I am an old lady (this month 74) but I was always very fond of good shoes. I was born after the Second Wold War in south east Europe and during my childhood I was wearing something ugly and uncomfortably that they called "shoes". It was made of bad materials and with bad skills. It was considered quite normal to have bloody blisters on your feet if you wear new shoes. During the winter, they soaked wet and become hard as hardboard when dried. I was very happy when in my teenage years got a pair of beautiful Italian shoes. The first time in my life I was able to wear shoes without blisters, very comfortable and very beautiful. That was the beginning of my love story with shoes and later, as adult, I made a big collection of beautiful Italian shoes. I took very good care of them. I kept them on wooden forms, cleaned and polished them almost every day and gave them to be repaired to the good cobblers. They have been real masters of their trade and every fixing was done fully professional, like this video. Unfortunately, at the beginning of eighties, many of them closed their business due to the lack of clients. The era of cheap plastic shoes began and this cheap and ugly shoes were not worth of any investment in money or labor. What a shame! The time changes, fashion changes, people changes, but I am happy that real artisans are still existing.

@@leticia9281 Thank you for your kind comment. Unfortunately, I am not anymore able to wear my beloved Italian shoes. Ten years ago I had serious problems with my legs and feet and turned to the sneakers and slippers. It was clear that I have to do something with my shoes. It was out of question to put them into the garbage. I decide to give them to someone who can wear them and enjoy wearing them. Close to my flat lived a lady, younger than myself, who wore the same size. She was nice person, hard working women devoted to her children and family. She never had a pleasure to buy something expensive and nice for herself because it was always more important to buy something for children or family. So, I took few big cardboard boxes, put all my beloved shoes in, together with wooden forms, brushes, special clothes for shinning and other stuff, and gave it to her. She was very surprised and grateful. She wore my shoes for years (some are still alive and in use) and kept telling me that my gift was real miracle to her because she never experienced such comfort and beauty. I am glad that my story had a nice ending and that my shoes gave pleasure to the other person.

My grandfather was a cobbler and boot maker and really cared for people's shoes and boots. He came from an era where people didn't throw shoes away but rather mended them. I used to love watching him work and he mended belt and ladies handbags there were no man made materials only leather. I still remember the smell of the leathers and glue it brings back many happy memories

These videos also educate us about different ways of living in different countries. I am from India. It is very common in my country to get a shoe repaired from a cobbler. An average person buys average shoes and gets them repaired. From most comments I think this does not happen in most countries. But fast fashion is reaching everywhere. Many young people find it embarrassing to get things repaired. I hope this culture of getting things repaired and reusing them will never get lost.

Same here in México, so many stores closing down cause younger generations are getting used to a lot of cheap items that are easy to throw away rather than a small amount of good items that will work for life as long as you take care of them and repair if needed.

I am Canadian living in Italy. Here the neighborhood cobbler is very busy. I buy second hand good shoes and ask him to repair little things or I bring him my old shoe that he gives a new life. The same with the electrician in his tiny shop. He is very busy repairing chandelier and other electric appliances that where well made and still can be repaired. The sewing machine repair man...The last example is the copper artisan in the old town. He repairs and re-tin our copper pots and pans. He was telling me that if the nephew is not taking over he will have to close shop when he will retire.

This is so inspiring and beautiful. I hope is the younger generations don't settle for fast fashion and keep on repairing things. There's such magic to it. I recently brought back to life an old pair of converse who were used for 3 years already. The canvas color was washed out so i painted them and a design on them. The rubber is still okay to wear, so just got them some new years of life. I hope it spreads. Even not so fancy shoes can be used for more than people would think.

I want to learn these skills. When I take my shoes to the cobbler for repair, the very practical employee always questions if it’s worth the labor costs vs the original cost of the shoes. I tell him, it’s about using the shoes until they’re completely done. It’s so environmentally friendly to repair vs discard. Also, if an animal has died for me to wear leather shoes, I owe it to the animal to get as much life out of those shoes as I can.

@@justagirl8757 no not at all! I mean not in my country at least, lol. I recently splurged on heavily discounted second hand designer on Vestiaire Collective, got it re-soled and it is a small fraction of the cost of the shoes. After the work, the total spent still a fraction of what other ppl paid the shoes brand new for. I'm so so happy! Lol.

really satisfying to watch. if only we'd all restore our shoes and valued items there would be less waste in this world and it makes us appreciate what we buy and own more.

It's because the restoration is probably worth the same if not more than the shoes themselves.

Keep posting these videos to inspire people to save and take care of their beautiful shoes instead of throwing them away. The cost of the repairs is a fraction of the cost for a pair of replacement shoes and worth every penny.

But watching this, I have such a newfound respect and admiration for cobblers and their skill. I will never again complain about what they charge. This is a true talent.
