That's just sad, back in my days localizers were the final goal of all translators. Can you imagine how insanely knowledgeable someone has to be in both languages to translate a joke from a different culture with different kind of humor to another one without losing it's original meaning? I even have a book about all the translation guidelines that I got from my grand dad and just reading it would make anyone realized how tough the task is for localizers. And somehow these people think they can just call themselves localizers without even having barely the qualification for it?

Right? If they just did their job properly then they would have had support from the fans if this happened. Which btw i don't think it would have, if they did their job properly, instead it eould have been a "don't fix whats not broken" situation. @@thehatter9400 The worst part of this whole debacle, is how snarky and proud of what they were doing localizers have been for years. I am a localizer in my country and this situation in America saddens me. What you said about our job is true, we do not translate word by word exactly but we don't ever change the original meaning. Some sayings in English do not translate well in my language so what do we do? We try to find the closest saying possible in our language that fits the original meaning. When I started my job as a localizer/translator, my boss told me this, "You should NEVER change the meaning of what the artist meant. The art of our job is to convey the creator's intended message from their language to ours, so fans everywhere can enjoy it just like the creator intended. I translated for a living back when I lived in Japan and when I started to point out purposeful mistranslations to people I actually found I was attacked for it more often than not; the translators doing this are definitely a problem but the ones okay with these mistranslations are also an issue. Sadly, these people aren't the only issue that translation is facing, as many companies don't even care if the translator speaks the language they are actually translating -- it's not uncommon to see a job listing on the websites of well known localization studios listing the ability to speak the language they are translating as a 'plus'. It's to the point that when a game is released in Japan first my recommendation for my viewers is to just use Google Translate to play it instead of waiting for the official English release since chances are, it will be far more accurate. Glad that Asmon is covering this as his reach is far far wider than mine and just maybe at least someone will listen.

When you take words and take them from one language to another literally that's called transliteration "Gleich geht es los." in German means. It's about to start (this is translated, or altered to better fit english) It literally says "Equal goes it loose." The entire concept of localization "making it culturally in line with the target culture" is what gives these people a free pass to rewrite anything. You don't localize a book or cartoon, you translate it. The term localization took off in videogames because the unique challenges faced by games more often than other media like translating word puzzles or signs, or fixing word wrapping which require skills and modifications besides just translation. These tasks came to be collectively referred to as localization. It stuck strongly with Japanese culture because they made many games. Many JP game translators then brought over this term to anime and manga where it was redundantly conflated with translation itself. And now you have people defending "cultural changes" in translation as a necessary part of the process when it is not. Altering the culture of dialogue is something to be done as a last resort when there's absolutely no way to translate while retaining a fair level of meaning and spirit. It's the mindset that tells you people are eating jelly donuts when there are rice balls on screen. It's the mindset that would see that problem, and think jelly donuts are not the issue, the rice balls are, and push for the scene to be redrawn with jelly donuts.

@@luckygozerSubtitle translations aren't completely great, either. A common issue with them is censoring profanity, and puff-ups and puff-downs of words. You rarely see a word translated with the proper register. The majority of the time, it's a loose approximation. And what I mean I puff-ups is that translators can overblow or underblow words that don't have that level of register. A simple example, that most people would know, is profanity. Strong profanity gets incredibly censored, so much so that characters end up sounding artificially polite, which in end of itself is mistranslation. And that doesn't even scratch the surface of what the accepted orthodox translation practices are. And trust me, maximum accuracy isn't one of them.

That's how it works unfortunately. If the langauges are from different families then paraphrasing is the way to go. Translators are sometimes even called co-authors if they deal with prose because of how much work it takes to get the meaning across, all the puns, jokes, careful character interactions (honorifics, maaan the honorifics) etc. while also delivering it in a natural way. Even then roughly 30% of the message is lost along the way. Then there is a debate about domestication vs foreignization. Unfortunately, some people take it waaaaay too far and are essentially changing enitre works to be their mouthpieces.

What surprising to me is she mentioned that the localizers don't even speak/understand japanese and only read an already translated script. Wouldn't it be better if they are also able to understand the context from the original content directly?
@Smulenify

They want to save money. Translation is done to maintain as much of the meaning as possible. Then localisation is done to change what's necessary for it to be natural and understandable. Sometimes a work might be localised for a British and an American audience for example, so they hire two localisers and both work from the same translation. Finding a native English speaker that is fluent in Japanese would cost more, and isn't really needed in most cases. The tone and style is not supposed to be changed, nor is the overall message. It can lead to some unintentional changes in meaning, but if they hire good ones it shouldn't be a problem. However these companies want to save money so they often have poor translations and then poor localisations. These localisers are intentionally changing the theme/tone/message of the content though, so them being able to speak Japanese wouldn't really change anything.

