This is perfect timing for me!! 😊 Just arrived to North Carolina from the bay area last night! My ears are still plugged from the altitude on the plane 😢 but still able to listen to the video hahah. Any suggestions for visitors? Any places/attractions I shouldn't miss? I'm here for a week with a 4 year old :)

As a girl raised in the Texas hill country who just moved to Houston, I so agree with all your points!! Gotta say the thing I miss most about the country is the darkness and the silence at night! Those stars can’t be beat :)

Loving this video. Fascinating about the snakes and rabid animals, we really take it for granted here in UK how few dangerous animals we have. Agree love the country and really miss the dark skies, neighbourliness and in general being so aware and feeling so much part of nature.

Mary, I'm a city girl from TX currently staying in the mountains in Marshall NC for a few weeks and this sure has been an experience for me. Windy af road that takes 30 mins to the nearest civilization (grocery store, gas) PITCH black at night, but the most amazing starry nights. By the way ever since your video on biscuitville a few years ago I've been wanting to try it. Well I finally did in Hickory NC.......so disappointed. Maybe the one in your area is much better lol.

I grew up in Mississippi and moved to Arizona for college. When I first moved, i still had a heavy southern accent. One of my first days in college i introduced myself to a classmate and she naturally asked where i was from, hearing my voice. When i said mississippi, she responded, quite seriously, "You know how to read?!?!?!?!"

Had to stop this video and look up whippoorwill and listen to them. There was a song when I was little with the line "when whippoorwills call" and I often wondered what they were and what they sounded like. I grew up on a huge housing estate in the UK, right on the edge of the countryside.....so it was pretty quiet but we had all our basic needs. We had a mobile library which came once a week ❤️ and a cinema a short distance away where we went for Saturday morning matinées but we also got to climb trees, catch sticklebacks in the stream and make dens. I think it was the best of both worlds. It wasn't a perfect childhood as I had more than my fair share of problems and trauma but I reckon that being able to go outside straight into nature was therapeutic ❤️

Mary, I just finished this fictional book that gets pretty nitty-gritty about how city people and corporations view “country” people/regions. It’s called “Demon Copperhead”. Very heavy topics (painkillers, mining companies, foster care, abuse, etc). Probably not one you’d review on here but I think you’d love the author’s thoughtfulness and intentions.

I grew up mostly in the suburbs, but spent my summers at my grandma’s cabin or road-tripping/camping up and down the PNW coast. If you ever get over here, I recommend staying away from the cities/suburbs and just stick to HW 101 or the Cascade loop. It’s worth it to bring your passport and head across the border to see the canadian PNW as well!

One more ramble because I’m procrastinating sleep- I’d be curious to know your thoughts on the newer country artists that have been coming out of the woodworks. There’s a bit of a bluegrass comeback going on, my personal favorites have been Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers, and Sam Barber. They remind me of John Denver with more twang!

I SO understand all of this. I was from a small Wisconsin city (33K) and there were many tiny towns and farms around us, but went to college in Milwaukee, which had about a million people when you include its suburbs. Hated it, but lived there the next 45 years as it was where my husband's city job was. Once he and I retired, we moved to a village of 2300 people. Quite the culture shock for hubby, but I loved it! We are only 45 minutes from Milwaukee, so anything I'd want city-related is nearby, but I do not miss it in the least! The first thing we did in our new house was put in lots of dark-activated night lights both in and out the house because it got pitch-black and made it hard to navigate. One of our favorite things to do it sit outside by the campfire and enjoy the total silence, just hearing toads and crickets and things like that. Brings me peace. I admit, the hardest things for me to get used to when I first went to college in Milwaukee was all the nighttime noise (sirens, police cars, constant 24-hr traffic) and things being lit up. Probably the only thing I miss are more local great restaurants that serve past 8 pm at night 😄

The first time I encountered a power outage at my best friends house who lived in town, I told her I felt weird going pee in her toilet and having to leave it & she said “…why would you leave it just flush the toilet?” And then schooled me on it 😂 I had to explain why we couldn’t at my house and she was shocked 😂

I was born and raised in Brooklyn and still live there and it’s big and loud but I always looked at it as a series of small towns. Each neighborhood has a different feel and most of my time growing up was spent in my neighborhood. Now this was 50 years ago but then everyone knew each other. We had a public school and a Catholic school and another private school. We all played on the same streets and hung out with each other. It certainly wasn’t a small town but it didn’t seem that big either. I sometimes wish I grew up in a small town.
