There are two types of people that say test scores don't matter. 1. People with extremely low test scores. 2. People with 1600s on the SAT or 36s on the ACT.

I think what people need to realize is that college admissions are not always consistent. Generally yes, they admit the best possible applicants that apply to their college. But it's entirely possible to be denied from Berkeley or Stanford and get accepted at Harvard. You can also no get accepted to Harvard, but get accepted to Yale, Princeton or Dartmouth. An example from me, is that I had a friend who was smarter than me in high school. We both applied to a "less than prestigious" UC and I got accepted and he didn't.

SAT and ACT are so pointless. I got a 20 on my ACT and got into my local university, now I’m making 180k with my masters degree. Employers, for the most part, dont care if you went to some prestigious school. As long as you have the degree and or the certifications. Sure it might give you an edge over some other applicants in some work fields, but that is it. Those tests scores are nothing to base your life around, just get a good enough score to be accepted to an average university.

@@cribs3819 medical laboratory science for my bachelors then i went to PA school for my masters. In healthcare they don’t care if you went to harvard or your local university, as long as you have your degree and license. In the real world in general, developing connections can help you gain jobs more than your school name. If you’re still choosing a major then i suggest look at a field your interested in, then a specific job/position, then look up the salary, job growth, etc. to make sure it is worth it. Don’t get fooled like others where you pick a random useless degree that won’t help you later on.

For everyone reading this, I just want you to know that at the end of the day, Harvard and many of these Ivy League schools accept based on their institutional needs, meaning that you can do everything right and be the perfect student, and still get rejected because you are simply not who they are not looking for. A few years into the workforce, where you went to college will no longer matter.

Looking back, I think it’s all stupid, the entrance process & the nonsense these schools put students through, & the price, let’s not talk about price. If I was smart when I was young, I’d have just went to a state school & been done with it. Why? Because it really doesn’t matter at the end of the day, I graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering, so I thought I was on top of the world, until I realized industry just doesn’t care, they need bodies. This is what a corporation calls an engineer from let’s say Cornell vs Arizona State, employee #1 & employee #2 that’s about it. The only acknowledgment I got from graduating out of DUKE, whose well known for science & research was; “oh that’s nice” must be cool there, then back to work I went. The reasonable expectation from industry is that you are going to college to make money, so outside of that, anything that doesn’t make them money, such as the name of your alma mater, it doesn’t really matter. You’re not going to command the same salary as someone in a senior position at your company just because of a name, they still want to see results. Well, that’s my spill. Hope you all scouting schools make informed choices, I’d look at price first, then degree programs second.

@Lemurai. You are 100% correct. I have and BS and Masters in CompSci at an HBCU. Employers do not care what school you graduated from. However, they do care about experience, internships and such. Why go into debt when you don't have to? It seems many people have been brainwashed into thinking they have to go to an Ivy league school to be more marketable.

If you got a scholarship to a school like UC Berkeley and plan to do CS as your major, then choose the school you got a scholarship for..you’re looking to study and use the knowledge in your real career in the future, so if UC Berkeley is more likely to teach you CS (with a scholarship, too)-then choose that one. Academically, Stanford=MIT+Harvard. Especially for Harvard, to be relevant in the AI world of quantum change, it finds itself harder to catch up. It will only get more sluggish with its status quo right now. No yelling at me please, truth hurts.
