Ever wonder why pirates are often depicted wearing an eye patch? When pirates would board a target vessel the first order of business was to eliminate or subdue the occupants of the ship in question. The majority of the fighting took place on the ships deck during daylight hours. Once the ships deck was clear it was necessary to go below deck where they would likely encounter another wave of armed opposition. The transition from the bright mid day sunlight to the darkness below deck would leave the raiding pirates nearly blind for several minutes until their eyes adjusted to the extremely poorly lit conditions. Enter the eye patch- immediately upon going below deck a pirate would remove his patch to reveal an eye that due to having been shielded from the sun was already adjusted to the darkness and ready to see whatever threats might await him below deck.

No offense, but that doesn't make much sense to me. What's the source of this info?
@whssy5 жыл бұрын
@@grumpy9721 perhaps it's anecdotal. But I was given this tip for sure when cycling in the French Alps, where there can be long road tunnels. Basically the tip was that when you saw the tunnel sign - close one eye - then open it when you got into the tunnel. Meant you didn't have to take your sunglasses off and put them on again at the other end. It makes perfect sense to me.
@NathanASMR5 жыл бұрын
Hello friends! I can clear this up for you. It has been demonstrated that it is scientifically possible to retain one’s night vision by covering or closing one eye. Pilots will even do this to retain their night vision while flying. However, there are no historical accounts that mention eyepatches being used in this way by pirates, or other seafaring combatants for that matter. There is also no archaeological evidence for the idea, and it is difficult to see how this hypothesis could be confirmed through archaeology in the first place. Thus, while it is plausible, the hypothesis may be untestable at this time. Another question is why marines of the period didn’t also wear eyepatches to protect their dark-adapted vision and improve their ability to engage in combat below deck. This would have enhanced their chances of success in taking an enemy ship. It seems that if pirates could come up with the idea, seasoned marines and naval officers could have thought of it as well. Therefore it is also plausible that it could have been to cover up an injury as well. My thoughts are the reasons vary but of course, I think your hypothesis is a valid one theoretically speaking.

Another pirate fact: some vessels would carry two flags one black (with or without a banner) and one red. If the black was flown, this signalled to the target vessel or port that you were going to be boarded and raided, but if the red was flown then this meant the cannons were out and they would destroy the target without any remorse or care of any loot.
