Sciatic pain can be caused by a few different things. These are my 5 favorite stretches for sciatica from a tight piriformis. See more piriformis syndrome stretches and exercises: • Piriformis Syndrome St...
The first sciatica stretch is a figure four stretch lying down. It is a great stretch for the piriformis muscle, and you can modify it if needed.
The next stretch is a knee to opposite shoulder stretch. This stretches the piriformis in a slightly different way, so it might feel more comfortable than the figure four.
Then there is the trunk rotation in long sitting. This not only stretches your piriformis muscle, but it also stretches your trunk and low back, so if you are having some pain there too, it might be a good one for you.
Now you will do a modified pigeon stretch. Sometimes the pigeon stretch is too difficult for people to get in that position. This one slightly changes the tension, and makes it a little easier to get into.
The last stretch is a seated figure four stretch. This is great if you don’t have time or the place to lie down on the floor. It’s also a great alternative for people who have a hard time getting off the floor.

AskDoctorJo I have been having lower back/hip/buttocks pain from sciatica. A doctor recommended your videos and suggested I try strengthening core. Which of your videos do you suggest I start with? Core, sciatic, hip, they all seem like they would be helpful.

AskDoctorJo I have been having pain in my lower back on the right side that travels to the right upper front side of my right thigh. The muscle on that side of my thigh is visibly larger than on the left side. It burns so much when I go any distance that I am afraid to walk too far from my house. I have seen a physical therapist but nothing has changed. Help please.

Can't honestly thank you enough. It's 3:30am here in England and woke up at 2am with horrible pain. Nothing has ever taken the pressure off like this and I'm about to go back to sleep. Thank you!

I'm watching right now as well Ola and it's 2:56 am. It's certainly helped relieve the pain for me today. I'm hoping by doing exercises right before bed will help ease the pain in the morning when I wake, which for me, is the absolute worst pain of the my day. Thanks Doc!

Natasha Jones I have the same issue getting up in am is the absolute worst, have to square myself, hobble to kitchen to take painkiller then I can do couple things physiotherapist gave me to do. I have right side entire leg into foot tingling too. Ache is debilitating. Have had for too long.

The problem is that the therapist know how to solve the problem in just few time, but since it's their business they want to earn as much money ask they can with each patient... this the cruel reality😢

I am now currently in this situation, I already had this suffering for more than a week.. it is very painful.. I cannot walk properly I cannot do my work properly.. I took a massage theraphy but it didn't work.. it still painful.. I have to try this routine until my pain relief thank you for the guide doc🙏 God bless

Does a tight piriformis cause duck feet? I see so many ppl walk with their right foot turned out. Mine is starting to a lot. Also. Why is it always the right foot?

Sweetheart make sure you keep at it and keep it stretched I am 60 years old and have not been able to walk normally for over 6 months from this horrible pain. A lot of it comes from sitting too much. So happy that you found the relief I'm going to try it also!

I'm glad you're feeling better, Jonathan. But know that you might have piriformis pain for a long, long time. Just make the stretching exercises part of your daily routine, and you should be pain free (from someone who knows).

Each stretch hurts my right leg when I’m doing it. Like the pain is in my right hip and it just travels down my leg. What stretches should I do so it won’t hurt ?

I have lost all my weight, muscle mass and fat which has increased the amount of pain I feel in my back to my legs. This doesn’t loosen the tightness in my butt (yet) but I can feel the stretch. It’s been so painful for the past 8 months and I wondered why I was not getting relief from massage 😩thank you for this. I will save and continue these exercises daily. Hopefully the tightness will go away.

Hi!! I have a similar story. I've lost muscle mass in my right glute and part of my lower back, I feel pain in lower back, butt, and some localized pains in my leg, ankle and even in the sole of the foot. I've been dealing with this since June 2022 and of course like in your case the tightness in the butt is really annoying. Some days I feel like everything is ok, but most of the days are bad.

I was diagnosed with Piriformis Syndrome a few weeks ago.. It’s so bad I’m now in a wheel chair because I cannot bare any weight on my affected leg. My doctor has me on Steroids (Prednisone) right now which is definitely helping, and I’m starting Physical Therapy next week.. But I’m DESPERATE to try anything that will help me!! I’m 28 and I have a 2 year old son and he’s been so upset and acting out bcus he hates seeing mommy in pain and that I can’t run around and play with him anymore… It makes me wanna cry just writing this.. I’m so desperate to be mobile again, I havnt walked in 3 weeks and I cannot wait for the day I can walk and run around with my son again! So I will DEFINITELY be trying these stretches starting today!! I Pray that this helps to give me some relief!!

Hi dr Jo, i'm from Indonesia I think i have sciatic pain, it's been 1 month It's really painful when i'm sitting down for the certain time especially during wfh. I can't check my self to neurologist because they are in hospital, and it's not a safe place for me during this pandemic. Is this exercise same with physiotheraphy? Hlo Dr. Jo I HV these same symptoms Full of my left side of the body from hip to thigh and sometimes full leg and even I get back pain and shoulder pain little down of the shoulder , these all symptoms have only to the left side of the body. But I really don't know what's this and how to come out of this pain. By watching some same symptoms of videos I got to know little. I have not yet consulted the doctor. I mostly get this pain by standing or sitting or sleeping really feel horrible that time and I don't understand what to do. Can you please suggest me what should I do and which will be helpful.

