Nayakan is a 1987 Indian Tamil-language gangster film written and directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan. It is loosely based on the real-life Bombay underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar, and sympathetically depicts the struggle of South Indians living in Bombay (now Mumbai). The film also stars Saranya Ponvannan in her film debut. Karthika, Nassar, Janagaraj, Delhi Ganesh and Tinnu Anand play significant roles. The soundtrack and the background score of the film, composed by Ilaiyaraaja were critically acclaimed and considered by critics as one of his best works to that point

I saw this move recently it really showed me why kamal Hassan is a true talent. especially for this film it’s not only a gangster film. but it’s about a man who goes by living with a certain code of morality and ethics. and how he punish the people who abuse the poor and is seen as a form of law and Justice it’s such a great film.

Character themes were done by RD BURMAN in films like aradhana and sholay before ilaiyaraaja. Ilaiyaraaja introduced it to tamil films maybe though. That being said, nayakan has some of the best music ever produced

When Mani sir has Revathy's childhood pics arranged on a mat as her room decor to Ilayaraja sir s haunting background score which drags me down the nostalgia lane to my school days... and Karthik who I was impressed only in this movie never before and never after and then Mohan, whom I couldn't fathom why he soooo famous (bad grammar) but I still loved him in every movie of his and then there is Revathy who spells fun, madness, free spiritedness and more. She gave many a girl an identity to grow up as a self-respecting woman very much capable of thinking for herself yet being so traditional... A 43YO from Austin, TX :)

#AskBR 7G Rainbow Colony - 7G and Pudhupettai are the 2 of my favorite Selvaraghavan movie and I feel only in these two movies the director was able completely execute his vision on screen. While even 7G was about a hero stalking a girl, why was this still enjoyable versus similar movies now are detested pr condemned (rightly so). Was it because the hero gets reformed and responsible in the end? How does a movie tread this thin line between stalking and love and succeed?

BR - great analysis as usual. Though I love each and every performance of Kamal, but I think the way he expresses anger with his daughter is one of his best. What do you think?
