I was in Nashville in the fall and I went to the Gibson garage, spent about 3 hours there trying everything I could. The two best playing guitars in the store were a Gibson explorer that was $2000 and an Epiphone Crestwood that was $999. They were way more comfortable, with faster necks than anything else in the store - and they both held tune better (likely because neither had the traditional Gibson headstock). I ended up buying the epiphone, much to the amazement of two of the sales guys that’d been helping me out (who were great, btw). I invited them to play it before packing it up - after about a minute each, they were no longer surprised. The thing shreds, plays like a dream, and was made in China.

That just happens sometimes, and it's honestly a wonderful thing. Every guitar is like it's own bowl of soup all the infredients add up to one thing; sometimes top ramen can be made just perfectly while a more refined soup with good ingredeints doesn't always mean it will taste better to you.

The big problem nowadays is that you have to travel (far) to choose amongst a bunch of guitars to find something that matches your needs. Here in Germany one major retailer closed his shops in Hamburg and Berlin. If you order a guitar online shop you can send it back within a month an get 100% refund - but how often will you do it before something acceptable is in the delivery? You are blessed when Nashville is within reach.

No need for Gibson. I'm saying this because I played one Gibson SG and it was dog poop. A very expensive excrement dog sample. The tone issue in general... I saw a video of Will Putney producing a metal track. They switched a guitar halfway through a song for something else and it did have more bite and fit the song better. The difference wasn't dramatic. The guitar tone he replaced was already KILLER. They ended up with a slightly more killer tone. None of us would have known. 😊

On most amps the FX loops are series and not parallel, meaning if you take the signal from the send and don't return it to the return the sound will not pass through to the power section and therefore the speaker, meaning the speaker will only act as a load for the power amp and not as the projector of the sound. So going from the FX send to the interface will not make your ears bleed from the speaker :)

You think we live in an amazing time because we need less and less expensive gear to get excellent results. Whether it's guitar amps or the guitars themselves, everything is becoming lighter, more intuitive, easier to use, and smarter. A few years ago, I owned models from Gibson and Fender, and now, even after years of guitar experience, I play on a Harley Benton with a tube amp from the same brand. I just modified the speaker, and it's an absolute killer. The same goes for pedals. Tone City makes excellent analog copies, and you don't need more than that. There's no need for pedals that cost a fortune. For modeling, I have a Blackstar Silverline head connected to an Orange PPC212 cabinet with Celestion Vintage 30’s speakers. It sounds so good that there's no need for a €4000 tube amp either. I think people spend way too much time obsessing over gear rather than actually playing guitar, and that's a problem nowadays. The truth is, you don't need very expensive gear to do well. Just pick up the guitar and play at least four or five hours a day, every day, and you'll see improvement.

I worked on someone’s Epiphone that had a back bowed neck. I thought they might be screwed because Gibson’s have a traditional one way truss rod. I discovered the Epiphone had a two way truss rod. I could fix the back bow by turning the truss rod nut. The Gibson’s are a more traditional guitar. They have nitrocellulose finishes, hand scraped binding, fret nibs, real inlay work ect…. The Epiphones are Meade with more modern and less expensive building processes. I’ve played some decent Epiphones and decent Gibson’s. Epiphones have more of a plastic feel to them. They aren’t going to age and break in like a Gibson. They might look similar but feel wise I think they are quite different.

Hey Glenn! I've got a little "less is more" story for you...from a BASS PLAYER! In 2010 I think, I was dicking around with Guitar Hero/Rock band and getting frustrated that there were songs that were kicking my ass that I had actually learned on real guitar when I had messed around with playing about 10 years prior. My roommates at the time had a band and couldn't keep a bass player, so I just went and bought a bass. I got an Epiphone Goth Thunderbird "used" (but it was clearly pretty much brand new) for $200. When the amp their previous bassist left at the house died, I picked up a Peavey Firebass 700. Again, about $200 at the time. Over a few months I snagged up 15", 2x10", and 2x12" cabs. I think they were all GK. The only thing I bought new was an EH Deluxe Pi for my distortion (yo, for anyone reading this, that is a FANTASTIC pedal). Overall, the entire rig cost a little less than $1k. So, what's the point here? I would get compliments at every show from other bands with WAAAAAY more expensive gear about how great my tone and overall sound was. And I was a noob, really just trying to get what I needed to make the band work. That rig was absolutely amazing. It crushed live settings and having the modular cabinets meant that I could bring what I needed for whatever venue we were playing. This is in contrast to other guys lugging around a giant 8x10" that requires a van and a handtruck and is total overkill for pretty much any non-stadium or theater gig. It also recorded great, and just that one pedal afforded me an INSANE tonal landscape. So I was fortunate to learn, almost by accident, that $$$$ does NOT equal great tone or just great sound. It's not hard to put together affordable setups, and if you're just looking to spend your money to flex on other people, maybe rock & roll isn't the gig for you. Oh, I also found that LEARNING THE SONGS was a pretty big help as well. Just so you know, some of us neanderthals appreciate playing with people who know the songs. Me pluck big string. Me go BOOM!
@brianmarcus93385 ай бұрын
Speaking on your approach to super quantized mixing and editing (matching and quantizing each pick stroke), what's your opinion on using MIDI controlled digital rigs in a live setting (i.e. an entire tour package using quad cortex's) vs. using heads and cabs? At this point any modern metal tour package doesn't worry about head & cabs and they have their entire show on a couple of QC's, kempers, AXE III's, etc. As someone that uses a QC I understand it's much easier for setup and teardown, allows the player to not worry about playing DDR for patch changes, and the FoH guys have less gear to worry about. But, that in pairing with super compressed drum triggers and vocal backups in the backtracks I feel are taking away from the live aspect of music. It's almost turning into a DJ set with how close to the record that live metal performances are sounding nowadays. Ive been to too many shows recently where im not as impressed by the live performance to where i can just listen to the track for free on Tidal (fuck Spotify) and itll sound the same. Wanna know your take on this? Thanks.