I was in so much pain this morning. I did all these stretches for 30 seconds, three times on each side. I felt so much better afterwards. The pain is gone. Thank you so much Dr. Joe. I can now focus on my other daily activities.

Thanks again for such a great video!!! Is there some exercise that makes this muscle strong, or these stretches on a daily basis, make the piriformis loose? Also what role does gas play, i passed it out 3 or 4 times, doing these exercises and it subsided the pain as well!

This is useful!! I am suffering from a year and till now it’s so painful it doesn’t have a medical treatment just a pain killer help for a certain time only !!! Only massage and exercise help for this pain this pain is mild to moderated !!! Just love this video and plz tell me how many time we should do this in a day?

Thank you doc for this video, it helps me so much with the pain! I've had this pain for 5 years, and just realised it's a kind of syndrome. My parents keeps on dismissing my complains about the pain as a mere sore muscles, only last week they allowed me to go to therapy. The therapist told me about this syndrome, and here I am, learning about these streches to ease the pain while waiting for my weekly therapy session💜

I have been doing stretches for that muscles but wasn't sure if I was doing it right. Went to get a massage for the first time today and the masseuse text me this video. She said this was one that she felt like it fully demonstrated the moves to get relief.

I'm having inner and outer thigh pain groin pain - and outer thigh pain. Also buttocks pain when walking a hill. When I cross my leg it doesn't want to un cross. I have a number of issues from connective tissue issues. 😭 It hurts my groin doing number 2. I'm having to do full body strengthening.

Dr Jo how often should I do these exercises daily? I sit behind computer 5 days a week 8 hrs a day and I have severe pain in pelvic bones, down into buttocks continuing in right leg into foot with numbness in right leg and on occasion lately in left leg. I am trying to stand when keying sometimes, do stretches while seated, I find your video with the 5 stretches very beneficial. When I have to get up in middle of night it’s awful the pain I have to endure as well when I 1st get up in the morning seems everything is locked as far as muscles are concerned, it’s excruciating pain to make it to kitchen for water for meds. Appreciate your response😊

Instant results!! I hurt myself at work lifting something heavy and twisting while bending down. My mobility hasn’t been the same since with deep pain mostly in left thigh. But I did these stretches for less than 15 mins and i felt much more normal than I have in a long time. I’m never ignoring stretching again thank you very much.

I had no idea my piriformis muscle was so tight. I have sacral joint disorder and to be comfortable I have to sit on air waffle cushions and sleep on air waffle mattress overlays. But lately I’ve gotten into a. Bad way where I have been getting spasming in my right buttock. I know know for sure that this is my piriformis muscle. I realized how tight it was when I did the figure four on the right side I could barely get that leg up but the left side went up no problem. So if I stretch this out every day morning and night should this keep the piriformis muscle in better shape. How long does it usually take to get it to calm down. I do notice my hips are at different heights which I know can affect sacral joint issues.my doc is considering having me fuse the sacral joints. Will this make the piraformis syndrome worse

I know this video is old so I don’t know if you’ll receive my message. But I’ve been dealing with this piriformis pain for months now and I have went to a chiropractor. But what seems to aggravate it the very most is any time I go for a walk it hurts so much the next day and it’s causing big knots in my calves the next day as well. Can you tell me why it’s doing this and if I should continue walking or not??

I have subscribed.. Thank you sooo.. much for putting up this video. I was suffering excruciating pain and could not even sit or stand without acute pain. After just 10mins of stretching i was able to sit stand 100 times without a single pinch in my sciatica. I still have that pain when i try to bend my upper body forward. I walk roughly 5 miles daily, but I start getting siactica problems on my right hip approximately half way through the walk. Do you have any quick stretches that I can do when I am outside? ( No, I don't want to stop half way through/ shorten the walk )

Dear Dr Joe THANK YOU!!!!!!! Yesterday i was in pain as usual for the past 2 years. In the evening i did the exercise to align my hips (my problem is on my left pirifomas). I was in too much pain to do anymore. In the middle of the night i did the induction exercise. The area popped...... I stood up & walked away pain free!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did the induction exercise will sitting on the toilet crossing my arms place my fists on each inner knee. I pushed out with my wrist & in with my knees. Maybe this can help someone else who is suffering from the same issue. 🧐💕👍🏾🥰🙏🏾😘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

AskDoctorJo they said there is a nerve compressed near the neck and surgery is a very risky option I am not in U.S I will manage to contact you for evaluation if that’s okay When I am back in U.S You videos helps a lot But Sometimes it’s confusing and If I end up doing the wrong stretch, than it brings the pain back

severe sciatic pain (back (stenosis) thigh, groin, knee and shin) x 2 months... no help with acupuncture or PT yet.... although massage of buttocks in area of piriformis helps me stand up straight for a while! (haven't stood straight up in these 2 months!) I'd like to do these exercises but embarrassed to say i can't bring my affected leg up high enough to cross my leg over. Anything else I can do? Thank you.

Been dealing with this for years, since I initially injured my leg working in a bakery. It got so bad my leg was dead weight by the end of my shift I couldn't walk on it without my left giving out. I had to quit the department for my current one (best choice EVER!) but now I am having issues again... I know this is what is going on and I'm sure my doctor will agree too when I describe this to him when I finally see him for it next month. I'm giving this a go and hopefully this might help a little bit! I'm only 23 and I don't want to end up not being able to walk at all when I hit 40!
