About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe! peavey mesa boogie

Surprised The Cars are his favorite. But agree that bands and albums were better in the 70s, 80's and somehow Heartbeat City has become forgotten about and underrated considering how progressive and popular it was at the time.

Good choice, but I would probably go with Master of Reality or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Master of Reality is the birth of stoner rock, and a lot of my favourite bands wouldn't be around without it. SBS is a little more proggy, argh it's too difficult to choose. Some of my favourite songs of all time are on both of those (Killing Yourself To Live, Into the Void etc).

Any of the first 3 VH records takes it home for me. Its all great songs with different elements in each record. The first album is so raw and filthy and in your face. Everything is in speed of light. Second has the best tone and every song is soooo good. Rythem and bas section kills in VH II! The 3rd record is the ultimate party record and the production is a killer. Nothing tops early VH.

Oh boy, one record? I gotta say that no matter what, I always find myself coming back to Muse's Origin of Symmetry. Every track on that is pure gold to me, and I cannot get enough of it. Chris' bass playing is a big influence on my playing, and while that album doesn't have his craziest work on it, it really showcases how powerful the fundamentals are. Plug in Baby's bass line is basically all octaves and chugging, but it really carries the song, and sounds badass at the same time.

Deftones' Diamond Eyes record is my favorite of all time. It is such a well written album lyrically, and there are just so many layers sonically. The album not only got me obsessed with the band; it opened my palette up to so many different genres through Deftones' own influences.

Ride the Lightning by Metallica. Such a masterpiece, all of the their songs were deliberately not like what you would expect, that album had thrashing head-bangers, hardcore solos, and actual masterpieces. Songs like For Whom the Bell Tolls, Ride the Lightning, Creeping Death, and Call of Ktulu were almost like compositions of metal. And of course we have Fade to Black, that song truly expresses emotion like no other song, it's acoustic intro and verses depicts sadness and the riffs and solos mixed with it makes one of the best songs of all time.

Nice! Metallica made such a huge leap forward musically with Ride the Lightning from what they did on Kill 'em All (which is a great album, too).

@@argie9914 my favourite album of Coltrane's is actually My Favourite Things - hearing him restrain himself and really bring out melody for the showtunes they covered was just awesome, and his band was phenomenal too! They have such an interesting, experimental take on Summertime that really hints at Coltrane's later compositional techniques with this almost constantly unresolved tension throughout with the major minor chords!

I have two: No More Tears - Ozzy Osbourne; I grew up with this record. It has followed me through life and has helped me through the toughest of times giving me guidance and inspiration. Especially tracks like Mama I'm Coming Home and Road To Nowhere. It means an awful lot to me. ...And Justice For All - Metallica; The first band/record that I found myself; previously my music taste was much like my dad's but I found Metallica through my own accord and was instantly hooked on those killer riffs and James Hetfield's roaring vocals. They were the band that got me into the heavier side of rock/metal.

LOL at Adam Neely kicking off a Glenn vid! As far as my favorite album...maybe Signals by Rush. It's probably the one that got me into music and I still go back to it regularly. Or maybe Grace Under Pressure, which over the years just gets better every time I listen to it. Tough question. Black Sabbath had like 4 or 5 amazing albums, Dave Brubeck's Time Out got me into jazz, the list goes on and on.

I was thinking of Grace Under Pressure, as well. Formerly, my least favorite track had been Red Sector A. The harsh sounding instrumentation during the verses had me convinced it was about a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic prison. For some reason, I didn't associate the song with the real-life horror of a concentration camp. Now, it is my favorite song on the album.

Search around, there is a recent interview of Geddy Lee with Dan Rather and he goes into how his mom and dad basically met in a concentration camp. It's pretty heavy stuff, and re-listening to Red Sector A is crushing.

I mostly listen to classic rock from the 60s and 70s like Zepellin, The Stones, The Beatles, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Cream, Hendrix stuff like that. And I'm not much of a metal head but for some reason a record I always return to and was the reason i picked up the guitar was Rust in Peace by Megadeth. I remember I was 12 mostly listened to hip hop and I saw an episode of this cartoon called Duck Rogers. They had an episode where they revive Dave Mustaine from the dead(the cartoon was in the future), during the end of the episode they played this song and it blew my mind. I opened up youtube and just typed megadeth and my mind was blown. Not only did that introduce me to metal, but to rock music as a whole.
