Hi from Japan. Some of the people pointed out saying "Japan does not care". Yes we do, Anime/Manga is one of our biggest exports and "cultural national treasures". My partner and I use Crunchyroll to watch anime with English subtitles so she can improve her English and we're kinda pissed about the woke translators controversy and the west trying to project the woke mindset into our culture. People can argue that it's a cartoon yes, but it's still a Japanese product. We take a lot of pride in the things we create whether that is a physical or digital product, we care a lot about the brand and how our products are perceived by other people. Trust me, one bad apple is enough to change a company's workflow or mindset, so I don't blame companies wanting to use AI to reduce "human errors". Zack is right that we are very conservative. So imagine Japanese SUB companies translating woke American drama and twisted translations to sound more conservative. Wouldn't that create some big controversy? As for Japanese companies being so difficult to work or collaborate with, imagine you have a child and you have to send your child to boarding school. Wouldn't you want to make sure that your child is in absolute good hands so you don't have anything to worry about? Japanese companies want to make sure that their products are in good hands and suffer no brand damages. And lastly, I fail to understand how a person like Jamie Marchi is in her current job position. You don't even speak or understand Japanese nor do you show any effort to understanding our cultural differences. Even if you are not a translator, how on earth can you even validate approve other people's translations? Makes no sense at all.

A lot of people are also asking the same question as to why she and other people like her have the job at all in the first place. My biggest guess is they had friends in high places that allowed them to steal and leech off in these positions. Or they simply want to inject their malicious agendas into other people's hobbies.

I don't know if this will help or not, but maybe contacting Ken Akamatsu and getting some real publicity around this issue will do something. You probably already know this, but Ken Akamatsu was the guy who wrote Love Hina, and he is running for public office in Japan. I used to be one of those people who mistakenly believed that Japan does not care. I have since learned that they very much do care, and I'm very happy to hear that. Thank you for letting us know what's going on and for clarifying for us how Japanese people see this issue.

"Japan doesn't care" I am Japanese. There is a lot of talk about this on X by Japanese people including people in the anime and manga industry. These things are a big part of our culture and it is our biggest cultural export. To be misrepresenting our anime and manga in such a way reflects poorly on our culture and reduces the perceived quality. Sorry if I am not making sense, I am trying to say Japan does have people that care, and we have good reasons to care. Thank you for reading. 読んでくれありがとうございました。

Japanese anime influences a LOT of western people. The problem with dub is getting bad because, anytime I see a dub fan here, they are ALWAYS hyper political, they look goofy, and they always follow radical left politics. I agree with the AI idea, us Japanese sub fans don't want Japanese culture and art to be disgraced either.
@daranae

@@raijuko I feel like English dubs are very bad and reflect poorly on anime. Imagine watching Simpsons or Family Guy where the character all talk like character from anime dub. It would sound bad, yes? Japanese anime voices are like cartoons, even serious drama will have voices like a cartoon. The voice quality in English dub is poor.

@@raijuko What I don't understand is the process, and where in it people just went "do whatever", when dubbing something. I've noticed this with songs and movies too from my own language when translated to english. Japanese media is VERY popular where I'm from (manga more than anime, but they are both treated with a lot of care). Translators do the work on a rough draft then work hand in hand with the actors and voice coaches and producers to adapt the flow during recording sessions (for the purpose of making the animation fit the wording, provide understandable context that might be locked by culture etc). The kind of stuff that happens in the US would not fly here at all. Not even because of fan backlash, but because at the production level, nobody would think that what they are dubbing is just a free-use template rather than a complete work of art.

A lot of us care. It's these few people that get control that want to change stuff for whatever reasoning they have. They did One Piece dirty on 4Kids network which made me not watch it for years because how stupid they made it look and sound. Voice sounded like people struggling to talk, everything was censored to the point where people used water guns and pointed their figures, bad lip sync and editing, and they cut out so much that a lot of the scenes were views of the oceans or landscape. This is why One Piece did so poor in America. That's one of the reasons some of these anime do so bad over here in America. I get some things got to change, but it's like they change everything about it than wonder why it does so poor.

