Sadly, I didn't take advantage of all of the advanced math I could have learned back in high school for free. Chycho, I appreciate how happy you are to share your knowledge in a helpful format to help others learn. In my case, I didn't truly appreciate math in my younger years, and it's my own fault for choosing to avoid taking any math that was not required. I like that I can pick up at my level with your videos to build on what I did learn or refresh my memory on techniques. In a way, I see math as like a software program--even if on paper--it's a bunch of truths (symbols of truth) and commands recorded to help our brains keep track of what it knows in pieces, yet can't focus on all at once.
@chycho6 жыл бұрын
Very well put, Christopher, great way to look at it, a 'software program' to help us understand different types of systems. By the way, you shouldn't be too hard on yourself, our centralized education system does an extremely poor job teaching math and making it accessible to everyone.

If you don't see a solution at the end, a lot of time solutions to that book can be found in the Internet, made by publisher in the first place and just released separatedly or just compiled by TAs. It's useful for certain kind of older textbooks.

you are the future of mathematics. I'm sorry to say that you wouldn't fit in a highschool curriculum, but i think it's hilarious that we both know it. I think it's even funnier how many people know that you're much better than anyone teaching right now. Teachers don't teach deep understanding, some students rip on others who do want a deep understanding, but I can tell that the trend is changing. Due to the internet and how connected we are as a species, we can find the most intuitive explanation for anything. Once these people who have access to all these explanations start teaching students, we're going to have a much more understanding human race. I wish people were as open to math and other social issues as you were sir
@chycho8 жыл бұрын
+Tyler Hushour I agree, there is no way that I could fit within a centralized education system, and I'll never try to. And most definitely the future of education, a good education, is to function outside of that system. The problem is that the divide that is being created right now is huge, it's creating inequality the likes of which we have not seen for a very long time. That said, over time what you stated will occur. Once the information disseminates, this will take a few decades, we will have a "much more understanding human race."

Hey Chycho, For the entirety of my life I hated Math but recently I got really interested in Machine Learning and A.I., on a quick scan I found out that in order to even approach these subjects I need to learn Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra...well obviously for someone who dumped math a long time ago, jumping into these would be nearly impossible, although I'm determined to do it as the subject fascinates me. Would you be able to give me a roadmap for a filistine like me with stuff to learn, books to read-practice- in order to build up to Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus? Thanks a bunch and keep the good work!
@chycho8 жыл бұрын
Oh my! Now that is a large topic. I'd suggest starting with Linear Algebra, it's way easier to deal with than Calculus. Think of Linear Algebra as solving systems of equations (finding the value for one of more variables), and it's also good to start here since it's easy to visualize - graphing really. As for where to start, the book I show here is a good starting point - if you know what linear equations are (LINEar = equations of a Line). Another book that I would recommend that I found while unpacking some boxes is "Algebra and Vector Geometry" by Stanton and Fryer - it's the book that I used to learn the subject. As for Multivariable Calculus... oh man, I haven't touched that stuff for a very long time. I'll be doing some major review and re-learning the material before I start creating my math videos on calculus so maybe hit me up in two to three years and I'll have some suggestions for you... my to go to book though is "Calculus" by Howard Anton. Hope that helps.

? lol what
@TylerHNothing8 жыл бұрын
+TheiLame you just need to get in and make sense of those letters and understand the intuition they're trying to get you to pick up on. I know it's hard work, and it takes a lot of practice. It's like any sport though, if you do it enough, you get better, you start to pick up on patterns and the intuition. Remember, if you want to be a baseball player, you practice, watch baseball games, and talk to people who are successful in the field. If you want to get better at math, you need to practice, watch people do it, and talk to people who are better than you and ask them the right questions

