Love your videos. When I was in college, I was going through some pretty horrific psychological stuff with my family and I made a speech in speech class that made my professor tear up. I started it by saying "speak to me the sweetest lies and I will listen longer, reveal to me one heinous truth and I will shun you evermore." I had come up with this phrase in highschool to encapsulate the feeling I got from everyone around me. People loved to be lied to, even if that lie kept them in a bad place and could lead to worse. Pointing things out to them, even in a kind way with gentle compliments beside it riled such a huge swell of hatred. I asked the class if they agreed with the statement and most of the class did. I mentioned in that speech that I used art to escape from the madness that I felt around me. I guess the teacher had had a falling out with one of his kids over him pointing out a destructive habit they had gotten into. So to your question of whether people actually seek out truth to begin with, I would say many don't. They just want reassurance that their world view is right and they don't need to change, even if it hurts them.... looking forward to more of your videos.

Unfortunately I would agree; when many people speak about a "truth" they're not really looking for one, however I also don't think there are truths to find, just ones which generally agreed upon. Part of the motivation behind recent videos has been watching how many people do actively choose lies to maintain their "truth," people who have built their entire beings on something they took as true which actually has no basis. A great fear of mine is becoming like that, which is probably why I keep doing this. I think, deep down I could just be reinforcing my only already held views, and what I say changes from video to video so there is some element of that for sure, but I also believe always wanting to try and look is one way to try and not fall to that entirely

@@ProfessorViral I feel like staying curious and exploring other worldviews through philosophy is a nice thing to do and often keeps us from stagnating and helps us to understand our own underlying value structures and how or if they can change. I believe that, at the end of the day, many of life's issues boil down to choices we make about truths. There is an impirical fact ( Excessive consumption of illicit substances will cause bodily harm, for instance.) But whether or not an individual sees that as a bad thing is not guaranteed. Some people will hold the value in themselves that the world may be better off without them and it is good that they are wasting away. While someone who loves them believes they hold value and can become a better form of themselves. And, of course, that better form of themself could look like anything. And it may very well cause offense to someone else. Human life is really complex and (to me) that makes us endlessly fascinating and frustrating at the same time. Thanks for the bit of conversation.

You give me a reason to use this platform. Thank you for the food for thought, Professor! I want to jump on the "why train" too, so here I go: I love learning new lessons and applying them in my daily life, changing the way I see things when I think it's right and the way I act in specific situations. But I've noticed that after a while, my mind seems to go back to its prior state, for example, I start making the same mistakes I stopped making thanks to what I had learned again, it's like I need to remind myself of those lessons every once in a while. Why?

Oh my god, I adore this movie so much. I rewatch it every year to cry and learn something new ever year. Wolf's Children radiates so much parental love and yet the word "love" is never uttered. It is in everything Hana does and feels for her children, there is love even in her dreams with her husband. I love how Yuki choosing to stay human isn't seen as a caving in to peer pressure or a failure on her part. She gains a healthy understanding of where she wants her place in the world to be and who she is. I love how Ame choosing fill in for protector of the mountain isn't seen as "running away" from the human world or the human side of himself. Yuki understands she _has_ to conform and she only realizes how important that is until she accidentally injures someone. Ame understands that every inhabitant of the mountain, no matter how big or small, play a role in preserving the ecosystem and that has to be protected. I love how the only time Hana says do this "for me", not "for papa" is when she pressures Ame not to be a wolf. I love how she changes the flower's of her husband's shrine every season. I love how it's not hitting the books that flourishes Hana's garden, but experience and the advice and support of her neighbors. AAA I love this movie 🥹 Thank you so much for covering it!!
@ProfessorViral

I didn't think about it, but that's probably part of why I enjoyed the movie that they don't spend it directly stating "love" this, "love" that, but show you actions which require love instead. The most obvious it gets with anything is right at the end when she shouts to Ame, but that felt more like acceptance than realization, as she allowed them to pick their own paths all movie, but struggled once Ame was so staunch in choosing one. So, it feels fitting for her to yell that all out, because she knew it, but was struggle to accept it. Great mentions, thank you!
@icahopilm898
@icahopilm898 2 ай бұрын
@@ProfessorViral Exactly! It's show, don't tell. Not once was it implied in the film that Yuki and Ame should feel indebted to Hana for being an amazing mom. Everything she did for her children-feeding, clothing, housing, teaching, loving, and encouraging them-was a given. In Hana's mind, her children were entitled to these things by virtue of being born. She asks what she's 'done' for Ame, and he turns around in shock. Literally throughout the entire movie, she has done everything for them, but she doesn’t see it that way because her children were owed these things in the first place. I think that scene on the mountain was also about acceptance. Every time Hana lost someone in her life or felt like she was losing someone, it rained. But it was a sunrise when Ame left. :)

