There's a novel called The Ballad of Black Tom that describes this effect in a unique way. Of course in the novel the protagonist really was being followed by an invisible presence, but he was walking down a tight, torch-lit corridor carrying a guitar case. As he was walking he noticed the case would occasionally bounce up higher than normal, and noted it was exactly as if someone's walking was bringing their foot up to kick his case behind him, someone following very close behind as he was led from the front by a mysterious man to where he'd play his instrument. He didn't risk a glance behind but was sure no one followed them into the tunnel.
