In my 2004 house, all the outlets with broken tab for switch operation are upside down, while all the other outlets are right side up. I thought that was an interesting thing to quickly know which outlets in bedroom are switch operated

My dad was a plumber mostly specializing in water treatment and looked a lot like Richard but with big glasses. Unfortunately he passed away 11 years ago at the age of 62.

How much would it take to really fix the porch column and the smart thermostat?

Many high-tech thermostats are overly dependent on apps and remote servers. Be obsolete in several years. Imagine one's HVAC system being taken over by hackers. Or controlled by the utility.

Hmm. Carpenter ant nest in column. Spray before sealing it back up. I guess the drain hole through the new base will let any moisture that finds its way into the column escape.

My spilt level entry home has at the top of the stairs 6 switches (!) but one of them truly doesn't seem to go anywhere 😂. Understanding switched receptacle wiring, I tried my tester in every upper and lower outlet position around that entire part of the house. Maybe that's the issue, the outlet to which it powers was never made "switched". I wonder if simply turning off the power and then checking each outlet wiring to find a powered "neutral" wire would find to where it goes??

7:44 I bought two of the Honeywell top of the line color thermostats shown at the far right on the board directly from my power provider for $35 each, which was a savings of over $200 per thermostat. Everyone should see if their power company offers similar discount programs.
