Just need to make a correction for Ireland, so that people don't become misinformed by this author: once an independent island, then England invaded and colonised us, then through 800 years of war we got our independence back again (except for. a few counties called Northern Ireland) NOT what the book says, of course. This book was likely written by a Brit because they are the only people who would say this AND use the term 'Southern Ireland' (there's no such place 😆). If you say Southern Ireland here you'll get a lot of confused looks and someone saying '....Cork?!'.😁
@Loracanne Жыл бұрын
Also, saying people are 'mainly Protestant' in Northern Ireland couldn't be more wrong. Considering the trouble that has caused over the years you would think people would be careful about getting it wrong.
@jsmally83 Жыл бұрын
I think we can make the basic assumption it was written by an American, not least because it uses American terms such 'soccer' and 'cell phone', as well as Americanised spellings.
@HeartfireAce21 Жыл бұрын
I don’t mean to offend, but is it not logical to say Southern Ireland, as opposed to Northern Ireland?
@stevejohn60968 ай бұрын
@@LoracanneI think you can give her a break. Considering the 2011 census still had the number of people identify as protestant outweighing Catholic by 48.4% to 45.1%. This has only change within the past few years with the 2021 census. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this book was created before then.

The Harlech castle is quite hard for people who can’t speak Welsh but I’ll try my best to help you how to say it so the HAR part is literally how you say it HAR then LE you say that how you would like saying LET but just the LE then the CH you say it with the back of your mouth like your trying to get flem up from your throat then put it all together HAR LE CH hope you get it Welsh is one of the hardest languages to learn and pronounce

I love how every media tries to avoid talking about Eastern-Europe and the Balkans, and only talking about it when it starts to become obvious. 😆😆 Especially walking around Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia and such.

The mountains down the middle of England are pronounced pe-NINEs, with nine as in the number, but tbh I can totally see where you’re coming from And Harlech is pronounced HAA-lech (don’t know how to transcribe the grating noise made at the back of the throat, same as the Scottish pronunciation of Loch - a sound the Celtic languages have but not really Germanic as far as I’m aware), but again the approach was hardly incorrect in principle

As someone who lives within viewing distance of the Pennines, I’ve always heard it pronounced pen-ines (ines rhyming with spines)

We also say soccer in Australia. Perhaps it’s to differentiate it from Aussie Rules football (or just “the footy” for short). I don’t follow any sports that don’t have four wheels and an engine, but I assume America has their own version of non-soccer football.

Loving all the vids recently. In Welsh ‘ch’ is a glottal sound, meaning the ‘ch’ on the end of Harlech is pronounced like the Scots pronounce ‘loch’. Also Pennines is pronounced Pen-nines. Da iawn, keep ‘em coming ❤️ 🏴

Also not that you asked; the proper name for Mount Snowdon is Yr Wyddfa (pronounced ur-with-va), Snowdon being an anglicised name for it.
