ASOIAF Theories: Where Did The Weirwoods Come From?

The Weirwood trees seem to have innate power but assuming this theory is correct this species at some point must have tapped into this nexus, which changed it, perhaps this process was guided. We know that the children of the forest used Weirwoods to see across great distances and to create an afterlife for themselves, but could it have always been this way?
If we assume that at one point the children didn’t have this symbiotic relationship with the Weirwoods, then we have to ask ourselves the question where did the Weirwood trees come from?

I don't think the Weirwood trees are anything but conduits, like an internet with no servers. In nature they communicated very simple survival information to each other, but then the CotF discovered they could use them for enhanced telepathy, and the trees were selectively bred to enhance those useful traits. Dying CotF warged into the trees rather than into animals so that they could stay together.

My theory is Weirwood was inspired by Poe's poem Ulalume (..."the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir") which I'm sure George is well acquainted with as it was also an inspiration for Lovecraft, one of his favourite authors.

I am not a botanist, so this is sort of nature documentaries heresay: some old forests on earth with very tall giant trees have a type of fungus in their soil, which collects the water and nutrients from soil and feeds them to the plants, trees mainly. Those fungi being veeery thin filaments, form an unseen net troughout the soil, and being fungi, eat the organic material therein. big trees can not grow or dont get mature in soil without this fungi. So might there be a blood even corpse eating fungi in that planet, which connects all life which touch soil, - water touch earth too you know - that eventually dies and gets consumed/absorbed, and their soul? electromagnetic imprint? aura? whatever is saved in net memory. Weirwood trees may have been used as a direct connection point to the fungi, like monitors, mouse, touchpad etc of computers. More capable trees might have been selected, changed, domesticated sort of by the singers.
@ismata3274
@ismata3274 5 жыл бұрын
fungi are a much much older lifeform than flowering trees and mammals so, singers finding this net fully formed is normal in this situation. some say there is one fungus, a giant but one organism in these forests. and i heard of some forests made up of one tree, one genetic material, many trees overground but all propagated from one trees roots and spread as roots spread. in this case there is no need for fungi. Damn, who needs another planet for science fiction, our old earth is more than enough i must say.

@ ism Ata You may not be a botanist but you have a pretty good understanding of it!! I enjoyed your comments and extrapolations! Very good ideas you have! The giant fungus you talked about is 27 miles across. I believe it is in Montana (maybe Wyoming). It is 1 lifeform. The trees that are all one are the Aspens,Colorado. They can go for miles, all one being. Amazing! And thanks for sharing your thoughts! I actually thought along the lines of fungus involved as I learned about the Wierwoods, as well.

Fantasy. These trees eat people. Literally if you put one inside it's mouth. I don't know if fungi can do that. Reality. That's really cool. I had no idea any trees were actually connected to each other. Maybe tangled up but not in the manner you discuss.

As nerds, we love to pick things apart and figure out how they work. At the same time however, I feel like knowing how the magic system works makes it lose it's....magic. I think that as we (as a species) get smarter and smarter accepting the reality that some things can't be explained or aren't logical becomes more difficult. Maybe that's why I like the Lovecraft mythos, it's incomprehensible and thus unexplainable and in a way that's terrifying.

You rock dude, you really are on to something much bigger... you might be putting all the pieces together even better than what GRRM seams to be aware of. Good job! I have a certain idea I'm working on that you have somewhat touched on before, I believe the white walkers where Children of the forest before, they where the male counterpart but since they where male and probably fiscally stronger they sacrificed themselves in a ritual with dragon glass representing something like the weirwoods but much older since in essence it is a type of stone or crystal, to become a war machine to fight the humans. but instead they ended up turning into something unpredicted, much older and darker (closer to the old ones), and now they are back, but the children hope that they might be rescued and turned back to their lost males, that links Bloodraven to help them out in bringing back the white walkers and making a pact or transformation into their old selves, Jon snow might be this prince that was promised as the one to bring back the old male children of the forest. I know its pretty fucked but there is something there along those lines.

Certainly better than most voice actors in video game and just as good as those in movies. Keep that content coming! Don’t you just wish GRRM would release more content on: - The ruins of the old cities beneath Leng where a fallen god is said to lie. - Stygai the Corpse City - Sothoryos and the cursed city of Yeen. - Asshai - more secrets from this ancient city undoubtedly lie within Oh if only GRRM would explore the periphery of some of his outlying regions and the lore that lies within them! Let’s hope!

