Hello everyone ! This is what I call a “positive IUD insert POV”. This POV was inspired by multiple IUD inserts I’ve done with my own patients- who had great experiences. Please read the description of the video for disclaimers. Before getting an IUD, you should be given a very thorough CONSULT in which the provider explains the different types, the steps of the procedure, as well as review whether or not you would be a good IUD candidate. I find MANY patients have never been told what the process of getting an IUD is like - which is HORRIBLE. The goal is to make sure you are well aware of every step, and that there is open communication during the process. Terms I used in this video are descriptions of what my patients have personally told me as far as what each step feels like- I personally wouldn’t know as I have never had an insert myself. Although I have never encountered a patient having a bad experience with their IUD insertion in the clinic, that does not mean that bad experiences don’t exist. They do. And a lot of this falls on the provider. Informed consent. That’s all I have to say. This platform is to be a safe space for ALL individuals. We are all different.I have had patients feel Pap smears, others not at all. I’ve had patients feel the tenaclum-others (again) not at all. I’ve even had patients not even feel the IUD going in- and I’ve heard others stories on how it was the worst pain they have experienced. Please respect each other as experiences will vary. 💙 I would like to hear about all of your IUD experiences- it helps me in my own patient care approach and helps all of you learn from each other.

Thank you for making this video. When I went for my first IUD insertion, the process was awful. I brought my mom with me, but the clinicians were hesitant to let her back with me. I was completely unmedicated (not even ibuprofen) and the pain was excruciating (even for a couple of days after). I wish that I'd had someone like you to help keep me calm and informed. The second time with my current GYN was a whole different experience! She told me to bring whoever and whatever I need to relax -- I made my fiancé go-- and prescribed valium and ibuprofen for the day-of. She used a special speculum that is more comfortable for me (which reminded me of you, because until I watched your videos I had no idea there were different shapes and sizes!). She found that I have a vaginal septum near my cervix, which is likely what has caused pain and discomfort during GYN exams in the past. I actually told her about your videos and how they helped me relax and know what to expect in the office, which she thought was super cool. But, anyway. I really appreciate medical professionals like you and my doctor who are committed to creating a comfortable, personalized, and informed patient experience. It's literally changed my entire relationship with going to the GYN. ❤❤

I actually cried watching this because I wish I was given this kind of choice and information before/during my procedure. I was told it would be mild cramping and that was pretty much it. The pain ended up being the worst pain of my life. I kept going though it never occurred to me I could actually tell them to stop because the pain was too much and I couldn’t think clearly. I basically didn’t think I could ask them to stop - I just had to sit and endure the pain. I’ve gotten the iud out and switched drs since then. I just wish more medical providers were like you and wish I was more informed before my procedure. Thank you for these videos and showing us what medical visits should look like ❤️

Thank you so much for this video! I have been waiting for it! While I am here, I thought I would share my experience with Mirena. I got my IUD inserted in June, and although I would say it was a relatively painful experience, it was definitely not the worst pain I have ever felt. Like maybe a 7/10. The biggest thing for me was that I was cramping a lot for a couple of hours afterwards. It has since subsided, which is nice, and now I get relatively frequent headaches which I didn't have before with it but almost no periods. For me that is a worth it trade off! Moral of the story... do what makes you feel the most confident, and the least worried. Hope this helps for anyone considering iuds!!!

For anyone reading this, make sure to only see a doctor that uses the new Carevix clamp (which uses gentle suction to stabilize the cervix) instead of the traditional tenaculum clamp which has two sharp prongs that stab into your cervix, which is not only painful but can cause permanent nerve damage. Some women have even reported losing sensation in their clitoris after undergoing gynecological procedures that use the traditional tenaculum. This is because the nerves in the cervix and the nerves in the clitoris are located on the same map.

It's really quite absurd how painful and difficult birth control can be, largely because women's health is not researched and prioritized in the medical field nearly as much as it needs to be. I'm certain that if men had to do things like this, birth control would be simple and easy because researchers and pharma companies would actually make it a priority.