This woman is the main reason why I started to hate dubs. Her lines are used and her friends are always casted as the main cast. They purposely change the lines to cringe worthy levels. Luckily the subs usually don't reflect the dub (sometimes they do) but when that happens, I look for fan subs instead. I've said this before, Funimation acts like a cult. You either agree with their ideals, or you're horrible for the industry and must be removed. I think many upcoming voice actors are denied chances because they don't fit in with these 40 yr old high schoolers not liking the new kids. Most of the cast act like this (not all). Seriously if you watch Japanese subs, the voice actors are constantly seeking new talent! Flip side the Funimation (now crunchyroll dubs) cult deny any new talent and always favor certain people to the main cast of popular anime. Its ridiculous. I'm glad this is finally being addressed as an anime fan, I cant believe how long it flown under the radar. A lot of these main cast voice actors are big babies too, the moment they are criticized they lash out like she did on tick tock. Its disgusting, own up to your own faults. You're adults with a job, if you don't like doing your job properly, struggle like the rest of animators do and create your own show and see how well you do! Stop forcing it on us with someone's creative narrative and story!! I started to hate her personally when she responded with the line that got us here. Sop westernizing the Japanese culture, its an amazing place! I lived there for 2 years. The people and culture are amazing and the anime industry could inspire others to go. I highly recommend it too, It was an amazing experience!

There was a manga where the entire crux of the story was that the main character was a man dressing up as a girl. They were not trans, they did not think they were a girl, they just liked to cross-dress. The localizers reinterpreted pretty much the entire context and wrote the main character as a trans girl. This completely changes the context of the entire story. The Japanese company producing it had to discontinue the original print and issue a corrected version of the manga. This shit has cost people a lot of money and it's been largely ignored for a long time. The dragon maid thing isn't the only thing, it's just the easiest to understand and one of the more egregious examples. It's a touchpoint to get you to understand the problem. It is most certainly not the ONLY problem case.

Katrina got some pretty big coverage when it all went down cause she said that she knew the localizer who did this and that they worked very hard on it and consulted with trans people to make sure it was okay to put out the localization like it was done....thinking that was a GOOD thing to say considering the CREATOR of the series is the one who complained, it's one thing when it's people like the fans who complain and they can just pull the kinda crap you see shown in this vid, it's another story entirely when the creator of the series they are localizing complains to the publishing company.

I just looked into the manga referred to in this comment... And it's a BL manga by all definitions. By translating it as the dude's friend is transitioning into a girl, it completely evaporates an ENTIRE TAG OF THE MANGA. These localizers need their jobs stripped away, this is ridiculous. If I were the author of the work, I would be beyond furious. If people are being paid for something, they should do it right. If someone wants their trans girl x best friend story, then they write it themselves, not change someone's hardwork. @@_Just_John thats somewhat fair if its just a translation issue though. A lot of the time a literal translation from japanese to english doesnt quite make sense, so minor adjustments have to be made to keep it readable. The original message and intentions of the source material should still be maintained though. If a localising company is doing the latter part instead of the former part then thats when i and many others take issue with it. At that point the ghost stories english dub has as much integrity as anything the localisation company puts out, thats to say none at all. They do these cons virtually all year long because they make a ton of cash from it, usually charging $45-60 a pop for selfies and around the same for autographs, so they're constantly inundated in it. I've never once seen someone come up to them at a con and ask a really critical question, definitely not at their tables and not even at the Q&A's. You can tell, even the guy bringing it up apologized to her and said it was unfair, even though it's totally justified to have issues with localization that is so far away from the original work. I worked as part of the French localization team in Tokyo for various video game projects over a span of 3 years. The typical workflow involved the following steps: 1) The translator received the original Japanese text, requiring fluency in spoken and written Japanese. The task was to translate it as closely as possible to the original, respecting its nuances. Once completed, it was sent to the localization team. 2) The localization team then reviewed the translator's work, addressing issues such as grammar, spelling mistakes, words omitted, or any obvious mistranslations. 3) Each problem identified was reported back to the translator, who had the authority to decide whether modifications were necessary. Ultimately, the client or studio made the final decision, though many Japanese clients, often not fluent in English, trusted the expertise of the translator or localization. Generally, if players or viewers did not raise concerns about a translation, it was considered successful, signifying no apparent issues. Conversely, reports of translation bugs or complaints were treated seriously in Japan, as customer satisfaction held paramount importance. It's worth noting that Japan differs significantly from America and Europe for all those wokeness/patriarchal stuff. For instance, in Japan, people may straightforwardly comment on someone's weight straight on the face. Admittedly, some workers in the industry, particularly foreigners, tend to inject a certain level of "wokeness" into their translations. While this often goes unnoticed due to the leniency of team managers (also foreigners), it's not a prevalent concern in Japan because they just don't know the extend of this problem outside Japan. Even as a small player in the localization process, one can subtly influence text with personal political views. The surprising aspect is that, in this context, this woman with no proficiency in Japanese seems to wield significant influence over the final text. This suggests that her standing in the industry affords her a level of autonomy that allowed her to do that.

