American viewer here - my favorite sandwich is a grilled cheesy BLT you will need to slice up some cheddar cheese - butter both pieces of bread - cut up some tomato into slices - cut up a head of lettuce - you need to heat a pan on medium heat - cook some bacon on the pan - you will now need to use mayo on the other side of the bread that's not buttered it does get messy lol - put the buttered side of the bread just one slice into the pan then pile on the bacon, lettuce and tomato then place the cheese on top of it all and place the other slice of bread butter side up - let cook on one side till its golden brown then flip to other side and cook till its golden brown - that's a cheesy BLT sandwich. BTW I am going to try the first sandwich you made in this video I will just have to find that type of sweet pickle spead here in America lol

I lived in scotland and england for about a year. British sandwich bread is much better than the usa. I was put off by the chip butty myself but my british husband loves em. The butter on the sandwiches didnt bother me, but i tried it in america and didnt like it. I dont know if it was the butter or the bread. I loved the sandwiches you get from the garages there. They are made fresh and delivered daily...at least in the part of scotland we lived in. Wotsits from the other sandwich video were my favorite while i was there followed closely by quavers.

It's more that we don't tend to like our bread "dry"/uncovered. So if it already has a sauce/is a sauce like nuttella, peanut butter, corination chicken, prawn mayo, sometimes jam (jelly to you I guess) ect. Then no we don't tend to also add butter. But dry ingredients like cheese, meats, veg/salad, ect. Then yeah we'll use a condement of some kind.

Is square as opposed to diagonal slicing a preference or common practice in the UK?
@countesscable
@countesscable 4 ай бұрын
No, diagonal cuts are preferred as a rule, but for sandwiches with bulky stuff like fishfingers, it’s not suitable as the filling would fall out. Hence they are cut like this.
@Dingle-Tingle
@Dingle-Tingle 4 ай бұрын
I concur, sausages, fish fingers, chips (fries) are all best suited to a cut straight across the middle. Prevents the filling escaping.

US viewer, here. you mentioned fish and chips for the second sandwich; is it common for people to mix the second and third sandwiches together to make a fish and chips sandwich? Just curious
@Dingle-Tingle
@Dingle-Tingle 4 ай бұрын
I haven't done it myself but I know of some people who have done it, more of an experiment rather than frequent choice though

It’s common to do a fish finger sandwich and then smash up and sprinkle crisps (chips in the US) ontop… which I guess is the same idea 😊

As a british person and a chef. This is pain xd Yeet the tartare sauce and add mayo, or both of course, seasoning and eight fish fingers, stacked on top of eachother. So you actually have more filling than bread. Also adding kimchi and/or spicy mayo, even touch of lemon juice, is game changer. Even a nice fresh loaf would level it up. Nice ploughmans though~ (also dont take me seriously xd. Is fun video)

Yeah. Eating bread is unhealthy. It should be minimal, just to keep the filling together.

A chip butty is such a good sandwich yet it doesn't catch on elsewhere such as in America for a very specific reason... preservatives. Now we are talking specifically packaged bread here, as is the way to go (weirdly) with a chip butty with my personal recommendation being Warburtons toastie (Orange loaf) Packaged American bread has an average shelf life of a month, whereas here in the UK youre lucky to get a shelf life of about 4 days. Its simply because we dont allow the same chemicals/additives that the US does which yields a far superior loaf of sandwich bread. Its soft but also dense whilst maintaining a high level of flavour. American bread has a brittleness to it and a very inconsistent crumb, this is obviously a byproduct of the preservatives and chemical additives but it really doesnt make for a good sandwich. Its taste is lackluster and doesnt add to the experience of the sandwich it is quite literally just a vehicle for the ingredients. Its also the reason why crisps or chips if youre american seems so weird to put on bread, its inconsistent crumb makes the sandwich appear dry as opposed to the packaged bread such as warburtons which is a high hydration dough, with no trans or hydrogenated fats. America has good bread, its selection of fresh bread is fantastic. But in terms of sandwich bread, its honestly probably one of if not the worst.

Very informative, is the shelf life of bread in the U.S really up to a month? Tbh I find the shelf bread in the UK still too mass produced, I prefer the bread baked daily if I can help it!

In Australia our chippy sanga has chicken salt on the chips rather than salt and vinegar and a big squirt of mata sauce (tomato) yum 😋😋 Oh and we also butter our bread for all of our sangas!

I used to talk to a woman from Wales and she had never heard of chicken salt. I told her to order some online. She loves it! People who don't have access to it should definitely buy it online. It's a game changer!
