I believe the Love Ball is most effective when used with a Pokémon of the opposite gender to the one you're trying to catch. This is likely why Magmar escaped twice, since both Pokémon shared the same gender.

@@RainessaASMR Fun fact, this is only because you're playing Heart Gold, not the original Gold version. In the original Gold version there was a bug that made the Love ball work better on the same gender. 🏳‍🌈

Morty is one of my fav gym leader of all time! And yes, it makes me laugh that he was the "ghost" type gym leader though there were only 4 pokemons back at that time! 😀 it's like the dragon gym leader, literally 4 pokemons! But Gengar was cool back then and it's still one of my fav pokemon Thanks for this adventure, hope you'll find the shiny (OMG 4k soft reset? I'm not feeling well ahahahah)

Love the ghost type Pokémon! In my 1st Red Version playthrough as a kid, Gengar stayed with me all the way through the Elite 4. I had his figurine, and the rest of my team/favorites: Venasaur, Sandslash, Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos (little me was very proud of catching those legendaries 😁).