As an ex-translator of 15 years, I would always contact the author/customer to try to clear the intended meaning in cases where the source text was too vague for the target language, and to try find the most appropriate localization in cases where the source text would simply not work for the target audience in the target language. And if there was no possibility of clearing these up with the author/customer, the professional thing to do would always be to stay as faithful to the original text as possible while retaining the spirit of the original meaning. It would have never occurred to me to change something just because I didn't agree with it, didn't like it or wanted to insert my own stuff, whether maliciously or not. Marchi comes across as a narcissistic hack, which would explain the inflated ego and victim complex. I’m now tempted to rewatch in the original Japense and just stop watching the dub because if they are changing stuff this much I’d be angry. I watch the show because of the original creators not because some voice actors adds their political slant to it. What do you think? Do they know what’s going on or I’m guessing if they know now do you think the studio over here is hearing about it and getting an addendum to the contract that this won’t be allowed any more?

I actually like that there has been a kind of spotlight on a lot of issues in the creative media industry as of late. From the strikes from screenwriters to actors to this and other things that have been coming out over the last few months and recent years even. I remember when my sister started out during her college days and was horribly mistreated by the CEO of the studio where she interned (really messed up shit, some examples including, but not limited to: forbidding her to work on sets because she was a woman, having the interns stay back till almost midnight because he found 2 bread crumbs in a room and had them deep clean the whole studio for it, *literally trying to climb over someone IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT on the highway at 140 km/h because the intern wasn't fast enough for him* , almost running over an old lady on the street while my sister was in the passengers seat so she had to grab his wheel... which she got screamed at for for nearly 10 minutes afterwards, shitting on his customers, deliberately making bad products for clients he didn't like, etc.). She didn't say anything about it, even though she was miserable for MONTHS. Because she was SCARED that he'd slander her infront of other studios effectively crushing her career before it had even started. This industry is terribly regulated, terribly protected and many don't talk about it on a larger scale, either because they are scared of losing their jobs or just simply because they are used to not being paid any attention to and to being able to do what they want without having to take responsibility for it, among many other reasons of course. But all these voices deserve to be heard, one way or another. And personally I think it's important, although that might also be because I have a family member in that industry actively being influenced by it every day. Be it because the industry mistreats them or because they are so narcissistic that they manage to highlight a whole other cesspool part of the industry where they are active contributors to breech of trust and misrepresentation of the material of others. Or the blatant mistreatment of other workers in their industry. This is another example of it. It's not just about a word, it's about a breech of trust towards the studios working on the original material, the artist, the original screen writers, directors and the culture surrounding the respective works. It's about showing respect for other people working in the same industry as you, albeit in a different language. There is none of that here. There should be. It might not be the most pressing matter in the world, especially now. But it deserves to be talked about. Cause it's an issue and has been for a long time, and it's been majorly overlooked for that exact reason. So shining a light on stuff like this once and again isn't a bad thing.

She is adressing the fact that due to demands from other she changed clothes in both lines. Does this look like distort ? Faking no, the intention is the same. For a political insertion from your side that would have distort the original work, she would have said "I thought i looked like a slut, so now i wear more normal clothes". Here is a distortion by political belief. It came as a realisation from herself instead of social pressure. Jamie Marchi literally has no right to throw shade at anyone over charities. A few years ago during the Vic Mignogna situation she made one of the biggest virtue signaling posts and tried getting people to donate to a charity that didn’t exist. Now I don’t believe she knew that at the time but it was the funniest thing especially with the message she typed with it. People looked into it because the name alone sounded made up.