My GP went straight in with a pelvic block injection this time around and with a lovely nurse holding my hand it was doable. She was extremely patient and talked me through it the entire time reminding me that I could stop at any time which I appreciated a lot; and she waited for my verbal confirmation everytime. The measuring was 100% the worst part for me and had to take a break and have a little cry haha. The rest hurt but was okay. After i’ve had nothing but back ache! If it wasn’t for my doctor making me feel heard and advocating for me I wouldn’t have managed it. 😅

For anyone considering getting an IUD, make sure you request anesthesia and a pharmaceutical grade pain medication (such as an opioid) as many women have reported the procedure to be excruciatingly painful. Requesting a prescription for Cytotec is also advised as it helps the cervix dilate (the IUD procedure involves dilating the cervix which can be very painful) Some doctors recommend getting the IUD whilst on your period to reduce the pain as your cervix is already dilated during your menstrual cycle. Lastly, it's also highly recommended to only see a doctor that uses the new Carevix clamp (which uses gentle suction to stabilize the cervix) instead of the traditional tenaculum clamp which has sharp prongs that stab into your cervix, which is not only painful but can cause permanent nerve damage. Some women have even reported losing sensation in their clitoris after undergoing gynecological procedures that involve the use of the tenaculum. This is because the nerves in the cervix and the nerves in the clitoris are located on the same map.

A genuine question, why do some providers not provide any kind of in office pain management for insertion (or than advising to take OTC ibuprofen)? What's considered "best practice" by the ACOG? How can I voice a complaint about the need for better in-office pain management without being rude or seen as a difficult patient (this practice is part of a hospital system)? When I had the Mirena IUD inserted, my gyn was rather brisk and curtly said they don't offer pain management in office for IUD insertions (not even a local numbing injection for the cervix) & if I wanted pain medicine, I'd have to have it done at the hospital under anesthesia, which would of meant rescheduling & finding someone available to drive me, more hassle than I wanted. She was also kinda dismissive when the teneculuum placement and cervical dilation caused intense uterine cramping (because she hadn't "touched the uterus yet" although I know what I felt & that the cervix is part of the uterus) 🙄 Needless to say, I ended up cramping for 4 weeks straight and my body rejected the IUD & I decided not to go through that again 😞

Did everyone else have a good experience with their insertion and whole experience or am I just a baby?😭 I hate it I can't wait to get it out

tell your provider you want it out and make sure they report your adverse reaction to the manufacturer. Do not let them gaslight you if you are uncomfortable or in pain. You do not have to live with that.

Can someone who had an awful experience tell me what exactly was so painful? Was it the cramps or something like a stabbing/cutting sensation or what was SO painful that you almost passed out? I can’t imagine it…I have my appointment in 2 weeks and I am scared shitless because of some comments here 🫥 and was it an ongoing never ending pain or a sharp short one?

If anyone wonders: I survived just fine 🤷🏻♀️ some details: I don’t have children, never had an UID inserted nor any sort of surgery or treatment on my uterus or cervix, was on the mini pill for almost a decade beforehand. Didn’t have my period while she inserted it because I don’t have one due to the mini pill, took 800mg of Ibuprofen 1h before, my OBGYN numbed my cervix first with a numbing ointment then with a couple of injections (wasn’t bad AT all I swear), fixating the cervix, measuring and insertion caused some cramping that lasted like 15 seconds max. but again totally bearable, everything was over in a couple of minutes. The first couple of hours afterwards were pretty uncomfortable (actually the “worst” thing about this whole procedure), it felt like being on your first heavy period day but nothing bad, didn’t need any more pain medicine, slept just fine, 24h later I feel like nothing happened. Only thing is a little bit of slimy discharge, but that’s normal. My OBGYN was extremely careful, communicating, honest and upfront with every single step, we talked a lot during the process, I trusted her completely and I seriously prepared myself mentally for the worst pain in my life due to all the comments, maybe that helped also. So for everyone who is like me and got super scared, you don’t have to be! Talk to your doctor, prepare yourself mentally and keep in my that at ANY point YOU can just stop everything, YOU are in charge! Good luck to everyone :) thanks for the amazing video!

little late in answering. but it was the worst pain of my life. measuring and opening my uterus was a deep achey pain that made me so nauseous and then the actual insertion felt like someone ripped me apart inside. i screamed and they just told me to calm down :( it really was traumatizing and they also didn’t insert it correctly and it moved outside of my uterus.

@@laurengapinski1377 hey thanks for your comment! I‘m so sorry that you had this traumatic experience! Sounds absolutely awful. I can only imagine the pain. Since my insertion I’ve had extremely painful periods (at least the first day is quite debilitating if I don’t take meds but still manageable when taken meds). I guess I was just lucky that she numbed me beforehand because I wasn’t on my period that day. But again she was super considerate and sensitive and asked me every 5 seconds if I was okay and if I wanted to proceed. I hate that we as women are expected to take care of birth control AND just have to endure excruciating pain at the same time. Really sorry love ☹️
