Fun fact: in Finland, most people speak Finnish, but on the autonomous island of Åland, most people speak Swedish. Of course a lot of people speak both at least a little since both languages are mandatory at school.

Hello, thank you for the lovely video of the history and geography of Finland. I just have one note at around 28:00 minutes in the video, there was talking about Tarja Halonen which was our president for two full terms, where she did not resign from. She served 12-years honourably as the first Finnish female president. There was an prime minister tho, who was the first female head of government and she did resign. Anneli Jätteenmäki formed her government on march 25th of 2003 and it collapsed at the 16th of April the same year, due to lack of trust in the parliament. Tarja Halonen is still active in humanitarian causes and she has been since her career began. Notably she was the head of an association (SETA) that fought to protect and better the rights of LGTBQ+ citizens from 1980-81. She served as the foreign minister in the 90’s before her presidency and she was known for being very hard on the patriarchs who tried to harass or belittle her. So she had an iron reputation. She stepped into the office of the President of the Republic on the 1st of march in the year 2000. Which is also the day I was born. Thank you again for a lovely video and greetings from Helsinki! 🫶🏻

But she is still scandalously soviet, Putin and communist symphatizer. Even to level that Angela Merkel would not shake her hand. Now lookin back. Shes one of the bad guys in history, we just tought good in the different times when we were just too naive.

32:53 Hi! Just wanted to point out that this is incorrect, although a very common misunderstanding about finnish schools. Only very small children (6-10yo) have the short days. And everyone has tests pretty much as soon as they start school. Our education system is good but not that level of relaxed. Especially in secondary education the days get a lot longer and tests are as common as anywhere else. For example in my case a year ago, the monday on my schedule was from 8.20 to 17.00 and at the end of that schedule period (which lasts a little over a month) we had the test week where we do the final test from each course we have. So I had about 6 tests in that one week. Of course I'm in lukio so it's a little different depending on how old you are, or if you go to vocational school instead after the 9th grade.

Character from the Kalevala: Väinämöinen 🎶 Runeberg is the national poet, but didn’t actually write the Kalevala. Elias Lönnrot collected the poems from the Finnish people for the Kalevala and then edited it into a coherent story.

What a great video, such a brilliant explanation of finish history. Could you provide more details regarding what you said about the Romans (and ancient swedish sources) describing the finish as scary? In particular which Roman author wrote about them. Thank you, i really enjoyed your video.

Correction. Most of the 180k islands are in the lakes. And Åland in Finnish is Ahvenanmaa.

Here to correct you: The lapland war started because the soviets wanted to get the nazis out of Finlands territory in exchange for the Moscow peace treaty. Also the germans were really cooperative with the finns and they left their territory in peace, but there was a due date to which the germans had to be out of finlands territory. Of course the germans didn't get out in time and the finns had to start fighting against them. Being forced by the soviets obviously. A great video though!

Finland has been my most favoured country, on and off, for a long time. There is some magic in the lakes, forests, stillness of the place. People are really interesting. You don't get a peep out of a lot of them and then they open up telling you the most amazing stories about themselves. One of the earliest origins of humanity are the Finns. Many say the earliest of the earliest. Look into the Bock saga for a completely transformed prehistory and history of civilization.

Nice video! As a Finn I have one correction tough. Finland was not in any way "forced" to fight the continuation war. Finland was the one who attacked and the war was in fact planned alongside operation barbarossa and over 300 000 German troops attacked through Finland. The fact that Finland was "forced" to fight this war is an outdated conservative nationalist myth. Considering Finland to be "neutral" during WW2 wouldn't be honest either since we we're a major part of operation barbarossa, held up on million soviet troops and partially enabled the encircling of Leningrad. The morality of the war is very questionable at best. Sure many Karelians had lost their home during the winter war but I definitely don't think it's moral to side with the most genocidal nation in history that would've committed unfathomable amounts of death in Russia had it succeeded. But unfortunately these are common misconceptions even among Finns.
@mikaveekoo
@mikaveekoo 2 ай бұрын
Of course the main reason for Finland to start the continuation war was to capture back the Karelian Isthmus. But passing the old border was of course not wise.
@orim8495
@orim8495 Ай бұрын
@@mikaveekoo Yea the main goal was 100% to capture back the Karelian Isthmus. It was just one of those impossible situations where it wasn't possible to reclaim it without participating in possibly the worst tragedy in human history (operation Barbarossa). And if Germany had succeeded it would've definitely been the worst tragedy in human history en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generalplan_Ost and Finland would've played a major role in it. If Finland just kept out of the war they themselves would have been better off too (didn't need to put their people through another war, lost less land and wouldn't have been as pressured by Russia in the Cold war) but of course this is hindsight.