I live in Japan. I've worked in the translation/localization industry. 44:20 If the translation is wrong she's in trouble. If the translation is wrong on purpose she's in big trouble! If the translation is wrong, on purpose, and promoting an unshared political bent or ideology then she'll be blacklisted. I would keep in mind tho that the Japanese company will almost always employ bilingual staff required to approve or require changes before the script is voiced. If it made it through those rounds of checks and revisions then consumer complaints aren't likely to be considered - unless it becomes a very large issue - like in a common newspaper or two here in Japan inking the problems for all to see.

Not only what the author of the video said, but when you do make a clear effort to simply illuminate a situation for those mistaken who have decided on emphatic ignorance, it immediately puts the ego of these people on the table... So now the need to double down is exponentially increased. I KNOW at least some out there have come across situations when you have had someone dead-to-rights on an issue (having all citations and proof right at hand). Then they act like they were merely trolling the whole time or SOMETHING to save their egos. When these types of things occur, I stop and silently wonder to myself, "How can I go the rest of my life never having to meet or interact with one of you again?" This would truly make my life a happy one. I have a theory that these types may seriously ruin existence more than one may imagin at a glance. Such fundamentally dishonest egocentricism ripples and reverberates. Definite truth: The first person to personally insult another person is almost always the one with the weaker point to make. The spiritual truth of matters are paramount. The common slanderous personal judgments and propaganda are pretty irritating to endure. It seems these things are merely designed to emotionally lead the brainless mob.

As a Japanese national, it doesn't surprise me one bit that people like her are in positions to insert her ideology into her work/job. Localization/translator field outside of medical and scientific fields are full of incompetent and often under-qualified people. People like her got a foothold in the anime localization field simply because she was early to the sector and there weren't many people doing it professionally. Another problem is that despite growing interest in Japanese language, most people don't understand English and Japanese at a proficient level in many of the industries you think would have proper oversight. I currently work for European company with a Canadian client but I'm based in Japan. I translate internal documentation and answer Japanese users all the time but I have no one to answer to when it comes to my use of Japanese. I've always depended on DeepL, it seems to be the most accurate to get my point across when talking to Japanese. As machine translation improves, so will people's trust in it. That could be both a good thing and a bad thing. Secondly, I've noticed that as time has gone by, and the world is more connected than ever by the internet, more Japanese are learning English. It's not because of school, watching foreign movies or TV, or special English classes, but thanks to the internet. Despite being such a horrible year of the pandemic, 2020 was the year I saw a massive jump in Japanese appearing and debut as independent Vtubers here on KZbin, and they realize they have the potential for having an international audience. That alone has give many Japanese the courage and motivation to learn English.

As someone who has been studying Japanese for a few years I can attest to the fact that translators often, for absolutely no reason, change the lines in all sorts of media. It's actually been quite a hindrance for me because the way you learn a language is to consume a lot of native material, so when I would watch a video or something and, as a very simplistic example, hear the person say "Run!" and see the English translation as "Take cover!" I'm always second guessing myself. Did I hear that right? Is my understanding of the word wrong? So here I am wasting time through shitty translations to figure out if I'm going crazy or not when the translators could have just translated it properly in the first place. Usually it's pretty minor like in my example, but sometimes it can be rather major. I went and saw Godzilla Minus One because it's in Japanese and there were a lot of questionable translations and one that actually kinda ticked me off at the end. Big defining point at the end of the movie and, because of the way they translated it, it's completely lost.

Yea but think of the kids.... Is it better to get more languaged media out there or to translate it properly??? It's a shame they feel like they get liberties when they purchase the product but that is my fear. If this is the only way to get Japanese or any other outside language content into my life without learning the language then that is the baggage I have to take with the content.
@icebalm
@icebalm 11 ай бұрын
@@deadbeatonthemooneatingkfp8500 If it's not translated properly then it's not the Japanese content, it's something else. I mean, it's not like we have to have shitty translations or no translations at all. Like I said, a lot of these incorrect translations are done for absolutely no reason, it would actually take less time to do them properly. Most of these translations are the translator trying to be creative and putting their own "mark" on the work when that is not their job. Japanese is such a different language that it isn't always possible to literally translate and some interpretation must be done but I am not talking about those instances. I'm talking about instances where the translator obviously chose to use words that were similar but not what was originally intended.
@zanmaru139
@zanmaru139 11 ай бұрын
Problem with your example is it's so simplistic and innocent that, depending on the context, both statements are rough analogs and you know, maybe "take cover" matched the lip movements better? Translation isn't an exact science and there's a difference between what the "woke" lady is doing vs capturing the intent of what's being said without a 100% literal translation that can come off as dry and awkward. It's a fine line and a good translator will respect that line.

