The DS was the first console I bought with my own money, specifically a DS lite, and when I say my own money, I actually mean I traded in half or more of my then game collection at the local GameStop. A couple of years earlier my dad had actually offered to buy me a DS, the original model, but I said I'd rather have the GBA SP. I didn't know what a DS was, no-one I knew had them, but all of my friends had SPs, while I was stuck with my non backlit, AA battery driven original GBA. I did get the SP for Christmas that year, but it also meant I didn't have a DS when I started getting interested. After much consideration I decided to trade in all these games at GameStop. I got like 120 bucks for them, which for an 11 year old in ca 2008 was unheard of riches, and I had to call my mom to confirm the trade in as I'd gone by myself to the store. She asked me if I was really sure, and I actually did walk out of the store without doing the trade once, before chaining my mind back and doing the trade (I have since bought back several of those games at a considerable mark-up, and I'm still looking for some in good CiB condition that I would like to own again). When everything was rung up I still didn't have enough for a DS + game, but the clerk, obviously realizing the potential profit of everything I'd just given him, nudged the prices a bit to cover for the last 20-30 bucks or whatever it was, and all of a sudden I was the proud owner of a DS Lite and Mario Kart DS.

As a kid I wished for a GBC for my birthday. My parents however, who otherwise weren't very knowledgeable on games newer than the NES, did their research and found out that the newly released GBA could play all the old GB and GBC games, as well as all the new games coming, and got me one of those instead. It was good reasoning, and defiantly a better deal for me, but a small part of me still gets a little sad I never got a GBC. I've been thinking on picking one up, but even at 30-40 dollars I find it hard to motivate just for a novelty, as I have my original GBA, the GBA SP I got a couple years later, as well as a GBA Player for Game Cube that I got a few years ago, all in working order that can also play GBC games.
