First cleaning using Bicks 4 and a tiny bit of saddle soap

Tough video to do. Didn’t come out great, couldn’t get the camera to focus. Ended up editing a lot out, which stinks because one part I really wanted in there (and I cut it by accident). But these boots are roughly 3.5 months old, and they finally were at the point of needing some treatment. Lot of salt, snow, water, walking. I probably put 50 miles in on these things last week, as I’m starting to wear them more. They are darker now, but they’ll lighten up very quickly (because Bick 4 is pretty easy on leather and doesn’t darken it permanently).

Just subscribed after watching like 6 of your videos. I dig that you actually work in and wear the boots on your channel. Cleaning and caring for my boots is my zen time 😂. I got really into it awhile back. I always try to take care of my stuff as it seems do you! Nice work on these btw!

Appreciate that! I just made a batch of leather conditioner - this stuff is like Obenauf’s - it’s four ounces neats foot oil and one ounce bees wax. Melt it together and it’s great conditioner. For $22 bucks total I made 40 ounces of leather conditioner. Darkens the leather but for work boots it doesn’t matter to me.

I just got this exact pair a few weeks ago and put them through the first cleaning

I mainly wiped them with a wet rag then brushed and applied Redwing leather cream. It didn’t darken them and allows the copper color to come through. We’ll see how they hold up to New England winters!

@@lewis7394I’m in New England too, and as you know, the last three months have been nothing but salt and snow (although not much snow). I waited a lot longer than you to treat these things, I just wanted to keep that original look as long as I could, but you’re 100% right, the Red Wing boot cream won’t darken them much. I find it to be very similar to the Bicks. I use it a lot. Good idea with the wet rag instead of saddle soaping them (if the saddle soap isn’t needed I tend to avoid it). Good luck with your boots! Took me a long time to break these in!

In your last video I think you mentioned that your iron rangers were nubuck and not full grain, I think that you’re mistaken. In the red wings website it says the iron ranger is full grain copper rough and rough, and when you go in the 1907 copper rough and tough says nubuck waxed. You can kind of feel the difference between the 1907 leather and the 8085 leather even though both are copper rough and tough. 1907 more for esthetics and 8085 for work and tear. My opinion though. Regardless you got the better leather. Btw I’m by no means trying to discredit your work. Great video! I like seeing how these boots look worn.

Good catch, you’re 100% right. My mistake - and I’ll tell yeah looking at the leather, wearing them and conditioning them, I always have thought to myself…this isn’t nubuck. It doesn’t feel like it, it doesn’t look like it. I’m glad it’s oiled full grain. I’m loving the leather on these things.

Glass cleaner? Interesting. Any reason why ?

This brand of glass cleaner is pretty easy on plastics/rubbers, and it does a decent job on shining up those materials. It cleaned up my soles pretty well. I know people in the cleaning business that swear by it…both in automotive and house cleaners.
