POV (happy This Time): You and Severus have only recently gotten together officially, after what felt like ages stuck in a “will they? won’t they?” situation. You still find it hard to believe he said yes, that he actually felt the same about you all this time. When Dumbledore first announced this party to the staff, you were unsure about the whole thing, since they usually resulted in you standing alone by the snacks while your friends danced wildly with their partners (sometimes recently acquired). But this time would be different, you actually had a date! You spent days narrowing down the perfect outfit when you were packing for Hogwarts, and the day of the dance you spent hours more deciding which one you’d actually wear. Were you brave enough to risk your life on the Grand Staircase by wearing heels? Or was it better to play it safe and wear flats? These were the difficult choices you had to make. And of course there was the...dancing. This was a school event after all, and Hogwarts was very traditional. Somehow, you didn’t think your interpretation of “the robot” would cut it. So you spent hours practicing traditional ballroom dances like the waltz in front of the mirror. Just to be safe, you even looked up and brewed a Happy Feet potion. Anything to ensure you did not become one of the many bumbling idiots who stepped on Severus’s cloak! After all that prep, you’re as ready as you’ll ever be. Severus meets you at the entrance to your quarters, and the two of you walk together to the party. Since you’re both staff, you spend most of the time watching the students, making sure they “left room for Merlin” as it were. You try staying close to Severus throughout the night, but he seems to be keeping his distance. At first you chalk it up to nerves, knowing he enjoys parties as much as he enjoys bashing his head against the wall. You secretly touch the Happy Feet potion in your purse, wondering if you’ll get to use it. Later on you realize you’ve lost sight of him after chatting with some of your colleagues, only to find him dancing with her: Professor Matilda Aldridge. At first you tell yourself it’s purely professional. After all, you did just see Dumbledore and McGonagall sweeping across the floor, so it wasn’t as if dancing with colleagues was completely unheard of. But the more you watch, the more you notice how perfectly in sync they are, how her hand sits just a bit too low on his back, and how the fiery red of her dress seems to almost envelop his dark robes as she spins into him. You decide it’s probably best to go get some air before that fiery red becomes a more literal description. Your mind is racing. Are you just overthinking this because you’re nervous, or is there actually some truth behind your fears? Would he seriously go for her of all people? She probably thought there was a difference between monkshood and wolfsbane! But then again, she did look stunning, not even you could deny that. You weren’t sure what to say when Severus found you or how you felt. Even if Matilda was just a colleague, why didn’t he dance with you? Why did he seem to be avoiding you the second the two of you arrived to the party? When he tells you the truth, you think he’s being ridiculous until you see the genuine fear in his eyes. He hadn’t given you much in the way of details about his time as a Death Eater, but it was clear he witnessed some terrible things. Not to mention how his last relationship ended, could you really blame him for wanting to be careful? When he takes you into his arms for a dance, you finally realize you never had anything to worry about. You fit together perfectly, as if your bodies were made to be like this. You only need to look into his eyes to see the unparalleled love he has for you and you alone. The rest of the world fades away as you and Severus sway gently under the stars. Suck it Matilda Aldridge.