@@zanmaru139 Dude, how would I know what the Japanese was if it was a dub? Subtitles don't match up with lip movements. I picked a simple example on purpose. There is no reason why you should translate a Japanese soldier saying 逃げろ as "take cover". You can translate it as "run!" "run away!" "flee!" or even "get out of here!" but "take cover" makes no fucking sense. Take cover would be something like 隠れろ, it's a completely different word and meaning, and my point was that as someone who is learning the language translators take a lot of liberties with Japanese when they don't have to.

One thing that I think a lot of people are missing in this debate is the history of localization of anime. In the 1970s and 1980s western companies animation budgets were getting out of hand so a lot of companies would go to japan to license footage from anime and then cut up that footage to make shows like robotech and power rangers...These show would have entirely western plots and would often eclipse the original anime. Many of these companies were extreme letegious and tried to block the anime they licensed from reaching audiences outside of japan. This is part of why japan is so angry about one translator doing something similar.

@@toomanyaccounts It's one of the rare success stories of spliced anime from back in the day...much like how Yugioh players in Japan are rather fond of the Western version artwork of "Monster Reborn". But now that we're not in the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s, fans want it to be as close to the original Japanese as they can get it while understanding that some things don't translate well between the two countries. One series I read "Dragons Rioting" would print context on the last couple of pages or on the inside of the back cover for jokes that didn't cross over or references Western readers may not understand. Also there's a rather infamous case of a change in a BIG name anime in the case of DBZ. In the "Ocean Dub" as it's called (due to who did the dubbing) Vegeta says that Goku's father was a weak warrior but a 'brilliant scientist" and claimed he was the one behind the Power Ball they used to transform on planets with no moons. This was a rather obvious nod to Superman...who shares a similar origin story of being an alien with superpowers from a destroyed planet and largely extinct race. This was later taken out by the next group that did the dubbing but the infamous "ally to good, nightmare to you" speech to Frieza on Namek was a change to make him seem more heroic versus the original Japanese.

For decades, anime was perceived as culturally worthless cartoons for kids and autistic weebs. Western producers were only buying the broadcasting rights from ages-old anime to act as a filler, and barely paying a minuscule VA studio. It wasn't uncommon for VAs back then to voice multiple characters and improvise lines on the spot, or leave botched recording on the final cut. In that context, nobody on the western side cared about the quality of the product - not the producer signing the rights, not the TV guy filling up the schedule with random episodes, not the advertisers, not the consumers paying for the TV and cable subscription. In such an environment, it makes sense that people like her would stick around: while she wasn't getting paid huge money, she would comfort herself by feeding her ego, about making these works "her own", as well as having power and influence over the kids and "nerds" watching these shows. The fact that anime is serious money now, and a major part of western culture, frightens her and is the main reason why she is panicking: she is losing her grip on the world that used to be her own little personal domain - where she was able to do whatever she wanted, as long as she sent her lines before the deadline. Globally, we're seeing this as AI taking over VA - but for her, it's mainstream culture ending her reign over a neglected niche.

Truth is it's not that Japan doesn't care, it's mostly that they don't want to get involved in something they have no grasp in, they leave it to the American side of their industry/company to do their job for THEIR audience, localization of video games/manga/anime this past decade has devolved and ruined many franchises either from a series or a one off game due to localization. A lot of games especially have straight up just removed or changed content so much that the meaning of said content is just lost from the original medium, here's some game examples I can think of: Fire Emblem series (from Awakening onwards), 13 sentinels, NEO the world ends with you, Samurai Maiden, etc. There's a few more but mostly are Nintendo and Sony products.....shocker.
