In this video, I'm going to visit Asian grocery stores to talk to Asian parents about how they raise their kids. The statistics show that Asian children excel in academics, with the stereotype that we all become doctors, so I decided to figure out how Asian parents nowadays are raising their kids. We'll talk about their life before America, how they are currently raising their children, their parenting values, and how they feel about education and discipline.
This was actually a really scary video to make, but it ended up being super insightful. I even talked to my dad at the end of the video.

The interviews weren't easy and I was super nervous going up to people to ask them for an interview. Most people said no to the interview, and we even got kicked out of the original grocery store we were in, but in the end, it was all worth it. I'm super glad I got to hear so many interesting stories from different Asian parents about how they were raised, and how they are raising their kids. Compared to the old days, I think there's a lot of hope for this generation's Asian parents who care about raising their children to do what they want instead of imposing their dreams on them. If you're a new Asian parent, I encourage you to watch the whole video to learn from these parents' experiences and get valuable advice that could help you as you navigate parenthood.

Great video. Growing up with asian immigrant parents, I do wish we had more communication and open lines of communication. My parents were old school, didn't communicate a lot, didn't show affection to me or to each other. which really hindered my development. I'm 48y and have 2 adult kids, age 20 and 18. I did things completely opposite, gave lots of affection, hugs and words of encouragement to my kiddos growing up. There mom wasn't in the picture the last 5 years so I really had to step up my game. Couldn't be more happier where they are now. both in college, will graduate early with bachelors and debt free from college.

OMG. I would be so nervous going up to strangers and asking them about how they raise their kids. This is cool though. An immigrant’s perspective would be different from a first gen American, especially when they’ve struggled to come to the country. And most of us tend to view education as the only way out of poverty. Even though most people say would support their child’s dream their soul is screaming “I want her to become a doctor or a lawyer 😂”

You have an AMAZING Dad!! His comment on the Piano lessons brought tears to my eyes!! I think about all the investments my parents made on my extracurricular activities and I sometimes feel they could have did so much with it!! Your father’s response brought comfort to me because I feel my parents have the same outlook. I just never brought it up…lol

I enjoyed this video very much. I have always heard that Asian parents are super strict with their kids and that is why many of the kids grow up greatly educated eventually securing high earning careers. This video actually finally proved this fact but what I learned is that those Asian kids, yet successful, grow up with resentment with their parents for not showing affection. Even though they have these successful careers, they just do it to satisfy their parents’ expectations.

The "model minority" is a MYTH, also Asian people do better at school because that's what's stressed culturally and familial. The reason why black boys are better at basketball is not because we're more naturally gifted it's because that's what we practice. If black people practiced academics like there was a pro league (and there is) then that's what we'd be good at.

I think u should redo this video cause it would show us the parent insight more why they act the way they do. N then u should do one on us Asian kids how we felt. Lol. I like those two young couple thoughts cause it define the majority of 90% Asian parents

Super cool to see millennial and older parents who have such an open mindset. We don’t want to repeat the memories we had with our parents.
