I am so fascinated by this traditional style of painting, it's so nice to see someone keeping this art alive. It's such a unique medium and produces beautifully delicate works. Absolutely gorgeous, thank you for sharing. I wish this was taught in the west , I would love to learn it. Wonderful.
The metallic lines add such a refreshing quality to the image. Well done, Kaiteki.

This is a flower called dutchmans pipe cactus, which looks like waterlilies. It is a large, white, flower with a nice smell. Btw, Waterlilies are also a big favorite of mine🥰

I originally intended to make this series in two videos, but that was not possible due to the large number of processes😂 In part 2, I mainly did the coloring, so in the next part 3, I will do the decoration and the picture will be gorgeous!

Do you have a recommendation for a beginners “palette” of nihonga minerals, especially for doing portraits like yours? I wanted to maybe pick up some supplies to try the next time I visit Japan, but have no idea where to start color-wise 😅
@dakotamullikin76733 жыл бұрын
If you're interested/don't want to wait to go on a trip to Japan, Saiun do (major seller of Nihonga minerals) has a partnership with London-based Choosing Keeping (which has an online store with international shipping) and they have some sets of minerals, gansai, and teppachi available. I don't think they have a set that's specifically geared toward portraits, but you could always ask.

@@dakotamullikin7673 thank you, I think I’ve seen their other products but not that they had nihonga ones, very good to know 😊

Mmm… depending on what you want to paint should be the range of colors for you to use. For example, if you plan on painting people, I would suggest getting something on the warm colors like yellow, pinks and reds with the addition of browns. Those tend to be the common pigments that can be seen on a lot of people. While there are cool toned skin, I would suggest getting blue pigments. Or, if you’re still unsure of what you want, go to a local store that sells make up and check their foundation colors. If you’re a scenic painter, I would suggest blue, green, yellows and browns. Green, yellow and brown are some of the most common colors in nature while blue is a great shadow color along with grey. Regardless of it all, just make sure to pick up white, grey and black. I know nothing about nihonga paintings but if it’s just color suggestions, those are the ones that I have.
