I think you only need the passport when flying to Canada other then that the border officer is right.

You need passport to cross back in US.

No ! Crossed to CAN last November. Stayed till mid March. No problem going and coming back to US.

If you fly to Canada yes. If you drive no I just used my Michigan Enhanced License and it was fine.
