I service a pair of Asolo Sport Heavy Duty Leather Hiking Boots that were made in Italy. They are all leather and I clean them with Fiebings Saddle Soap and then treat the leather with Pecard Leather treatment. I finish by adding new laces made from 550 paracord.

Wonderful video. My grandpa worked in custom Andean leather boots and shoes in Ecuador. People from all over the world would come buy his boots. They were similar to this and very good quality. I'm blessed to have recorded a few videos and took photos of him when he was alive and making them. This reminded me of him. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for this video. I have a pair of Thom McAns, also made in Italy, that look very similar. I bought them new when I was in Boy Scouts way back in 1975 and wore them all through high school and college. The Vibram soles on them have hardly any wear at all. I use them for my snow boots - yeah, believe it or not they still fit me even though I was only 13 when I bought them! Go figure.

Beautiful pair of older Asolo's..I'm waiting on a pair of the Alico New Guides to arrive. They look a lot like the Asolo sports in the video..It was nice to find a traditional old school well built full grain all leather upper, Norwegian welt and a serviceable sole. No more over priced throwaways. I just hope they are as nice as all of the reviews claim. Sold out fast last time around and have been waiting since fall for them to restock. Reasonably priced at 200.00...

Three boots to buy now, made in 2018, just as good as these are the Meindl Perfekt or Super Perfekt, Gronnell Stelvio, or the ultimate Paraboot Galibier Super Guides. All of these are made overseas, Meindl's in Germany, Gronell in Italy or Germany, and the Galibier's in France. Ebay has deals to on used boots, way cheaper than buying these brand new.

I just realized something when looking at these boots. They look incredibly similar to the pair of Alico Summit boots I just bought from Sierra Trading Post for $146 on sale. In fact because this model is no longer made, I wouldn't doubt if Asolo has some affiliation with Alico to make the new Summit model in very similar fashion to these. The new Alico Summits have the exact same one-piece leather upper, a one-piece soft leather liner, and cushioning around the top. The heel also has the same extra layer of leather over the rear seam. The Vibram out sole is also attached with double stitched Norwegian welt construction. For the money the Alico Summits are extremely high in quality and almost nothing else is in the same price range for what you get.

I've got a pair of the exact boots I bought in 1985 and I'm still using them to this day. (Got them resoled once) You are right about the long break-in period. But after that, these boots fit my feet like a glove. I don't have another pair of boots that feel this good on my feet. On the trail, the support and protection are second to none. I just wish they didn't weight 6.5 lbs/pair.

wow these oldies look so nice! all-leather shoes have such charm. I still have the Asolo boots I was issued at the swiss army and almost never used cuz' I spent most of the time in the kitchen and in bunkers under earth. Unluckily I cannot wear them anymore since my feet changed so much, so I bought new ones. For dry conditions I use all-leather alpine boots from Boreal (Spain) and for wet conditions gore-tex membrane alpine boots from Lowa (Germany). Otherwise I always used italian brands like Scarpa, Asolo, La Sportiva, Aku... mostly all-leather in the traditional tirolese style (Meindl, Hanwag (Bavaria), Zamberlan, Garmont (Italy) would be my other choices). I always wash my shoes after hiking and every 4-5 months I treat them with Niwax wax.

I bought a pair used for a 100 mile backpack trip. Not far into the trip they started killing my ankle from not flexing at the ankle. Ended up tying the tounge down to the front of the boot to finish the trip. There are other similarly constructed boots that dont constrict the ankle movement because they use a softer foam in the tongue.

you can still get boots like this for actually pretty reasonable cost if you look around. I got Meindl Perfekt boots from the german ebay in an auction for 100 euros, 35 euros shipping. the break in is no joke, they feel like ski boots at first. it will take many many hours to get them formed and compliant, but they will last a LONG time especially with proper care. These are for very serious hiking on very rough terrain, mind you, so there are better practical choices for anything other than very rough terrain where the weight and stiffness are justified. great find on those!

I have Asolo Alaska skiing boots. I bought them at the flea market, I think it was 1999. I've used them every winter since, on long week lasting and day skiing trips. Inner lining is a bit worn out at the rim but it is still ok inside the boots. Leather, stitching and sole are in good condition. I think boots have at least ten more years left. Unbelievable strong and well made boots.

Hi mate, thanks for the video. I have a pair of Scarpa SLs that I bought in London in 2001, just before they introduced the M3 model. It is of similar construction to your Asolo, heavy duty leather and soles stiff enough for crampons. They are rock solid! As for leather treatment, I have used Dubbin (an Australian brand) and recently, Montana Pitch Blend. Both excellent for the boots. Btw, I like to leave the boots in the sun prior to treatment to open the pores in the leather as it helps absorption. Cheers!

Beautiful boots ! Asolo's are too narrow for me. I live in the desert. 15% humidity is typical. It destroys leather boots stored over time. I started storing mine with wooden shoe blocks to prevent the toes from curling up and the boots from shrinking. Songmics makes inexpensive shoe blocks.