Its kind of interesting how GRRM chose the Weirwoods to be red. Whenever there is talk of areas with extreme levels of magic, the "black oily stone" and rampant deformities are pretty much never far away. If you regard the stone as some un-refined form of magical plutonium, the *red* Weirwoods would be a magical version of the "Red Forest" near Chernobyl. In this case, it would suggest the first Weirwoods evolved from an impact site of a red comet, and then spread out. Then a population of the predecessor shared by all humanoid species wondered too close to the early trees, and became symbiotic, much like koalas and eucalyptus trees; turning into the Children of the Forest.

"Eventually you will learn to see beyond the trees." Sounds like a gateway. Greenseer's can glimpse into the nexus. If the trees see all, and are a gateway, then you could see what they see at all times, everywhere. Which seems to be the case. Varamir six skins was obviously a very powerful warg, but he was immediately absorbed by the trees (nexus/gateway) Love the idea that the children now live "down in the earth" like they are now living inside a simulation, or an ever changing, controllable lucid dream. Also when Bran wargs the Raven, he feels all the children of the forest inside... Mayhaps they are living vicariously through experience. Like the Weirwood network is the worlds most fun "ride". Old school VR, with a civilization hive mind of Children of the Forest, watching and experiencing everything, all the time....

what if perhaps, the trees sprouted from the remains of a mutated child of the forest? in the show they are shown to mutate humanity into the white walkers, what if they performed a similar ritual on their own kind as a sacrifice to create the trees? because as the children get fewer, so do the trees, and it seems that the trees,like the children, don't have a whole lot of reproductive success

There has never been a mention of a sapling being found. The Aryns tried to grow a tree, but was it a transplant or sapling? My take is that the trees serve as the graveyard for the children. They infused the trees with their magic and consciousness. A soul is immortal therefore the trees became immortal otherwise they could not contain the souls. As you said they are symbiotic, and what good would that partnership be if the trees died after a few hundred years.

I think the trees are connected from the root's mycelium. The mycelium can be millions of years old, and the souls are preserved there. But the trees provide a way in and out for the Children's knowledge and souls. Cutting them down is destroying the Children's ability to communicate with the memories/souls preserved in the mycelium. The tree Arryns planted is in a high place in the mountains. It's root's cannot reach the mycelium and connect with rest of the network, causing it to be sickly and dying, since it needs that connection to thrive and survive long term. (Edit. Also, I think the weirwood tree needs blood to grow its roots deep enough. Arryns haven't sacrificed to it, or, like Ned, cleaned the executioner's blade (Ice) in a water that the tree feeds from. )

I think magic originates from the Shadow where dragons might be from. That would also be why Asshai is known for it's magic practitioners and why that area of the world is so uninhabitable. Perhaps the level of magic coming from the Shadow is too strong sort of like a magical Chernobyl, leaking magic everywhere. In any case the Shadow definitely has a strong connection with magic. If the theory that the Grey Wastes connect to the Heart of Winter is correct then maybe that is how the magic weirwoods got to Westeros. Some point in the past maybe the poles could have been less cold. We don't know what causes the Others to chill (lol) in the Heart of Winter so maybe something has always been there in which case I am probably wrong.

@IdeasOfIceAndFire My personal theory on magic is there two or three sources of magic depending on how your define "Source" Planeteos is world where to opposing forces meet: Ice and Fire. All magic comes from them ultimately. Ice enters Planeteos from beyond the Wall the far North. Fire enters Planeteos from the deep Shadowlands far beyond Asshai. Both these magics are either sentient like god or purposeful like an animal. But the important thing to remember is that both these magics are not omniscient, far from it. Just like you don't know what your intestines or kidneys are working or doing specifically, the Ice and Fire are not aware of themselves on a cellular level, just a in general sense. Ice and Fire appose one another seek the other's destruction. ALL magic users are ultimately parasites on the bodies magic. The only thing that differs between them is sometimes they work with or are aware of their host (the Others or the Red Priests), aware of the bodies magic and use it to their own ends (children of the forest, sorcerers, fortune tellers, maesters, etc.), misinterpret it (Faceless men), or are oblivious to the bodies magic (skin changers). Where these two magicks meet, is where the third force of magic arises. This magic is more raw and malleable than the other two and lacks the taint of purpose. It just is and awaits purpose from its users. Now this where things get really complicated. The people of Planeteos must find away to balance the two. If either one is defeated the other would then consume the world. It would mean the end of all life as we know it. Only the Others or the Burnt would survive, and they would exist as agents of Ice and Fire with no free will.

I think the demon tree Ygg story favors the idea of a force in the trees with some level of survival instinct and supernatural abilities. I’m pretty sure LML once pointed out that the name of the trees themselves weirwood could be translated into trap tree. I would suggest that the children were humans or near human stock that were domesticated by the weirwood trees. Domestication doesn’t even require the trees have sentience as we would see it, the trees just have to provide the right conditions. If it were the equivalent of a psychic pitcher plant the current relationship could have evolved over hundreds of thounsands of years and given the children their strange form while still letting them intermarry with their human cousins. Only a radical nearly supernatural level of changes could allow the children to evolve from human stock if they do indeed have claws and not fingernails.