Chycho, love the measured approach to creating youtube videos you take and this video is one of my favourites. One thing i must ask is whether i need to have an advanced knowledge of economics to read Hedges and Sacco's book? I have already ordered it but i'm wondering if you feel that i should dive into some peripheral topics before starting reading? Regards, Sam
@chycho9 жыл бұрын
+Samuel Ewen No, you won't need any advanced knowledge of economics. He presents straight up percentages or numbers (ratios) and they will blow you away. I hope you enjoy it, at least find it enlightening since enjoy really doesn't fit in this case, it's a very depressing read in terms of what corporations and governments have done. And Hedges really doesn't hold back, neither does Sacco. One of my favorite books that's for sure. Let me know what you think of it if you get a chance, and I do hope you find the read worth while.
@MrCliveado8 жыл бұрын
Hey Chycho, I read through days of destruction and it was a great read, made even better by Sacco's illustrations, in fact it opened my eyes to things i never knew. The section of the book that peers into the destruction of the lives of the native Americans was really shocking, along with the way that Capitalism treats our earth as an apparently limitless comodity while blindly destroying it. Some might say that in light of the atrocitries brought about by capitalism we should adopt a socialist approach to wealth distributon. If i were 16 again, going through my socialist phase i might agree but i feel that actually there is no system to rival capitalism in it's ability to bring about a generally greater quality of life of for all. As i have seen, and the book demonstrates, it is easy to point out the flaws in Capitalism but not to suggest a practical system to rival it. However, Sacco and Hedges book does show that we can be ruthless and selfish and it is right to shed light on the hardships people have suffered. It's a very thought provoking read and i feel mentally enriched for having read it. Thanks for the reccomendation! Sam
@chycho8 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, Sam, glad you enjoyed it. Definitely an intense book, shows us the true nature of "sacrifice zones". As for capitalism, it would be interesting to see what the world would look like if we practiced true capitalism. What we have right now is anything but, it's crony capitalism, which in the long run, imho, will turn most of the world into a sacrifice zone.

Hi, nice video! Is there any chance of you making a video discussing some high level (grad school+) mathematics? Also, I do think it's important to note that some of your tips do not work well beyond the college level---most well-known higher level textbooks, for instance, do not come with solutions to the exercises.
@chycho9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the clarification, DKT. And with some of those higher level math courses, you actually do end up having to read the whole thing. As for making grad school plus math videos, thanks for the vote of confidence but that's way beyond me right now. One day I think I'd like to go back and continue my math education, but I haven't had to do anything close to that heavy for over two decades, since I left school. I'd even have to review my calculus before I could start making that series... incredible how fast you lose it. One thing I do plan on doing though is once I get some of my books out of storage is to make a video and show some of my books in my library. I do have some really rare math books that I acquired/inherited a long time ago. There is actually a couple of topics that I would like to be able to understand: Reed-Solomon code theory and Applications of Finite Fields... one day :)
@Danuunad9 жыл бұрын
+chycho Ah, okay. I guess I got a little over-enthusiastic ;) I was starting to dream of studying math while falling asleep, haha! I'd be interested in the book about finite fields---if you could discuss some of the contents that'd be pretty cool! You probably won't need calculus for it: Pure algebra (like the theory of fields, in the mathematician's sense as opposed to the physicist's) usually doesn't depend on that.
@chycho9 жыл бұрын
+DKT haha, that's okay, sometimes I end up dreaming about doing math so that sort of balances the scales. As for the finite field's book, I believe I have about 4 or 5 them, the one I know that I have for sure is this one: books.google.ca/books/about/Applications_of_Finite_Fields.html?id=qhbTBwAAQBAJ&source=kp_cover&redir_esc=y

Joe Sacco, that you present his book and admire so much is one of the biggest bigots, antisemitic, jew hating people in the world. The guy wrote three or four books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, all of which are one sided and extremely anti-Israeli. He does not even pretend to be objective about it, he simply takes the side of one party in the conflict without questioning their motives, their behaviour and their reasoning. This simple-minded approach and this onesidedness is usually a sign of a great bias and hatred. In the case of Israel, this bias and hatred usually correlates to jew hating and antisemitism. I suggest that you read his books with much more criticism.
