Hello! Today we're looking at an atlas from 1927 where for once, the maps might not be the most interesting part. This one has plenty of historic information in beautiful infographics, from natural resources to technological progress to the state of the world economy.
Obviously with an atlas from that time period, there is going to be problematic content and language. I decided to largely skip those parts - not because I want to sugar coat anything, but because I believe that an ASMR video is the wrong place for that kind of discussion. I hope you understand!

There is an unbelievable amount of information in this book. A lot of this information isn't even available on wikipedia to this day, with the whole world and 20 years of contributions. This was one book, in the same graphic style, released to a deadline. It's crazy.

Hi Melange! I love your videos, they are so relaxing and educational. In 21:15, you were wondering what might've happened in Mexico around that time. What happened was that we were on the aftermath of a revolution, it was very gruesome, soldiers and revolutionaries were very violent, so that explains the number of deaths. Although the Mexican Revolution was held between 1910 and 1920, in that year there were still a lot of conflicts around the country.

Tons of Americans have German ancestry. In fact, prior to World War I, German was widely spoken in the US - i believe it was the second most common language after English. But many people stopped speaking it because the US and Germany were on opposite sides of the war and they didn't want their loyalty to be questioned. But in the US today you can still see the influence of German culture in our foods and many places have Oktoberfests or other celebrations of German culture and heritage
@MelangeASMR
@MelangeASMR 2 жыл бұрын
Ah I didn't realize German was that common back then! The only example I'd heard of was Pennsylvania Dutch which is more of a localized thing, so I didn't know German was so widespread. Interesting!

I couldn't resist that bit of mystery at 21:15 so I googled "1927 Mexico deaths" and it gave me a list of unfamiliar names that said Catholic priest, executed Catholic priest, executed Catholic priest, executed Catholic priest, executed Etc. Etc. In 1926 Mexican President Calles enforced the anticlerical provisions of the 1917 Mexican constitution (a model for the Weimar constitution) and the resulting religious uprising was called the Cristero War. To oversimplify - Calles government wanted to eliminate the influence of the Catholic Church and force secular education so they eliminated the priests. By 1929, there were 250,000 dead and the same number emigrated to the US (many to Los Angeles, California).

It's a type of coffee, similar to a cappuccino, that's very common in Austria, and a Wiener Melange is often used as a metaphor for a mix of anything typically Viennese. (And I figured it fits well, what with the Vienna coffeehouse culture of taking time to relax in a beautiful café, treat yourself to a hot drink and something sweet, and leave through a provided newspaper or chat about god and the world.)
