Thanks for your video. Just read a story about a local group that did this and wanted to refresh my memory. I've seen "Catch Me If You Can" and watched many of Abigail's lectures and presentations. The group was smart enough to "launder," but dumb enough to do it at Walmart, so there are now published pictures of four people going into Walmart in two teams; one to buy with the forged check, one to return the items for cash. Their vehicle was also captured on camera. Funny how people can be clever enough to use the internet to learn to wash a check, but so inept as to overlook the mass of security cameras at a Walmart. On another interesting point, the photo of the couple that bought the goods coming out of Walmart is from a low angle -- about the height of a person. Walmarts here have a security company that drive around the parking lot and patrol the store. The truck they drive around in must have a camera in it, which is interesting and makes sense. Anyway, guessing these folks will be caught by the end of the day, if they don't just turn themselves in. No doubt they've been contacted by family and friends that have seen the published security photos.

This happened to me and it wasn't funny at all. My check was altered once and I lost $4000 from my account in a second no one noticed no one said a word. I thi nk they need to have more than one person checking the check before they cash it. It could ruin a person, and it takes a long time to fix. Be Careful out there. I have been using the "Signo Uni-ball 207" pens for many years . I have bought them at Staples, Office Depot, and Target. My brother recently bought some online through Amazon. Last Christmas, I bought a bonus 9 pack of these pens at Target for about $9. They recommend using black ink. I would suggest getting either the medium 0.7mm or the bold 1.0mm. The medium pen may skip at times, but usually doesn't bleed through the paper. The bold puts out much more ink and never skips, but can bleed through the paper.

Okay so it works with normal handwritten cheques. Suppose its a cheque issued by a bank which is machine printed, can a machine printed cheque be washed?

Depends on the ink and printer used: + If it's a fused-MICR-toner; most likely not - the pigment is melted into the paper fibers, by the time the pigment could possible be removed the paper has fallen apart. This ink is similar to the MICR ink used to print the bank information at the bottom of the check. You're not using a cotton-swab and acetone to get this stuff off of the paper. + Common copy/printer-toner, _might_ be removable with some great difficulty; however, the solvents (yes a mixture of solvents) are not commonly available outside of a laboratory/industrial setting as they can be quite toxic - certainly not available at the local hardware store. Even then, there will usually be a ghost of the previous information along with the fact that most checks will show damage from these solvents (even if using a cotton-swab) . Even if using a tape-n-soak method, the pre-printed information (customer name, address, etc..) would more than likely be removed along with other security features as the solvents used will also dissolve the tape! + If it's from an ink-jet, here again, that depends; pigmented inks will most likely not be easily washed out (these work along the same line as the Signo-207 with the pigmented ink - usually photograph capable printers will use this type of ink as it gives the best image quality), whereas the cheaper dye based inks will washout with very little effort. ++ There's a third printing option - crimped printing - it's becoming less common now that fused-toner printers are cheap; however, I can remember getting checks where the PayTo, written amount, and numerical amounts were crimp embossed into the check paper - not washing that out!

Here's what I don't get. You have someone reconcilling your bank accounts every month utilizing some automated accounting software, i.e, QB, Quicken, etc.. If you verify the check, the amount, and the vendor the check was payable to during this process then check fraud and worries about it are moot. The bank is required to refund any fraudulent activity, as long as you, or your firm were not grossly negligent, i.e, you gave out your pin, handed a blank check over to someone, etc.

This is all very dependent on the contract you sign with the bank, and how much time they give you. Often there is a time limit for informing the bank of an issue. Yes there are safety nets in place and banks are required to refund fraud within limitations, but it's easier to prepare than to deal with the aftermath. I'd rather put the cork in a bottle of wine instead of having to clean the wine from my carpet.

You are missing something big here, especially with checks written to the IRS. The check #126 that you wrote to the IRS in April 2020 for a $10,000 2021 estimated tax payment clears the bank timely, and you mark it off as cleared when doing your daily, weekly, or monthly reconciliation. It isn't until you start getting notices from the IRS eighteen months later (or longer during the pandemic) that you start to look into it. Most banks don't return cancelled checks, so you send the IRS a copy of your bank statement showing check #126 clearing on a specific day. Eventually (months later), you finally go to the bank to get a copy of the check to send to the IRS (because the image online is so blurry it is unreadable), only then finding out that the payee was changed. VERY easy to do if the payee is "IRS". The rest of the check is your original signature and written amount. By the time you find out what happened, it is two years or longer, and the thieves are long gone. Since it is usually retired individuals who insist on handwriting and mailing checks, they are not as tech savvy, and probably do not even know how to check their bank account online. Even if the bank does print images of the cancelled checks with the bank statements, they are often deliberately blurred for security reasons, and it is hard to spot the change. This is a very low tech/high reward crime aimed at retirees. The perpetrators are usually homeless and itinerant. Since such a long time has gone by since the fraud initially happened, it is very difficult to get the bank to issue a refund, and usually involves lawyers and takes years. And it rarely happens just once. Funny story (or urban legend) about the IRS, when they first realized that checks made out to IRS were a problem, some brainchild said, "Fine, we will put "THE" in front and rebrand our name to "THE IRS". Sounded good until they went about making the change, and then found out their website, instead of being IRS.gov, would become THEIRS.gov. Oops!

No, it doesn't. Canada's $1.00 bill was phased out 30 years ago. We have had $1 and $2. coin for decades. F.Y.I. Canada started using polymer bills in 2011. Denominations of the euro notes range from €5 to €500. There has never been a $1 or equivalent note, only Euros.coins.

I don’t think anyone including the dumbest criminals would actually submerge a check they have but one chance not to destroy, in liquid of any sort no matter what the guarantee result is. I’m pretty sure they just treat the areas that they want gone.
