I agree that I don't like censorship in games. I don't care where the game is coming from. So long as we are dealing with fictional characters that don't exploit real people in the creation of them, then it should be allowed. Be it animal things, gore, loli/shota, rape, genocide, mass murder, crime, abuse, whatever dark thing you want to cover. It should be allowed to exist. Dark fantasy can be very engaging and appealing for a variety of reasons. If the topics a game wants to cover don't make you comfortable, then just don't play it. But, don't try to ruin it for someone else who doesn't share in your sensitivities over fictional content which isn't harming any actual real person. No one is making you play a game you won't like. I think that's a completely reasonable thing to ask of others. And, by all means, if a game engages in censorship or whatever else, and that pushes you away, then just don't play it. Support a game that doesn't feel like it's wasting your time. We don't have to like the same things to agree on that, I would think.

@Doomweapon66 Жыл бұрын
@@jackvancekirkland "Everything is political" is more or less a shield used by those to try and pretend as if shoving what their own opinions are into the faces of people who didn't ask is fine and rational. If you're going to use "politics" in your games, you need it to be simple stuff that people can understand and it needs to not be "in your face" or "beating people over the head with a stick." Example: Metal Gear Solid as a franchise. There are multiple points within metal Gear Solid using both the Metal Gears and (more directly) nukes as a political allegory for why global nuclear disarmament is a good thing. This is depicted with the Metal Gears basically being giant unstoppable mechs with powerful weaponry that can only really be countered by using another Metal Gear. Virtually everyone in the games understands the problems with Metal Gears and that type of tech running around because there are several situations where Metal Gears being used for bad purposes nearly results in annihilation of societies. So, why is it fine that Hideo Kojima uses the Metal Gears and nukes for a political argument in favor of nuclear disarmament? 2 primary reasons: 1. Fits in the universe of the game and the game's storyline or timeframe if it's meant to take place in a certain period of time (i.e. Phantom Pain takes place in the Cold War). 2. Multiple occasions occur within the various Metal Gear games where Metal Gears break out or go out of control and end up causing lots of damage to the environment (i.e. MGS V: Phantom Pain's main story has a Metal Gear that goes rogue and it ends up being your job to destroy it after it ends up destroying part of a Russian military base). You can certainly have politics in the game but it needs to make sense, needs to be written properly, and it needs to not be "beating people over the head with a stick." The reason why most games nowadays have this huge issues of people being angry at the politics appearing in games is because the people making the game are absolutely awful at putting the political allegories into games without trying to come across as a Catholic Puritan straight from the Salem Witch Trials. *That* is why "everything is political" is an absolutely BS excuse for video games nowadays. 95% of the people trying to implement those political allegories into their games are not Hideo Kojima or Steven Spielberg in his prime. They are (quite literally in some cases) Tumblr fanfic writers who got kicked off Tumblr when Tumblr decided to get rid of 18+ content. Edit: I would also argue Hideo Kojima is probably one of the smartest game devs in the history of video games as he has managed to perfectly fit in multiple forms of political messages from global nuclear disarmament (MGS V: Phantom Pain) all the way to how the US is just the latest iteration of a nation run by people who treat it as a corporation (Metal Gear Rising Revengeance depicts this with Senator Armstrong, the "Nanomachines Son" guy). Best part is that he managed to put all of it into his games pretty directly and people are completely fine with all of it. The reason why? He wrote it well. And unfortunately for everyone else, the likelihood of ever seeing another Hideo Kojima-level writer is way too low.

The problem with incremental increases to the boiling pot of water in the gaming industry is that it isn't about consumer (frog) choice at all. They know what you want as a player, as a consumer, they just don't want to give it to you. They outright refuse to give it to you. They will in fact force choices upon you that they know you dislike so that they can call you a bigot when you complain for free advertising in advance of their premiere (see Disney in advance of every movie they have made in the last 5 years). They have an agenda, for the top of the gaming companies and the investors it is about money, they are incrementally moving towards live services, loot boxes and other predatory practices just to increase revenue and play time. Scummy but understandable. However there is a growing movement of people put into middling positions of power in Marketing and HR, but also increasingly in the creative side of these companies that have a political agenda and will compromise the game to insert as much of it as they can even though they know that their player base does not want it. Marketing data really is quite clear and readily available to these companies, this isn't rocket science here. This isn't about just play another game, because there are less and less AAA games that are being made for more and more money, and choice is eroding. The independent game market is definitely stepping up to help, but they just can't compete with big budget AAA Games yet. This is the same thing that has torpedoed Hollywood, no one is going to see the big movies anymore, they are tanking with increasing regularity as Hollywood studios tried the same tactic of inserting the message in every film they made robbing people of choice until people just got tired of films in general and walked away to competing media, primarily media outside of the United States that does not censor or virtue signal at the expense of a good story (Japan, India, Korea). The Hollywood studios thought they could corner the market and force you to see their movies, but they were wrong, and those people are not coming back. Ask Bud Light about how flexible people are after they make a moral decision internally. We had a preview of this behavior at the onset of cheap high speed internet, people were fed up with cable companies and their gouging and they cut the cord to take advantage of other media choices, the same thing happened to print media (a plethora of available news online) and magazine websites (too biased and a plethora of alternatives from KZbinrs). The most troublesome part of raising the temperature of the water to boiling is the concept of the slippery slope. Because of this faux woke puritan standard that localizers for games and media created outside of the United States are adopting it is becoming easier and more accepted to perform greater and greater acts of censorship (looking at you Seven Seas) where they will literally rewrite an authors work without permission. Increasing censorship doesn't just stay in one part of society though, it tends to move around, take root and grow in other places as well. Before you know it they disable dislikes on KZbin to protect the White House and Disney and "correct" negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, you are censored for calling a biological male "him" or for your stated political stances, they shut down the twitter page of the president, or suppress information about a whole pandemic because it is politically inconvenient to their narrative. So yeah, sweat the small stuff and as Doomcock says "Stay Angry".