I have more of a science-fiction based idea on how the Weirwoods may have happened. A sort of base-assumption for this would be that the Gods Eye was created through the impact of an extraterrestrial object. Some regular natural impactor, or something more supernatural. The details of that aspect are explained in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWnGhJ97p8toe9E Anyways, so the God's Eye appearently has the biggest grove of Weirwood trees and I think that this would be an indicator that it is the origin-point of that tree species. However, I believe that the evolution of the Weirwoods was coincidental and mainly related to what they were fertilised with. Often times wild-growing berries have a different (arguably more interesting) taste than the ones commercially grown in standartised soil. In the wild, Berries can suck up random elements from the Earth that make them develop a more unpredictable taste. What I think happened with the Weirwoods is that they were originally normal trees who sucked up some sort of alien substance from the soil of the Gods Eye. An element that specifically linked to telepathy. And after coming into contact with this substance, the normal trees started mutating into Weirwoods. Credit to AnAmericanThinks for the raw Theory, but I think it's best explained with the Berry Analogy. I believe this theory would work well because it would be possible whether or not ASOIAF is Fantasy or very sneaky Science Fiction.

I happen to think the ancient trees were former green seer's fully immersed into the trees. Bloodraven is a part of the tree, and attached to it in all his body. Those that stayed long enough, a long time ago, eventually became those said trees through some kind of children's ritual like the sipping of that stuff that bran ate on when he was given it by the children in the cave. O_O Some of those wier woods have had 8000 years to gestate, petrify, and grow. And red leaves can only mean that it is indeed, BLOOD, of the said deceased green seers or whomever was put into the tree. Perhaps another form of sacrifice to older gods that the children had known of in times before "G.O.T.". Then the first men came and changed all that by chopping them down. Then the last of the trees died around the time of the long night. Then some might have been regrown in the time that it took before the Starks settled completely and the last of the children fled north. Off a wiki I found: "Some trees are slow growers (20-30 years to reach full size) and some are fast (10-15 years). Red maple (Acer rubrum) is a moderately fast grower; given good growing conditions, it should put on 1-2 feet of growth per year once established. So think about it. 8 millennia pass between the end of the long night, but few trees in the seven kingdoms. So the north, when it was still green would have had lots. Cause when Bran, Hodor, and the wildling kids come to is the same Bran envisioned: a fully red-leafed tree with a face. The biggest one in the show. (Have not read the book btw) Other tree's in the haunted wood and the forests in general are all black. Most withered, of course, that could be a result of the Night King's magic.

IMO, I think this is backwards. I believe that the weirwoods are the creators and the children are the created. First calling them children begs the question, who is the parent? Second, this symbiotic relationship is quite like another of George story, guardians. In that story the mud pods (spelling) are the hive mind and there guardians are the gigantic sea creatures. The mud pods created there minions to tend and care for them as well as protect them. It’s kinda like the Changelings from deep space 9. The have created the smart administrative race (children) to tend to them as well as the warrior race(giants) to protect them. Both can be considered guardians.... if you want to take it a step further they might also be the hurangan(spelling) minds he references in other stories. The minds being the weirwood net on the planets they populate. And using their power, magical or telekinetic, they brought there guardians to life to protect them.

To make the planet their own, the Hrangans also land contingents of their slaveraces. Then they depart, not to return for a century. The mines become the first holdfasts, others are built later, carved deep into stone. Their cities gone, the miners revert to a more primitive level of technology, and soon establish a rigid survival-oriented culture. For endless generations they war against the slaveraces and against each other. At the same time, beneath the radioactive ruins of the cities, human mutations begin to arise…" - Dying Of The Light / George RR Martin

GRRM's Thousand Worlds stories are full of hive minded entities. It makes sense that the Weirwoods are some sort of GRRM hive mind, though all his hive minds are subtly different. E.g. Hrangans, Jaenshi vs the hive mind fungus in A Song For Lya. There's an interesting article on the similar themes in 'Seven Times Never Kill Man', the story with the Jaenshi in it, and the A Song Of Ice and Fire here cantuse.wordpress.com/2014/06/23/influences-on-asoiaf-and-seven-times-never-kill-man/#more-201 The Sandkings of the story were also hiveminded had a creepy as hell religious side to them. I.e. if you read the Thousand Worlds series of stories, there's loads of parallels to A Song Of Ice and Fire.

