Interview with Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy, Valentine's Day 2014 at Webster Hall New York, NY. I've done my best to edit my voice out of the conversation, only leaving a few soundbites in for specific question prompts.
This dialogue was very dear to me, and its an absolute shame it was never published. Ogre was incredibly gracious with his time, attention, and honesty - and I sincerely hope and trust that it'll be appreciated here by his audience. As sole owner of this footage/audio I'm publishing the raw interview & b-roll concert footage per fan request.
00:00 - Intro
01:05 - Change, Hypocrisy and Acceptance
01:35 - CNN and Information Overload
02:45 - Personal Experience, Krishnamurti, and Perception
04:15 - On-stage assault (I made sure to cut out the attack itself, and obscure the assailant)
04:30 - Empathy informing Morality
05:10 - Animal Consciousness
06:35 - Gallows Laughter
07:25 - Nuclear Power
08:00 - Songwriting Process, The Concept of Weapon
08:55 - Personal Accountability
09:25 - Music as Torture & Military Industrial Complex
12:50 - Fan Responsibility
13:19 - Gitmo Press Association
16:14 - America's Global Responsibility, Post-9/11 Nationalism, Conspiracy
20:13 - Band Relationship with Album Concepts
21:45 - VX Gas Attack in renewed context, Middle East Conflict
23:20 - Heroin
24:27 - The Intent of Weapon as an album
25:17 - Greater Wrong of the Right's relation to Weapon, Terry Holdbrooks
28:00 - Skinny Puppy's role in society
29:15 - Misconceptions and Misrepresentations of Ogre, in his life
31:55 - Motivation

Great interview. Probably the best interview I saw about Ogre and Skinny Puppy. I am a fan of the SP of the 80s, and as a European and left-wing ideology, animal rights / human rights defender and environmentalist, Ogre's opinion is very close to me. I see him as a soul mate in many ways.

Agree. Very intelligent man. Interesting his comment about soldiers becoming immoral. It was DEFINITELY taking place in WWII and probably before. Go read the book "With the old breed". Its about a marine in the pacific and how inhumane both sides became. Torturing and mutilating the enemy. Americans and Japanese. That type of behavior has probably gone on forever when it comes to war. That book is very eye opening in to what the common soldier in the pacific went through.

You started the year I was born. I've never listened so intently and tried to understand what this meant. Listening to this has tears flowing down my face.. you are speaking so much of my life and what I dream and what I act upon. What i care about and speak on. If I could bring it to a singular expression. This is why I'm here. How could he possibly be pulling the words from me with such precision. How.... How

So interesting how Ogre speaks in lyrics. It must be exhausting to think this way. Sounds like a tortured life, but at the end of the day we create our own reality that we live in and it’s possible to be productive and support the common-good without spiraling down.

A true empaths words ❤ He makes me feel not as alone to be extremely empathetic, I know that there are millions of people that are the same its just sumtimes it does feel like a heavy burden and I understand exactly what he's saying. When things upset you in the world that you have no control over its horrible, like the state of the environment, injustices, abuse of any kind it weighs heavy upon the soul but Skinny Puppy makes my world a much better place and I'm greatful to have them in my life. Ogre and Key forever!!

Thank You Thank You Thank you! OhGr sez something to the effect of " I want to thank you because you sit there with a pen in your hand, and that pen is the real power", and he is right. The truth will Out. I do believe that in the world there is a greater critical mass of people who do listen to everything with their soul and with empathy who aren't totally ruled by greed, even though it is impossible to see sometimes. Ohgr is a hero because he keeps pushing up against the forces at work to divide and conquer. Just one question--why do you want your voice edited out? Your questions were very thought provoking i'm sure...did you ever publish this interview in another medium? Also, great footage. I wanted to see them on that tour sooooooo badly, but Tix sold out in the Bay Area very quickly. thanks for sharing this much! \m/ \m/

Im not sure what to take away from this, sure it’s not a debate but it seems like such a missed opportunity, Ogre just goes on about all this stuff and I’m sure the fanboy behind the mic ate it up but rather then just let someone rant, why not ask questions, like what do mean? What do you mean by that? What makes you say this? You’re not going to extrapolate anything but some ambiguous answers about whatever…

Samuel Skeen But on a serious serious note, solid journalism skills...this was a great interview. I'm constantly humbled by my ignorance - if that makes any sense! Especially in terms of government rule (or lack thereof) outside of America's system. Listening to this is an education and a reminder to seek WISDOM in these current days. I find myself overwhelmed by the rejection I'd face *attempting* to spread awareness in a sort of grassroots method via music/art/performance. Not necessarily in politics solely but more along the lines of the failing condition/poisoned mindset of community and humans. Are we ultimately doomed? Progressing technologically, yet emotionally stunted? I feel like there's an insidiously crippling "spirit" haunting us all until finally we break. Or snap. Whichever comes first!! Thank you for sharing this.

You know what sucks about the federal gov possibly using their music to torture Gitmo prisoners? All of the people they may have written about in songs now have had their identity and safety compromised to possibly a bunch of foreign terrorists… I’m guessing a lot of people might want reparations for that so I filed an fbi report since I may have been one of those people. Tell my dear friend Ogre to be safe if he goes to Portland or Seattle… it seems notice of some things may have reached my parents whom also got an fbi report for possible mob activity & might be dangerous. And tell him I love him. Anyhow if anyone else feels any songs were written about them, and their music was used for torture, file those fbi reports in case we can get a case. Meanwhile I’m setting the system on fire in other ways… cuz I’ve had it with the things my family may have done to so many, including possibly music artists, may have been affected by their actions. I’m currently waiting for the fbi & US marshals to come on some stuff I filed almost 2 years ago & so far they seem to have left me here to die, disabled and unable to walk now. It seems my life no matter how much music about me may have toured the world, hasn’t gotten the government’s attention yet, so I’m getting behind pissed so filed stuff in hopes victims can get reparations and people can be held accountable… if I live long enough.