I will never understand why nudity and love in pc games is so heavily censored or banned but excessive violence is absolutely ok. Throw bombs that tear your opponents to pieces, play a butcher who chops off your opponent's limbs or eviscerates them, or even play a cannibalist, which is even possible in the trash game Skyrim. No problem, just don't show love.

I honestly think that there's just a massive hatred for Japan in general and the East because if I'm being a hundred percent Fair these people are actually racist and a lot of them tend to be very xenophobic and I don't use those particular terms lightly because they're abused as often as they are. Because I've seen people go to conventions and other things and have those same exact people get angry at jiggle physics existing in games. Frankly speaking a lot of the time it's kind of difficult to tell whether these people are just virtue signalling all the time or if they actually hate some of this stuff. But it IS the same people.
@RedOblivion711 Жыл бұрын
A lot of the time these people just don’t like anime tropes and culture. It’s completely independent of being racist, you can dislike something with it’s origins from a particular demographic without all the things about disliking an entire race of people being a package deal.

Yeah but the origins are from Japan, they have their own culture and what they prefer. Anime is made for and by Japanese first, American are an after thought even with anome being mainstream. When you interact with their content you are by extension interacting with their culture and to intentionally go around changing someone's culture because you don't like it is xenophobia. You dont like anime tropes? To bad go watch something else its obvious this anime isn't meant for you. The amount of people who go into anime and dislike it who want to instead change it rather than walking away is pure arrogance. In Japan's case from my observation its not separated because Japanese and Asain people in general are considered stroindienger's minority. They minorities when its convient or just as bad as white people when convient. There is a lot of unchecked xenophobia getting passed and hand waived away under the people are just critiquing anime. As a black person some of the stuff I've seen people get away with saying about anime is not stuff people would get away with when talking about art from other cultures. It don't matter how popular or mainstream something is racism is racism.

@@sasori2425 It's pretty much exactly this. And it's funny too because it's often the same people that whine about colonialism in everything else. And it's WHY gatekeeping was actually a good thing in general for years. Ideally you keep out tourists whose entire schtick is that they want everything that they touch to conform to their wants. So in my opinion you are absolutely correct. And I HAVE seen these types actually sh*t on asian people before as well (Verbally). Japan likes boozangas and jiggle physics. And attractive women dressed in skimpy attire. If you are a westerner and take issue with that, then don't consume the medium. It's not for you. And if your whole thing is to culturally colonize an art medium from a different culture, then YES like said above by Sasori, you ARE being xenophobic.

Why can't we have both? It is so weird that people take issue with something like attractiveness. Men like looking at women and we should not have to defend us for our sexuality. Period.

As a European, I've never understood the morals and ethics of many Americans: if limbs or heads are severed in a film or game, that's perfectly OK. But seeing a nipple elicits an outcry and a discussion that lasts for days or weeks. So I agree with you: if you don't like this or that content, don't play the game.👍

Asmons out of the loop for this one. The usual complainers (who dont play any games at all) arent allowed to criticize games like bg3 and cyberpunk for having sexuality and hot chicks because you can give the hot chicks a cawk and a deep voice. The ideology that college graduates have been indoctrinated into is in every industry. Journalism, games and comics are at the forefront, but there's also school teachers, politicians and advertising. There is no conspiracy, just a bunch of young people that were given the same worldview and moral framework along with a degree in a field they dont really care about all acting on their own. They dont get a sense of fulfillment from their career or family so they seek it out by attempting to change the world to fit the framework they were given. The interesting thing is that over the years the focus of the ideology has changed. It started with feminism in the 70's, then they added the racial component, and most recently the sexual identity component. While the different patches can conflict with each other in regards to which issue should take preference, there is one demographic, straight white men, that they universally hold to be the root cause of all the worlds problems. In order to punish, disempower and disenfranchise this demographic anything that appeals or caters to them is scorned, shamed, and eradicated or replaced.

20:00 I feel like that's common knowledge among gamers, but not among dev teams. There are probably quite a few non-charismatic people in every dev team that censors every remake that knows it's a bad idea but they aren't in that discussion or they can't convince anyone that they're right. players, as a whole, know. But AAA games aren't made by players anymore.

It made you make close bonds with other players and strive to be better.

Well, and there's also a huge gap in discrimination between game styles and genres. Its the same thing as it is with TV or anything else; live action shows will actively push the most degenerate shit to hook their audience but the moment an animated show crosses the line towards "adult" content its problematic. Baldur's Gate can fuck the bear, but God forbid an anime style game have outfits with an open midriff or -even worse- a short character.

It isn't usually based on focus groups or testing; media is not always made with a priority on what its intended consumers want... and in itself there's nothing new or automatically wrong about that. Art isn't always about conveying a message, but that's usually in there to varying degrees and both extremes of that balance get represented. It simply happens that right now there's more attention than usual - on both the creative and financial backing fronts - being given to the idea that media has a deep responsibility to change public perceptions of various social and political topics.
