I think the question "Should women serve national service" is a really interesting topic to talk about. Objectively speaking, if the males have a national obligation to serve the nation, there should be an appropriate and equal 'obligation' for the ladies (if we're all for equality here). Now before you start and go on a witch hunt to cancel me, it does NOT have to be all out in the jungle, carrying a heavy field pack or marching under the hot sun because I do recognize that men and women are very different biologically. Rather, there should be an option open for the ladies to decide if they would like to serve in non-combative (healthcare - EMT medics, nurses/ parachute riggers/ clerical work/ army intelligence etc - suggestions as provided by the ladies in the video and I'm really happy that they mentioned that!) roles but of course, the option to serve in a combat role should remain open if they so choose to do so. This would render the "I am not as strong as the guys" argument invalid, isn't it? After all, even the guys with medically diagnosed physical issues do still have to serve and complete their 2 years albeit in a different capacity because everyone should contribute in their own way towards total defence. This (women for mandatory NS) is probably really controversial because the status quo has been in place for as long as we have had our independence and a change to that would likely incite more outcry than support. In my personal opinion, if we were to progress as a society towards greater equality, (wage gap issues, etc) then we should not cherry-pick issues but rather be open to addressing all (the good and the bad) that comes with it. Do reply to the comment if you wish to present an alternative view or find that any points I have raised to be flawed because it is always nice to hear a different pov. But do keep it civil and objective.

@renaawq87424 жыл бұрын
And I also agree that it's controversial, and incites more outcry than support. These fast few hours of looking at replies went too personal too quick and I'm not sure that their intentions are aligned with mine - to educate and improve, being open to a topic and not cherry picking on things. All the attacks, assumptions and twisting my words... I hope it doesn't happen here. I think people would be too afraid to voice out after seeing what happened to me in 1 or 2 threads 😭

I think she just meant that if a girl has a long time friend and both of them are attracted to eachother, then they would of done something instead of going and dating different people. Regarding the NS question, I agree men and women are not equal; we have our own advantages as well as our own problems specific to our gender that we have to deal with. To say that we are completely equal is to discount all the amazing things women can do that men simply can't (and ofcourse vice versa). That being said we all strive for equal opportunity, rights and responsibility. BUT Equality does not mean being equal to men only when it benefits you! Every reason you mentioned is not gender specific (you think guys want to get bitten by snakes or like shitting in the jungle???). You girls are using your gender as a reason to not take on the responsibility of protecting our nation (which I take pride in). This is blatant hypocrisy in the face of the equality argument. Renae is very clear in her stance that she doesn't want to do it because she is a woman. By her logic, for example, if women were paid 30% of what men get paid for doing the same job the solution would be to... if man complaining about it: give your money to a women if woman complaining about it: ask your brother or dad for money Doesn't fix the situation at all. I agree with Leah that it may not be at the same standard but I disagree when you brought up the lack of wanting retrospective action on changing the rules/law and the reasoning behind it. There was once a time when women did not have the right to vote. It was this way for a very long time. I'm sure you're glad we changed that right. Again it comes down to whether it suits you and equality is not being equal only when it benefits you. I don't want to generalize and I don't think every girl feels the same way as y'all but I do hope not all girls share this hypocritical view (especially Renae)
@DINGTONGDING4 жыл бұрын

There are so many guys who are obviously not cut out for the army life but are still forced to serve. I think saying that girls should not serve simply because of their gender is misogynistic and sexist. If the concern is about biological differences there are always other areas like nursing.
@prn_Melatonin4 жыл бұрын
I actually posted a reply saying how girls can benefit the country by serving and it got deleted. They just want to abuse their privilege and say stupid shit like "ask your mom to serve ns". They want people to defend their country but play no active part in doing so.
@renaawq87424 жыл бұрын
Yo just my opinion but I feel like army is just a fraction of what women go through, especially for things like childbirth. It kinda makes sense when you think about it. Not saying all women go through childbirth but not necessarily all men perceive NS as a forceful service. Also, there are also women out there who serve the army, just that it's not compulsory for all.

exactly! why do guys have to sacrifice 2 years of their life when women are also part of this nation? Moreover, we still have to be tormented by reservists every year until we finish the 10 cycles or reach 40 years old. It is only right that men are being compensated in one way or another for all these sacrifices we make. I hate it so much when women start fighting for women rights such as equal pay and all in Singapore. Like women here already have many advantages over men.
