Casual chess player here, but I really enjoy your videos and I'm learning a lot about chess strategy. In your videos, you seem to make much of a player's (or computer's) rating, but how is that determined exactly? I assume it is based on the player's win/loss record in "officially" sanctioned tournaments, but I could be wrong (I tried reading through the Wikipedia entry on elo, but soon got bogged down in all the mathematical jargon). Does one need to compete in tournaments to be rated? Also, I assume that a player's "official" rating must be different than their online rating, is this correct? I'm sure lots of players like myself play online chess for fun or to wind down after a long day. However, these "throw away" games suddenly become meaningful if they affect the players overall rating, don't they? The ELO article indicated that wizards of the Coast stopped using this ranking system because they thought it was discouraging high ranking players from competing out of fear of diminishing their rating.