For the bass player, I do FOH and monitors from the FOH desk. I prefer to take a DI from the bass(or off the amp if another FOH guy didn't fry it by sending it 48V, so carry a phantom power blocker!!) as well as a mic'ed signal off the cab. I'm not opposed to using IR's, but I'm not doing that kind of thing. Often, better in-ears and an optimized monitor mix will help. Go with custom molds and 3 or more drivers. The extra isolation and frequency optimized drivers are going to be a big improvement. It's expensive so look at it as an investment in your long-term. Better isolation means you can run it a bit quieter and save your hearing.

I try to stay mindful of that when I'm playing live, so I wonder how different does it really have to be in the studio. When I see people comment how they can’t hear the difference of the sound of the guitar because they can’t see the instrument. Did we forget that MUSIC is something that we LISTEN TO? I don’t remember listening to a song and thinking to myself, man the audio quality would be so much better if there was a video playing in the background. The tone wood debate, for some reason, reminds me of what people say when they are scared to be alone in the dark while someone is calling out to them… “WHAT? I can’t hear you it’s too dark”.

I’m actually about to buy my first premium instrument simply as a gift to myself for my 31st birthday. But all my life I used “budget” gear because I grew up poor and simply got what I could afford until I worked my way out of it as an adult. I just want one really nice premium bass, but ngl, aside from that, I’d be happy just buying Glarry’s to fool around with. One premium instrument for serious use, and then cheap ones to noodle and travel with. Things I wouldn’t be too upset of they got damaged or stolen. People underestimate what you can do with “cheap” gear these days. Especially when everyone is literally just using modelers and sims for their sound. At this point you can plug anything into software and make it sound good.

There is never been a better time to be a frugal musician than right now, and thing are only going to get cheaper. We have a $400 preamp pedal that can let you play AI captures of an actual $100,000-250,000 Dumble ODS in your own $600/mo 1bd apartment. Who would have thunk that we might have found ways to make music gear and audio equipment cheaper 100+ years after their invention. We've also found ways to makes it more expensive too, but that's beside the point.

Hey Glenn. The question about Sabbath intrigued me. In my pursuit of a not overly distorted, but still heavy sound I came across Being As An Ocean - Salute e Vita. I know its not exactly your style but I cant really find out why this production sounds heavy, apart from the drop tuning (and maybe metallica style drum production?? i am not good at this) . The whole thing sounds to me really heavy but clean....any hints to that direction?

*Serious question*: Maybe Glenn could answer this? Electro-harmonix is selling clones of speakers for a very attractive price for budget guitarists how is the quality on these? Here's the following. and their description. 12VR offers 75W of power handling from a 12 in. platform. This special design sounds like vintage Celestion. 12TS8 30W 1x12 speaker offers classic American tone, and is great, economical replacement for Fender drivers and others. I really enjoy the Monday music listening❤ I've brought this up a couple of times without any response whatsoever why???

GLEEEENNNNN! What the hell man? I work at a thankless job here in Lake Havasu, AZ, in 120 degree heat all week long. Just so I can come home on Friday, cool off, and watch Viewers Comments to end my week! But lately it is released on Saturdays? What gives?...

a genuine question. i have an gibson sg from 96 and i love the guitar probably because i got it from my brother. But the bridge pickup sounds so dam muddy and messy and i'm not sure if i'm gonna replace it or if i maybe can eq that out. Keep up the great work you have saved me a lot off money with your videos.

Didn't you get an Audient desk a couple years ago? I think that may have been just before "The Event", when you were in LA? Yikes, I've been following you for a long time now..I know the Audient and your AMS Neve are different beasts, but would you still recommend the Audient for tracking and mixing?

I bought a Gibson in 1980. I was taking guitar lessons at a music store and it was time to get a better guitar than the POS I was learning on. The store owner took me to the used guitar rack. 25% of it were used Les Pauls. I played all of them and liked a 72 Custom the best. Paid $235 for it. I still have it. It’s what I got better at playing on. Not too many guitar choices in 1980. A decent Gibson was one of the better choices. People wanted the pre CBS Fenders and pre Norton Gibson’s because the build quality was better. Demand drove the prices up even in 1980. Even adjusted for inflation you can get better gear cheaper now. It’s no longer just a Gibson and Fender world.