Martin clearly likes using HP Lovecraft, which I admit, i don't know much about. & i should look into his work more. But this actually reminds me of a few different & real-world analogs or possible sources: The children of the forest have striking resemblences to Native Americans. They seemed to live in peace in the natural world & have almost a magical command over the land around them. Which plants are medicinal, which are edible, how to grow & sustain crops, yet were also wiped out by the 1st men to settle their respective countries. & thru numerous (broken) treaties were relegated to a fraction of virtually useless, uninhabitable land even tho, it all used to belong to them. Although, the Children of the Forest, like our Native Americans, prob & rightfully, hold a grudge & seek revenge, but their numbers don't favor a successful outcome if attempted. The 3-eyed Raved, seems to be a cross between a Shaman/Buddhist/Nostradamus character. I can explain: Shaman used fasting & psychedelic mindset inducing drugs to get to an altered state of consciousness to receive visions from the Gods & of the past/present/future. Pretty sure the Nostradamus reference is obvious The Buddhists have a term/designation to describe the moment when a person suddenly realizes that all things are interconnected. They become a "stream-winner" (i think?, its bn a long time since i studied this). Its described as one/you, walking along, minding your own business when suddenly, u awaken 2 the realization tht everything & everyone around u is connected. Not just philosophically but u can see & feel it, as if weren't paying attn & wandered until waist deep in a stream. As move, yur aware & can fee, all at once: • the current of the water/air, • see/feel the soil kicked up by yur steps, • See/feel fish swimming by u via the current evn without touching them directly, you feel them swim by. The sand beneath yur toes is directly connected to the plants growing from it on the shore. How yur words, or moreso the intent/attitude behind yur words manifest around u. & u begin the 1st steps 2wrds enlightenment. Which, is a connection & awareness of all things past/present/future, and a connection btwn everything. Buddha himself, as well as his reincarnations & evn Buddhist monks are often described as having superhuman powers of knowledge of things to come, knowledge of past events that they could not hav known about, even something like teleportation & levitation abilities, super healing, etc.. Martin is a complex writer & one source prob isn't enough to make a character his own. He probably looks everywhere for inspiration to use.

I believe they are a part of the four elements of magic. The traditional Greek four elements are: earth, air, fire, and water. The planetos equivalent would be "fire, water/ice, earth and wind/air" If Dragons represent fire and the Others water, then Weirwoods would be the earth element.

@RainBird88x
@RainBird88x 5 жыл бұрын
Blood magic is a variant of fire magic. As is well known the words of House Targaryen are 'Fire and Blood', and in the books and TV show every successful use of blood magic involves a Targaryen or someone with Targaryen ancestry. (Rhaego, Gendry/Edric, Shireen) Ice is water in a solid form, so...

My META GRRM universe theory is Planetos is a planet like as if in Dune, colonized from waves of dispersing humans over several 100's thousands of years and each wave from 1st men to Andals to peoples thru Essos into Sothos/Uthros? (lost ships stranded devoluted over time Cromagnon-neanderthal-neolithic into the medieval cultures)basically are fighting the INDIGENOUS LIFEFORMS of the planet that have higher integrated connection than we do with our Terran nature so you get Children, WeirwoodTrees and Dragons and so called MaGic intertwined, bizarrely effecting and creating things inserted by Terran colonizers like Bears Wolves Birds then the possible interbreeding of humans with Children. Various astronomical happenings from regular comets to asteroids striking get you the black oily rocks and materials for valyrian steel, high disruptions to planetary magnetic fields or gravity to effect the forces of nature, ooh MAJIKS.

Also in real life Ash Trees are clonal like fungus where the hundreds of square miles of them are just ONE GENETIC being spread thru network of roots. I think like other authors GRRM uses real life science twisted for his fantasy stories.

If thee children and humans can indeed mate with each other, which isn’t a proven fact yet, then they have to be the same species. The children could be the first wave of humanity that was changed with genetic engineering. (Either done to themselves or perhaps by the force that animates the trees?) The Valyrians also seemed to have practiced some type of blood magic that did something similar to genetic engineering so perhaps something like that explains the children with magic and not science fiction. The one reason I think genetic engineering of some type must be involved is because the children have claws, and there is basically no way for that trait to evolve in apes. The fact that GRRM has the sistermen have the trait of webbed fingers almost indicates that he wants us to pay attention to the weird fingers.

It was two separate pact made between the North and the children and between the Starks and the white walkers. The North allowed the children to bring weirwood trees to the North and they worship the trees together. The Stark made a pact with the Walker to always manage Northern affairs not the South. That is how the Targeryans won westeros, they never wanted the North. Even though Torrend knelt the North is always been a separate kingdom. The wall protects the true North.
