The Australian political system is known as the "Washminster" system, as it's a mixture of Washington (USA) and Westminster (UK) systems. But it does have some really peculiar attributes, like being preferential rather than first-past-the-post and you risk a $20 fine if you don't vote. And if you don't pay that fine and can't provide a good reason with supporting evidence (like a doctor's certificate) for why you didn't vote, you risk a criminal conviction. It does seem chaotic, but it becomes a pretty fun day for everyone. We just go to our local school, and you get your democracy sausage afterwards which raises money for the school or a local charity. You can also vote early (lke 4 million people have this year) if you're going to be working or overseas.

Top video, very informative to see from a British point of view. And I thought we had some weird parties standing!
@tdb79925 жыл бұрын
Because we have preferential and compulsory voting, we always end up with a lot of weird tiny parties getting into the Senate. A few parliaments ago a lot of the smaller parties got in and held the balance of power so they became king-makers, and they were really strange parties like "the motoring enthusiasts party" and "the fishers and shooters party", ones that no one had ever heard of and only got a tiny handful of votes. Our conservative party are called the Liberals too, just to really confuse foreigners. And Labour is called Labor as when they were founded it was believed that Australia would eventually adopt American spelling although the massive cultural connection to the UK was so strong that changing our official spelling was never even really considered. The democracy sausage is probably the best thing about election day, although I opted for a bacon and egg roll at my polling station this morning.

The only countries with really different voting process is the countries that have less freedoms (like Russia, china, iran etc) And the US is similar to Australia but it's a actually unique because we have state and local elections on top of federal elections. A good way to thing of it is that the federal government creates laws everyone has to follow, the states have to follow federal laws but can make their own laws and local areas can create their own laws but have to follow state and federal laws on top of local laws lol. Local cities have a mayor or manager and a council, states have a governor as well as a house and Senate, and the federal government has all of those as well. So the us is has quite a lot of positions to fill , meaning alot of elections (though Americans actually have a really low voter turnout)

The UK voting system is a bit less complicated. You vote for a local MP, using a first past the post process, and that then translates to a “seat” in the House of Commons, and then the party with the most seats forms a government if they have an obvious majority. If not, they can form a coalition with another party so they gain a majority, however the winning party has to have permission to form a government from the Monarch in this situation. There is also much much less of a choice on the spectrum in the UK, it’s really a two party system here with Labour (left wing) and the Conservative (right wing, currently the majority), however we have a few minor parties on both sides of the spectrum too.
@keelanobrien60185 жыл бұрын
Indeed, it is simpler, although less democratic. Discounting the vote of all but the first candidate past the post does not exactly champion democracy.
@OpticPancakeZz5 жыл бұрын

@tablechums46275 жыл бұрын
It's used when someone just numbers 1 to 9, etc in the order from top to bottom as it appears on the sheet. It's called a donkey vote because it associated with people who just don't care about voting and only do it cause its mandatory. The government still has to count it though because it is still a legitimate vote (someone could actually have genuinely voted in that order).

Liberal in Australia means something different to the rest of the world. The Liberal party in Australia is actually a Tory party as the term Liberal is in reference to economic Liberalism. Technically most people know them as “the coalition” as they’re actually joint government between the Liberal and National party’s. The difference being mainly the Nationals hold seats in regional areas whilst the Liberals hold seats in urban areas.

Yes, I usually do. Unfortunately this time I missed out. However, there is always a sausage sizzle at Bunnings (big hardware store / chain) on the weekends!

@@AussieAsmrMan Yeah I know all about it! I'm studying up because I aspire to immigrate to Australia. Thank you for the videos you make :)

I think half of these views are mine for the last months 😅😅 i hear it every day almost. Chewing gum rules! Till now never have noticed the Australian accent, but you introduce me to it and I absolutely love it. And it was very creative idea to talk about politics (maybe not a popular theme in the asmr world but a wonderful niche)