I read a lot of LitRPG books. Many of them are foreign and have been translated. There's this russian one in particular, the Disgardium series that I really like. It takes place in a dystopian corporatocracy and largely critiques government overreach and consumer culture. Once or twice a book though, there's an out of left field line bout trans people. Like this head of government/business guy has a device he uses to tell if his girlfriends actually like him or just hate him and are a spy or using him for his money. His inner monologue describes how the device works on any man or woman "or theys, as there were people who didn't identify as either man or woman, but something inbetween." Which is a jarring line because throughout the series the author doesn't shy away from what americans would consider sexist stereotypes, because russian culture is different, and apart from these one-off lines, trans identity isn't even remotely discussed. If you're a translator, your job is to translate not propagandize. Your one job, literally the only thing required of your position is to convey the author's intention.

IMO localizing is more straight forward than what asmon is hinting at... what I mean is for example back in the day fansubs had two types of translators. "Accurate" (translate exactly), and "Localized" (convert the meaning to the best western counterpart). But the thing is when you localize you don't just change the meaning complely, you need to translate to something that makes sense. And yes, for stuff like FLCL localizers can have quite a bit of flex, but it has to make sense... For example let me give you an example in one fansubbed anime the translate went something like this: ### Accurate Fansub Translation ### "When the ogres away the demons will play" > and then a "translation note will pop up, or be shown at the end of the episode, basically explaining what it meant" ### Western Localized Fansub Translation ### "When the cats away the mice will play" > and no translation will be given Both the above are fine with me. What these people here are doing is changing the entire meaning to something complely different... it's more like a "comedic re-dubbed episode" but they are only changing a few scenes instead of everything....

all language is context dependent. a large portion of the innovation between the last two iterations of GPT, for example, is entirely related to context parsing. predictive text models aren't what you'd use for a translation job, but that isn't to say the framework isn't being currently built to manage the EXACT tasks required to successfully translate text. there's an incredible demand for it, and it's inevitable that it will be built well enough to be reliable. @@ancillarity edit: but yes, clearly hiring human translators who have actual integrity to completing the task accurately is the present-day bare minimum one would hopefully expect out of a company. Subbed meanwhile? you get the original one and if you don't know the language (aka. can listen instead of having to read) you will enjoy it far more than that mess of dubs that you cannot trust in first place to be truthful because of stuff like this happening, and this has been a problem for a long long time if people have even paid attention to anime. The moment when the abridged stuff on youtube has same value of "professional dubs" is just, why the hell are you watching the dub then? you could as well just watch the abridged one at that point, at least it'd be funny right? you can just watch your anime without being told about patriarchy somehow affecting a freaking goddess who's so far beyond the mere mortals that they've probably created that patriarchy in first place just to fuck with nutcases who bring the goddess so much drama that they don't even have to make a soap opera, they could just visualise these twitter wars and people would be ready with popcorn in hand to watch these dramas.

It's really not a new phenomenon. When I was a little girl, I felt betrayed when I learned that my favorite scene in my favorite game of the time was totally mistranslated. In the end of FF10, in the original Japanese version of the game, Yuna says 'Thank you' in a very subtle way to Tidus. In the version I played as a kid (the English version), Yuna says 'I love you' instead... It totally changes the meaning of that entire scene from a subtle unspoken feeling full of frustration and delicate emotions to some basic rom-com type thing. When I realized what they did, I decided to start learning Japanese in order to avoid having my beloved entertainment tainted by idiots. Now I'm fluent and can watch all that Japanese content directly raw. I would recommend anime fans to start learning Japanese and stop relying on these western censors.

FF12 uses modern English, but with a formal Victorian-esque prose that's pretty reminiscent of high-fantasy fiction like Tolkien's books. If you don't like this style of prose, then fine, that's your preference. But calling it a bad localization is a huge stretch. They used formal speech for aristocrats and colloquial speech for commoners. They used different accents to represent different nationalities. To make things worse for localizers, parallel to the usage of AI in translations, there's also a petition going around to get Japanese companies to introduce a Code of Ethics to the localization industry. Here's the title of the petition: "Introduce A Code of Ethics for Localization of Japanese Media・ローカライゼーションの倫理規定"

I mean it makes a lot of sense .. if someone puts a lot of time and effort into creating an anime or manga im sure they dont want their work associated or missused just to push some agenda

They should also take these localizers to court for damaging company property and reputation.

@@viedralavinova8266 I agree with the sentiment, but I think it wouldn't be financially viable. You would have to prove in court that these changes have prevented the company from making sales in high enough volumes to justify a lawsuit, and most of that would be just speculation and likely dismissed by the judicial system. The best way to damage those lolcowlizers would be to just kick them out of the industry and laugh at them. Damaging their egos will be far more terrifying for them than the courtrooms.

One of my favorite childhood tale book from an Italian writer has been re-released and I was overjoyed to get a fresh copy instead of the torn and patchy one for my son. The happiness was short-lived as the "translator" completely turned the story inside-out to fit the demands of modern sensibility. Thought that was a one-off event but it's apparently much more widespread than I believed.

Man if I were lucky enough to work with an anime studio in any capacity or just be part of something that I genuinely love I would never dream of fucking it up like that. These people are so crazy.

The main problem is that nowadays they think this is their project. They think they have to change them so it's their work. Thats so arrogant and I am happy that they get reality checked.
