Asking My Kids If I’m A Good Dad - their answers surprised me

I am 57 yrs old. My dad passed away 11 years ago. I want to tell you 3 things about my daddy that made him a great dad. Before I was born, my dad needed a couple of new shirts. He went downtown to purchase them, but he passed a children's shop on the way back home. He went and returned this shirts and bought my 2 sisters some clothes with the money. My daddy only went to church for weddings and funerals, but he has the most Christian man I know. He and my mother seperated one time. The kids across the street teased me about it, relentlessly. My parents reconciled and my daddy came home. Shourtly after, those kid's father lost his mind. He was never the same after coming home from Vietnam and he finally completely lost touch with reality. We would see him walking down the highway, talking to himself. Their mom, did not work, as was the case with lots of women at that time. Their grass grew tall and my parents got word that they didn't have food to eat. The mom and kids left for the day and my father mowed her lawn. The next day, he put several bags of groceries in their car. He never told him he did it and he told me not to tell them either. Boy was I disappointed that I wasn't able to gloat. But my father said, you never take pleasure in someone else's misfortune, even if they took pleasure in yours. That only shows their lack of character. I never told. Lastly, I was washing dishes and I dropped a glass and it broke. He asked what happened and I said the glass broke. He said, it was just sitting there and spontaneously broke? I said, no, I dropped it and it broke. He said, so you broke the glass, correct? I said, yes, but it was an accident. He said, accident or not, you broke the glass and you need to say, "I broke the glass." I said it, but I thought he was being really mean. I figured out as a young adult, he was just making me be responsible for my actions. I am so thankful to have had him for a father. He was a quiet man, rarely raised his voice to his daughters. He was an excellent provider and I always felt safe and protected by my father. I miss him so much. I was looking through a box where he has saved all of the greetign cards that we had given him. I saw one Father's Day card that read that even if he hadn't been my father, I would want him as a friend. The next year, the same poem was in a card with a different picture and I had given it to him. I miss my father every day and I pray that one day, I will see him again. I love you daddy.

@@auggie1.0 And I always suspected that he was not my biological father. My parents had split one time early in their marriage. They got back together and I was born. I went on the Judge Mathis sure and my sister is my half sister. My mom still denies it, so I may never know who my biological father is, but I love my daddy so much and I am thankful he raised me. I'm the youngest of 3 girls.

What a beautiful description of your father.. i too called my father, daddy. Im turning 50 he passed away 3 years ago, 2 days ago was his anniversary of his death. He was an amazing man. I wrote a poem for him. It ended with the line Daddy im a princess because you my daddy you were a king.

@No Name...Wow.... you were blessed...biological or not, what a great dad and so sweet for you to have retained all of these precious things about him. I'm 53 and its a possibility I was mixed up at birth because they told my mom when they took me out that she had a boy and an hour late brought her me...a girl..I even have male on my original birth certificate 😂😂but I would NEVER pursue finding out for sure because my parents were the best...especially my dad....so if this did occur at the hospital back in 1968 I am sooo thankful🥰😂

One thing I appreciate about my dad was he never gave up being apart of my life and my brothers even after my parents divorce. He wasn’t my main provider after their split but he never gave up on being a father!

i did not have a father as my father died when i was 3, and i did not have a father figure at all, i think that is why i enjoy watching your channel so much, its because you are just such a great dad and your girls will be so well adjusted because of it. I love that you asked us to let our fathers know how much we appreciate him, and what we think our fathers did that made a difference. My earthly father died when I was a wee girl, but I remember him as a wonderful, patient, loving and kind father to me. The best and one thing that I hold dear to my heart is that he talked to me. We would have in my little life, great conversations. He made me feel like everything I said was important. It gave me confidence and caused me to trust my ideas/thoughts/opinions, etc. I am open to meeting new people because I saw how he wasn’t intimidated or afraid to strike up a conversation with anyone. In fact, I saw you lying down talking to Ava in a recent blog and it reminded me of my dad. Since he is no longer here, I stopped and thanked my Heavenly Father in prayer. I am reminded that I am not an orphan and that He adopted me into His family and for that I am eternally grateful. I may be on my own, but I am not ever alone. Really good beginning to the vlog. My biological father was not a good father but my Stepdad, despite our differences, has always been respectful, generous and supportive towards me and to his other step children. First, I just want to say I really enjoy watching you as a awesome hands on father to your girls. I am 57 years old and what my dad taught me was dedication, diligence and commitment especially when it came to working and taking care of family. I was 1 of 9 and he worked 2 jobs to care for us, one as a mailman and one cleaning the schools. Sometimes he would come home with swollen feet but he never complained. Nor did he ever ask for help nor got on public assistance. He wrote 9 checks each week for our school lunches. Now, here I am at 57, just retired (unplanned due to surplus) after working 35 years driving all over metro Atlanta. Even though I'm in another chapter of my life, I'm grateful he taught me the importance of working and never quitting. He died in 2012, my mom in 2013. I miss them both so much but know I will see them again. Thank you Jamie. I see such a beautiful heart through watching your blogs and I will agree just by seeing your blogs what a humble and caring man your dad is. Happy Father's Day.

My dad would always drop and pick me up from the zillion school activities that i did. He gave us more than sufficient money. He always bought whatever food we want. He took us to nice vacations. He carried us to all the circuses that ever came here and amusement parks. Now I'm 30 and i have a pharmacy and he retired to help me in it. And my mom's even better. I could never thank them enough. One thing I appreciated about my Dad is, he was in a band and he would let me and my big sister come to the tavern and listen to him sing and play. We played the pin ball machines and had chips and soda. It was awesome. We loved it. He would sing to us all the time. He taught me how to play guitar. I got my first guitar at 14 from my Dad. He was always there for us, and was a hard worker, making sure we had everything we needed and some of the things we just wanted. My Dad helped me to value my integrity by affirming that he could take whatever I said "to the bank." That was a high compliment, knowing he believed I always told the truth, so consequently I continued to live my life as a woman of integrity. My dad was not a very emotional person, maybe even cold at times. It was the times we lived back in the fifties. But he was very good providing and was always concerned that we have everything. I always knew I wanted to be more hands on with my kids and kiss them and hug them as much as I could! I believe I was able to accomplish that. Fathers know a day step up to the plate more. They get up to feed baby, take them out for walks and even change their diapers! The relationship you have with Ava and Zoe is wonderful and a pleasure to be able to watch through the screen your interaction with them. You are a great father to them. Good job

I have to be honest, my dad wasn’t in my life. He left our family when I was really young and re-emerged recently to try to force a relationship with me now that I’m an adult (boo!). Despite his many (many) shortcomings, there is one thing he did that I am incredibly grateful for - he left me in the care of a really loving mother who doubled as both mom and dad to me during the toughest of times. Each Father’s Day I celebrate her and count my blessings that she stuck around and gave me double the love every day of my father’s absence. However, the number one thing that I appreciate the most is when my dad accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, which in turn he presented the plan of salvation to his children. I too accepted Jesus into my heart and have the promise/hope of one day spending an eternity in heaven with Jesus Christ. No greater love than the love of God the Father. 💞
