twice a day, but before they get to a year old, I would feed just 3/4 cup of adult food once a day. If the switch to adult food and a smaller amount doesn't stop the diarrhea, you might try adding a small amount of fiber-rich supplement to her dinner. Canned pumpkin (unsweetened) is good, as is a small piece of the breakfast cereal Weetabix soaked in a bit of water or goat's milk. If all efforts fail, see your vet for a mild antibiotic like Metronidazole, which usually does the trick. As far as the chewing is concerned, that's pretty normal, and it will take some vigilance on your part to avoid damage to your home. Have some chew toys (both soft and hard) available that she likes, and as soon as you see any movement toward chewing on the rug, immediately substitute the chew toy and move her away from the rug she started chewing on. Puppies will always want to chew, so substitution is the best way to channel this behavior into something acceptable.

Will you breed Apple again given the challenges she and the pups had?
@chaskat3517 күн бұрын
That's something to be decided down the line, but this problem doesn't necessarily rule it out.

For future ATB: 1- Do you have pet insurance for your dogs? My first cav Henry had a 10k ear surgery and I got 90% back. He was also on seizure meds, which were covered. New boy Morris has grade 3 murmur and ekg's are covered. 2- can you do an episode on dental care? Morris just had a $2k dental 😬 with lots of extractions. Wasn't covered by insurance.

I already did a video on dental care: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6WxinmJi9ydr6c Thanks for the idea on insurance.

How much does luck play into confirmation? Also how do you decide when or if to retire a dog from breeding? Thank you.
@chaskat3520 күн бұрын
With a good judge, your dog has to be at his best on the day of the show, and the judge will be able to discern whether or not your dog conforms more closely to the breed standard than all the others. Of course, there are various reasons to believe that a judge's picks are not good, such as their limited experience with and knowledge of the breed, poor show venue conditions, friendship or political connections with a handler, or outside conditions that cause your dog to be off his game on the day. Your other question is a bit more complex, and I'll take it up on Ask The Breeder.
@Kentucky91420 күн бұрын
@@chaskat35 Oops. I don’t think I was clear when I asked my question about confirmation. I meant how do you choose the two dogs to breed? What do you look for in possible parents or is it the luck of the draw as to what the puppies bring to the table for showing? Your judging comments are fascinating! Thank you.

The breeder - that's the person who owns the female - is the one who looks for a suitable sire. Given a female that has lots of good qualities, they evaluate what needs improvement (that will always be possible, because there is no such thing as a perfect dog). The task is then to find a stud that is correct in most or all of those aspects. He should of course still be acceptable in the other good qualities that the female has, so that we don't lose those. It's usually very helpful to see what the potential stud has produced, to make sure those characteristics are passed on. That's a huge oversimplification, but it's the general outline of what we have to do if we want to preserve the best of our breed.

Any chance you can post a link to watch it live . I have watch friends live in the past but i forget how ? Wishing Jamba the very best of luck!! You sure could use a win!
@chaskat3526 күн бұрын
They say that they are live streaming the breed competitions on the Fox Sports app, but I have no experience with that. There are lots of breeds competing at the same time in various rings, and I don't know if they will have each breed on a separate stream, or just show highlights.