It's funny because I was raised by middle-aged folk with my mom being 37 years old when she had me. When you ask why in my family, especially when someone tells you to do something, it's considered challenging their authority. All I want is some context for what's going on. Like, if you tell me not to mention certain things or to do seemingly weird favors out of the blue. They treat you like a kid and act like you're too stupid to understand or that they want an unquestioning little minion. Because questioning them shows a lack of trust, respect, and loyalty to your family. I say fuck that, tell me why I have to do things so that we're all on the same page. One of my aunts is especially bad with this because she thinks I won't do what she says just because I ask why. The worst part is when you make a mistake that could've been avoided if you knew what was going on. Then they blame you for it. Like when that same aunt got hit with credit card fraud because she needed me to give her credit card info over the phone. I assumed she was just paying a bill because she refused to tell me why.
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral 2 ай бұрын
I will say it can be draining to have to give context for everything, I believe that's been cited as part of why people's arguments in conversation will start simple and then grow under questioning, because its easier to say less. However, that itself then shows why we should invite, and ourselves ask, why, because that's how we get from "I don't feel like it" to actually explaining what we're feeling, or avoiding fraud, or anything of the sort. We never know if we never ask

Ok so maybe I missed something but by end of the film the children don’t learn this because the girl stays as a human all the time and the boy is a Wolff all the time. I always thought that that was sad because they were rejecting their nature as both. And it felt like that’s what the film was leading to. Like what you said in the video: that the assumption that they had to be one or the other is wrong and that they can be both. So I was wondering what your thoughts on the end were since you didn’t really talk about the end very much in the video
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral 2 ай бұрын
My conclusion was drawn from Hana accepting the decisions of her children. She always let them pick their own path, but drew a line when Ame made a more drastic decision. However, in the end she sees that her own assumptions won't actually line up with what's best for him, and has to let him choose instead. There also Yuki's acceptance of being both (to some degree) in showing Sohei her wolf side, as well as his acceptance of seeing it, which allows her to relax and form a deeper bond than forcing herself to 100% be human did. Even if she only drops to 95% human, that's just her specific level of how much of each is right for her life. Although I didn't cover that interaction here but I likely should have. I don't think the lesson is very overt, or maybe even that solid at all, but those aspects and the reference to Socrates led me to state it. I also could just be stating what I felt was more correct over the movie. I try to remove my bias, but it will always have an impact

@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral 2 ай бұрын
Can you explain how it would be better broken up? As I see it, I'm covering one topic throughout the whole video, which is rethinking what we assume. This can only be broken into the necessary explanation of the topic, the pitfalls of assumptions and what to do about it, which could only be three videos, one of which would have minimal informative value, and in my experience making a video focused on the researched section alone would perform terribly, so I packaged it here instead. Similarly, a Livestream would draw a minimal amount of viewers as it's not what people expect from me. I'm not saying no, but I do think people overestimate effective "content strategies" based on what works in a different niche

Wait is that how social norms are made of often random or unique cases, traditions and opinions that become mainstream and trends? Of course some are morals but that can play less of a role in aharm and good than people think what tsaid normsa are. Or way unrelated to current conditions. That people should rather try to do what is the right to do now than doing something under way different conditions thought right and good and nessesary, but what is now debated what is right and good and nessesary considered. While having hte value of a history that people can take safety in still. Because feeling as part of something is kinda nice and the base of civilisation. Which mght be just tradition vs progress? Which in my opinion, yes remember history, but critical too, and take what is harmless and good and change what is outdated and not harmless, and stops progress and more changing for what is nedded good and helps now. And that needing to be discussed all of the time. Not "kids those days bla bla" atr least not as argument, peope complain, it can be healthy, but its not an argument for ignoring process. Ok thats probably not the forced assimilation in society or be an outsider debate here because thats what its made to be, nor leaving more fluid alternatives, ok not enough fluid alternatives i guess.

I mean a lot people like children and country and selfgrow stuff (selfgrowing stuff is really good actually if viable, just, like you would need to live rural and acess, or rent a piece ovf an akre i guess, and even then, like farmer heavy have to calculate and live with weather being a bit of luck, climate change not making it better, weather is getting crazy changing which is the worst for harvests) Dunno how my cousin does it, i gues he has to like all the work. But ther can be farm holicays or visits or selfgrow small, and not just mahruiana. ?! Remember and show wher stuff grows? Like there farmers kalenders wisdoms are not nesseasary factual, but ther is a lot things that actually worksand they research and reconstruct, is there something to it. (like snow being good for plants protection) I mean it has universities for a reason, agriculture is really complex and has a lot to research and consider. Including experience and just praxis and error and failure, which maybe is the most relaxing there, it takes time, and you try stuff , and it works or doesnt and things go wrong. Let alone the breeds that happen. the crossbreeding tries naturally letting them , its a big science. Idk mint is hard to kill and makes good tea mixed with other herbs, some also hard to kill. Thats nice. But its probably really hard to be selfsubstaining and a lot of work. Also yeah, if you have more you can still sell or trade or gift. Dunno at least farm exposure is nice to see how complex life is and weird and care and. Socrates over Aristoteles. Hana might want to have a less hard life for her kids, and them not seeing a future as farmer in the village?