I have mountain light 2s as well as Meindl Perfekts. The Danners are great boots, but very different from these Asolos. The danners are basically just one layer of medium thickness leather, with a goretex liner. they also have flexible and padded midsole, and are very comfortable out of the box. The Meindls, which I think are more like these Asolos, have very thick, stiff and oily uppers, as well as thick padding sandwiched by soft leather liners. The midsole and outsole are also much firmer material and there isnt really any shock absorption built into the sole the way the danners have. The mountaineering boots also have double toungues with velcro to adjust the tongues straight for all legs/ankles; very very heavy, not great for hiking trails the way the danners are, but they are bulletproof and last forever

I had these shoes for a long time, very good because absolutely waterproof and very tight at the ankle as I prefer. The bad thing are their weight and a big hardness on the back of the feet. I have a pair of VASQUE hiking boots that look exactly like the ASOLO in your video. Your opening comment that the previous owner of the ASOLO stopped wearing them because they’re stiff and have a long break-in period is exactly what happened to me. I think I wore my VASQUE less than a dozen times before I put them in the back of my closet where they’ve been sitting undisturbed for the past 25+ years. During the past 25+ years, I’ve been wearing lightweight hiking boots. My favorite brand is LOWA (Zephyr and Renegade), but the LOWA’s have soft soles which wear out quickly. Since they can’t be re-soled, I’m forced to buy a new one which I find frustrating and wasteful. Hiking boots that can’t be resoled seems to be the norm. After watching your video, I decided to “rescue” my VASQUE from my closet. I cleaned and conditioned it; and took it on a short walk around my neighborhood. I immediately realized why I had stopped wearing them. It felt like I was wearing concrete boots and hot spots developed on my heels. All I could think about were my comfortable LOWA. I haven’t yet re-raised the “white flag of surrender” on my VASQUE. Instead, I’m going to try and tough it out and break them in. I’m using a sock liner with my hiking sock and applying a liberal amount of Body Glide on my heels to prevent blisters; but after a week, it still feels like I’m wearing concrete boots. I just wished I had a good friend who could break in my VASQUE for me!

Being from the area at the foot of the alps in Italy, the places where these and many other like these were born I can tell you they last forever if taken care of properly. I grew up in boots like these, none of the ones I owned ever broke or split, I either outgrew them or they are still with me in use. They might take a minute to break in but the reward is a boot that forms perfectly around the foot and one forgets to wear it even if heavier than many modern boots.

I bought my Asolo Sport Sella boots (almost identical to those in the film) - anyway, I bought them in 1983 .... I wear them fairly regularly in winter ...... I have NEVER broken them in. That 'stiff' leather you speak of, well it isn't because they haven't been worn much - they're just stiff.

@@MidAtlanticTV thanks Craig - I have worn them for 36 years, if it hasn't happened by now, it never will and I wear them quite a bit! (the inside padding around the heel cup has entirely dissolved to prove it). Then again, I sport proper all leather Oxfords and Brogues made in England and TTYTT, I get blisters on my big toes from them too .... I think my Loake Oxfords must be at least 6 years old by now ..... I suppose it's just my feet! (btw the boots are no strangers to saddle-soap)

I'm surprised people are still wearing these for hiking given the excessive weight compared to modern boots. I know mine weigh 2 pounds, 6 ounces EACH - almost FIVE POUNDS for the pair when compared with, for example the Merrell Moab (which I also wear) at 2 pounds, 8 oz for the PAIR. What kind of hiking are these best used for - mostly rocky trails? I know they're called "alpine" boots, so that's a given. Look forward to your response.

Hi. I purchased a pair of Brown Brasher Mens Country Master walking boots. Absoloutly love them. I was polishing them with transparent bitumen until a certain person told me to put leg oil on them. I can see it wrecked the waterproof layer on the boot and it really softened it up. I'm very dissapointed about it. Is there any way to fix the problem? What could you recommend me to do? Thanks a lot.

Actually heavy-duty hiking boots properly fit are the best solution for long distance hiking over rough terrain. They offer protection for your feet and ankles that cheap light weight shoes or boots can't match. Also see: www.areaguides.com/limmer-hiking-mountain-climbing-boots

Oh well I don't know how to spell it now but they would cave in over the toes and cause the famous toe chop one article years ago said to stuff news papers in them to dry out who can do this every time they get wet I took my last pair to a shoe cobbler and ask if he could fix m nope so they went into the garbage.

I sat with my boots in a bath of hot water, tied on to my feet, walked around for a couple hours. Cleaned them off and then used the oven-method while the leather was still wet. It was quite noticeable the difference in the leather's ability to absorb the dubbin.

Tictacpanter bad idea to put the leather near a heat source like that
@Tictacpanter
@Tictacpanter 7 жыл бұрын
Paul Thorburn: I would agree that drying boots like that would be a bad idea. However this was just to warm up the leather to help dubbin be absorbed. I used 100f deg with the door open and the boots kept on a pan at the lowest setting with the oven on bake. Rubber didn't even get soft. All drying was done with balled up newspapers inside the boot and kept in a warm ambient temperature away from direct heat.