I can see you putting on a chef coat and yelling insults at musicians in the studio like Gordon Ramsay. Might be a good skit for the channel. "Studio Nightmares" "Hell's Studio"

I like what you state about songwriting. Good songs, that people what to hear & hear again should be our focus. From your point of reference, what would a common thread be among the songs that you like to hear & hear again?

Went to a bandmate's gig with his other group and the guitar sounded great. Afterwards we were looking at his rig and it was a 200€ Harley Benton through an old cheap Zoom pedal. Like my guitarist friend Jose always says, it's not the ear it 's the hands playing the guitar.

I had a 1976 Les Paul that played soo well. I love the 70s Gibson necks.

like you said in the last video, the expensive gear is great to have, but not totally necessary. its more impressive if someone takes garbage gear and create something that sounds awesome or dare I say different.

Glennn! I was wondering how you feel about older black metal projects that purposely make their recordings sound completely raw. For example I’m thinking of stuff like Blasphemy or even Burzum, which are well known in that genre. I guess some people think it was purposely underproduced to have a more eerie vibe and wanted to hear your thoughts about recording in that style now days. Love the content have been binge watching a lot of the show lately!

I keep telling people about your videos, especially the pickup vids. Idiots say that you don't understand the feel of the guitar, I think you play ok. I have been playing over forty years and you make alot of sense. The only thing different I hear in active pickups is they are a little hotter. I have wasted alot of money on pickups I wish I had seen your vids years ago!!

'Would you listen to a record that had been produced like that? ' Funnily enough AFAIK one of Brian Eno's alternative strategies cards had 'will it sell? ' on it!

I was made fun of for using a cheapo used multieffect board (in a time where cortexes and the like werent ubiquitous) but it served me well. Biggest plus was being able to test so much stuff, allowing me to find my style without going through a bunch of pedals I wont use in the long run. Same with guitars. If someone makes fun of somebody else about their choice in gear all I hear is "i cant play"
@Allena135 ай бұрын
Something that is really useful for cleaning up bass/guitar playing is to just practice through headphones. It makes it so all you can hear is the output of the instrument and you can hear much more clearly any strings that ring out etc.

I kept my 72 Les Paul I got in 1980 for a reason. It still plays and sounds great. It weighs 10.5 pounds. That’s the only thing bad about it. It was the best guitar on the used rack so I snagged it.

I’d imagine with all the years of SMG VC and Stupid Musician Texts, musicians(and maybe a handful of musicians) would already understand that “better” gear ≠ good music!! The fact that musicians like this still exist is mortifying!

Glenn, I second that statement about paperwork. As a native Hawaiian traveling from California to Mexico, I had no problems crossing the border INTO Mexico. At that time, a passport wasn’t required to cross the California-Mexico border. However, when we’d tried to return to California through San Ysidro, my family was detained because they’d thought that my dad was trying to smuggle me and my brother across the border because we’d both looked Mexican. Our paperwork was fine but the racist officer who pulled us over thought my dad’s CDL (commercial drivers license) was fake. After hours of back and forth, we were fortunate to run into a CBP officer who’d recognized my mom and had recently transferred to that post a few weeks prior. Had it not been for him, we’d likely be stuck in Mexico for much longer than we’d planned. In short, do NOT fuck around with CBP in the states! Make sure your paperwork is in order or get harassed by racist rent-a-cops.

Hey Glenn! Love the show and what you do for the musicians in the world who care about the truth as opposed to the straight bullshit most guitarists say. I'm a pretty inexperienced guitar player and with your comments about metalheads taking all the soul out of the music, I was wondering, where do you draw the line between necessary improvements and taking the rock out of rock n roll?

10:28 guitars made of reclaimed wood. Brian May made his guitar from a mantle in their home. Him and his father did the work. Maybe those people should make guitars for a Brian May copy. The mantle in question was over 100 years old. The advantage to using such old wood, The wood is already bent to whatever shape it wants to be.

Learn how to do fretwork and setups. You will save a lot of money and you can make a solid guitar play much better. The tools will pay for themselves. Fretwork is where they cut corners on cheaper guitars because it’s labor intensive. They will also use soft fret wire that’s easier to shape. So on a cheaper guitar you are going to need more fret maintenance.

To people talking about buying a 10k guitar….i don’t know about anyone else, but I buy the guitar I can play at a gig. If you have enough money to buy a custom shop Gibson, then bully for you. I’m not about to risk a guitar walking away from me at a gig. I play most with a guitar I’m not afraid of getting a scratch on or potentially damaged. Around 800-1400 usd is about the limit I’m willing to risk it on a guitar. I will spend more occasionally but I find myself mostly playing, and feeling most comfortable with my well made imports, I’ve gigged with my PRS S2 but at a price higher than that guitar I’m too risk averse. It’s a tool not a museum piece.
